Ozzie Wright, sweet chilli jam, Whaley wedge
Although renowned mostly for his punt game, Ozzie’s career and critical acclaim has been more the result of his ability to seamlessly blend aerials, turns and tubes. His section in the seminal early naughties film, Seven Days Seven Slaves (see below) broke new ground in terms of the functionality of aerials in a surfers repertoire; the flow on of which can be seen in every of the big name new gen kids. Says Vaughan Blakey, one of the men behind the film: ”It was the first time cutties and airs and floaters had all been meshed so seamlessly. Before that you were either an air guy, or a power guy. (Ozzie’s) section brought air surfing into a different realm in terms of being a functional part of a surfer’s repertoire,” remembers Vaughan, who helped edit and direct the film. Here’s Ozzie jamming a wedge with that lesser celebrated feature of his rip-tear.
