Nike/Hurley ice US Open
Posted 25 Sep 2012, by STABmagNike and Hurley are no longer sponsors of the world’s biggest surfing event, the US Open of Surfing. The event falls in the peak of the Californian summer and offers the world’s best surfers (30 of the top 32 showed this year), a shot at $100k for first place. Evan Slater said of leaving the sponsorship Hurley had committed to since 2009: “We’ve decided to export what we created at the U.S. Open and invest it into other aspects of our business, like a renewed athlete focus and new and exciting ways of connecting with millions of kids.”
The Australian Open of Surfing slated for 2013 at Manly will still go ahead in February.
good, Nike should get the fuck out of surfing altogether
The Surf Industry is like a dog that instead of chasing its tail, it actually eats it and part of its leg too. The big companies are mismanaged, have poor business models, and cry too poor to sponsor comps. Enter Volcom, who comes in, fills not only a surf shop niche, but puts on the comp of the Year. One segment of the Industry wants too keep Nike out, yet the Industry needs companies like that to survive now on a pro level at least. IMG knows what they are doing, and may just be setting up another company to fill in, since the U.S. Open will draw huge even if it was sponsored by Tampax. Personally I like the small companies, and loyal brands, but they cannot afford to be sponsors. The Industry created this dilemma when Quick and Billy went into the Malls, and their clothing became kook wear. Now Nike, Target, etc. are sponsoring the events that they can’t, and then moving on because they got the youth pub they needed. Sustainability applies to the Surf Industry too, but its hard when a bunch of high school graduates, and ex semi pro reps are guiding the show. Just don’t drop Tahiti or Bells.
what IT guy said was extremely relevant. just look at the Hurley Pro website/webcast and how poor it was. With all events under one site run by the ASP it would also cut costs for those companies that are crying poor. dont be angry just because you couldnt understand what he said.
I got my first blow job at the US Open ! They can’t cancel it !
It cannot be understated the need for a single streaming entity for the Tour. This is a farce, and a portrait of ineptitude on the part of the ASP. There is no reason that the Tour…with a president getting excess of $200k a year..cannot afford decent IT and web production under a single entity. Corner cutting, inefficient, and difficult for the very fans the companies are trying to entice. Utterly lame and shameful.

Why does Nike have any less right to sell to surfers than the existing surf corporates?
I would rather spend my money with Nike than some company pretending to be about the surfing when in reality they are run by morons who just want to be part of the scene. Surfs up dudebroman.
Red Bull would have to be the only other company that has the cash… either them or Apple. one thing i’ll say, is that no matter how much history that spot has, it’s almost always boring to watch the mushy reforms… cancel it for a year or two for all i care
Mobile video contests are the future….get bud light and Safeway to sponsor charge money to watch the show….easy….
um…wasn’t innersection kind of like that? didn’t really take off.
most the top guys said it was lame and didn’t enter.
or Target… to be sure they’re seeing their return on the young San Clemente golden boy ten fold… yeah, the Target U.S. open, brought to you in association with Red Bull and the I phone… woop woop… or just move the comp to China, that’s where our loyalties lie.

Hurley -worst webcast, worst commentary booth for years. Don’t get me wrong, I liked it when Bob was with Billabong… but Hurley is a third tier weakling. Looks like a high school student put together their website… disorganized, and little time spent on providing footage in a reasonable format.

Hooray, big word usage! go back to your IT cave. No one gives a shit what some rat who writes code for a living thinks about the surf industry. Go turn in your resume to the ASP and shut the fuck up! The surf industry is dead anyway, just go surf.

Actually, a ton of people care about what he is saying, and since you are taking the time to look at websites and post comments, you probably do too. Millions of people watch the Tour webcasts, and they are poor and different from event to event. This is what the guy above is saying too, half the people want surfing to go back to the stone age, but the Industry has already ruined that idea. Its so crowded and overhyped most swells its sickening, but its not changing unfortunately. The Industry is not ‘dead’, and it will continue to ruin surfing through its own ineptitude and marketing follies. Half the ‘IT’ guys surf now, and use all the Surfline hype apps to be on it when the next ‘Swell of the Summer’ hits for $29.95. I’ll bet money you watch the comps though, so its you who should shut it. Stick to crayons and construction paper.

Give me a pair of those “Rad” bright coloured board shorts that Hurley make! So “cool’!
Looks like Nike is about to sell off Hurley. They used them to get their foot in the door with surfing and now they need all the cash in the surf budget to pay for Jules and the rest of the teams salaries. Wonder how long Hurley will last without Nike dollars?
The whole thing is classic. It started with a bunch of surfers saying “How can we make money off this? Lets start clothing companies!” The Surf Industry wants sooo badly to be big dog, but can’t come close to living up to its own expectations. Volcom owned by Gucci, Hurley by Nike, etc. None of the companies can compete on their own, and its their own fault. Pro Surfing is such a small part of surfing, and most of us would go surf no matter what, but if the ‘OC’ and all its “industry’ were to fall in the ocean and disappear, we would all be better off. Stop ruining surfing by trying to mass market it to everyone that doesn’t surf, and at least get it right on the part you DO have, which is a contest schedule that people love to watch, and is ridiculously good surfing. Do you have to fuck everything up in the long run? Wake up OC
goon festival = us open…. 5,000 items marketed…. one big cluster-f@ck.
what happened to art, soul, and higher standards than … tramp stamp tatoos that are sprayed above teenage girls a$$es… ?
look at what these companies put forward at the us open.. who has the latest energy drink, the latest reflective lenses.. etc.. bunch of crap. all of it. flush it all away.
xxxx
Not sure about that Maynard … I like tramp stamp tattoos ….
and I actually also really, really like teenage girls asses ….. !
Actually most girls asses ….. OK, I kind of really like all girls asses.
Does that make me a bad person …. ? Yell no.
So, I say …. don’t flush it. They must keep it.
Who’s with me ….. ?
xxxx
Take it or leave it for me, strange because thats exactly how Nike feels about it apparently. Its great so long as the Circus stays in the OC and HB where it belongs.
