Nat Young wins trials, beats Kelly Slater in heat, Santa Cruz
Yeah, you read all that right. Nat Young, everyone’s favourite Santa Cruz goofyfooter, not only won the trials of the O’Neill Cold Water Classic at Steamer Lane, but then beat Kelly Slater and Kolohe Andino in round one of the main event today. Sure, round one doesn’t mean a whole lot (since there’s a repercharge round), but Nat gets a free ticket into round three and will now be brimming with even more confidence (if that were possible) at his home break. Watch out for this kid, he’s won here before.
Photographer profile
Ryan Miller
Ryan Miller, 33 years old, does not know how to write a bad email. Your pals at Stab have learnt to live vicariously through Miller’s red wine-fuelled letters from the road. His travels take him to some dreamy locales and, in those places, he scores all-time photos: “My favourite photo I’ve shot was of Benny Bourgeois in the Caribbean, with a fisheye. Often I just take photos, but rarely do I get to make one.” In an age of tail-highs and released fins, Ryan still most likes to shoot someone who can lay-down a big backside turn. Namely: Jordy Smith, Dane Reynolds, Gabe Kling, Kekoa Bacalso, Damien Hobgood and Peter Mendia. Like most photogs, Miller misses Scott Aichner’s work. But, as far as contemporary inspiration? “Trying to see things through my daughter’s eyes. It’s wild to think about someone experiencing something totally new on almost a daily basis when, as adults, we rarely get to experience something truly new.”

Trevor...stupid Trevor........I believe Matt is referring to the responsibility he feels to produce good results and exposure through his profession(surfing), for the money he receives for those services - common if you are hard working person of the community(which you may not be). I don't believe I heard Matt complain about this but rather just make a statement.Great clip to provide insight into what makes Matt tick.
