Great White Attacks Kayak Outside Steamer Lane
The city issues a four-day water ban.
There has been a lack of headlines crashing around surf media scaring anyone who dares to click. If you’ve been thinking it’s been a long time since we’ve written a shark article. You’re right. The waters have been quiet. The fear has subdued; you should (or shouldn’t) have seen Lowers on Sunday! From Southern California to Byron, there has not been a single disturbance worth reporting since Shark Bite Sophia… There were probably a few attacks in Florida, but those spinners slither in the shallows nipping hands, finger and ankles. They’re the cocker spaniel bites of shark attacks–that doesn’t make headlines; not like a dingo and a baby.
Today, at 11 am in Santa Cruz, a kayaker was attacked a quarter-mile outside Steamer Lane reports KSBW. He came out unscathed, just a 12-inch wide bite mark to show for it – a narrow escape. All water activities have since been banned from the San Lorenzo River Mouth and Fair Avenue (a one-mile radius) for four days. The water ban is part of the county’s official “Shark Incident Action Plan”.
Tomorrow, a solid swell from Hurricane Eugene is forecasted to hit Santa Cruz. On the day the water ban is called off, it will dissipate. However, right now, there are still surfers in the water at Steamer Lane who, as Mr Collins said, should be more worried about tweakers.
