No Dane, Ratboy is the CWC wildcard.Posted 27 Oct 2012, by STABmag
You can never pick em. Santa Cruz local and aerial pioneer, Jason “Ratboy” Collins, 38, is the O’Neill Cold Water Classic wildcard. “I’m super excited to get the wildcard. I knew there were a few people up for it,” said Collins. “It’s pretty cool for a local to get the opportunity to go out and surf against talent like Slater and Parko.”
There were whispers of Dane Reynolds joining the Santa Cruz world tour event if O’Neill rider John John Florence wasn’t still in the world title race. But he is, currently sitting in fourth. As you know Dane finished John’s run in the Quik Pro in France. And, Dane can be a spoiler at any event in the world so that early invitation has been extinguished. So why would O’Neill look at having Dane in the event despite not having any association with O’Neill? He is obviously the world’s most popular surfer, alongside Kelly Slater and John Florence and brings eyeballs and attention. We would’ve loved to have seen him icing some SC walls just as you would’ve. The other wildcard will be awarded from a 12-man invitational contest on October 31.
The main event comes to life here November 1.
