Otis Carey, Wollongong, NSW

Wollongong is a lil’ city that sits a coupla hours south of Sydney. It’s smaller than Sydney but the coal ports chug away industriously and there’s excellent waves if y’know where to look, much like the one pictured here. While it’s on the radar of most south coast surfers, it ain’t exactly well-known, so there’ll be no divulging of specifics from your pals at Stab except to say that between two breakwalls, sits an energy conversion unit (a sexy way of generating electricity) and, underneath it, about 50 meters towards the beach, peels a fickle but rampy left, which you’ve gotta get past gates and walk down a track to get to. Which is exactly what Sydneysider Otis Carey did on the weekend. And once Otis gets on a wave with any kinda ramp, especially when there’s a breeze gushing up the face, he makes music like this backside roter.
