British Surfer Left To Die In Moroccan Ravine, Inquest Hears
Passersby reportedly afraid to help dying British surfer due to financial liability.
Tragic news out of the point-surfing favourite, Morocco, where 20-year-old British surfer, Luke Sewell, was reportedly left to die after falling down a 20-foot ravine.
A coroner’s report into the death from the UK found it was “likely” Luke had been seen by people on their way to the local mosque as early as 4am but no one stopped “because they feared having to pay his medical bills.”
Sewell was found three hours later with “severe head injuries” and died on April 2 with his parents at his bedside.
Sewell had been out drinking with friends and returned to the hotel at 1.30am. He is then thought to have gone back out alone to find his phone. No one is sure how he ended up down the ravine, though was no fence around it or sign warning of it.
His death was found to be non-suspicious by Moroccan authorities. They refused, however, to reveal their findings to the public or coroners in the UK.
Tracie Stringer, Luke’s mother, told the inquest: “We were told everybody walked past Luke for a long period of time and nobody would go near him as they would be liable if he was taken to hospital. That’s terrible.”
The British Coroner said, “There is no evidence as to how this happened,” adding: “I’m sure the family is extremely frustrated that these blanks in knowledge have not been filled.”
