Nathan Fletcher takes XXL awards, like he was always going to.
Posted 06 May 2012, by STABmagLast night in Anaheim, all the brave dogs got together for Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards. Nathan Fletcher was the star of the show after a mind-blowing year in 2012. From big Fiji and Teahupoo to paddle sessions in Hawaiian outer reefs, Nate ruled the big wave scene. But last night it was all about the heaviest wave every ridden: his tow bomb from Teahupoo during the greatest WT layday of all time on August 27 in Tahiti. He took out ride of the year, the Monster tube award and the men’s performance champion. With his ol pal Bruce Irons by his side, Nate was excited about how he was feeling. “I feel like $50,000,” he said. “It feels awesome… I’m going to try to multiply it with good times.”
In other divisions, Dave Wassel won the paddle award for his mutant at Jaws, Garrett McNamara copped the biggest wave award for his left at Portugal along with wipeout of the year (at Jaws) while Maya Gabeira took out the laydeez big wave award.
