New York – Surf Town

Posted 04 Jul 2012, by STABmag

Is surfing in New York more style than sport? Is ‘urban surfer’ an oxymoron? These are the questions some people face. Not really us, but more those who live in New York and like to ride waves. A new magazine, aptly-named WAX, is at the centre this very discussion in a NY Times piece. If you’re kicking around at home with nought to do, or watching the clock do its rounds from your work desk, then go run your eyes over some considered words.

NY waves suck. No good banks, no good swell. Maybe in Winter however.

But there is definitely a hipster 60′s surfer vibe kicking in the city. Spew……

Those people you all mention aren’t from New York. They come from other states such as California and the like and just think they can surf because they are from the west coast or have shitty tattoos. I was born raised and surf in NYC and trust me going to Rockaway used to be tough. You would get followed by groups of people threatening you to get out of their hood. These transplant trendy surfers in no way represent the New York surf scene but represent the sad turn that the industry has forced upon its most devout fans.
