"It’s always been my dream to surf a Heat at Winki Pop," said Mick.

"it was rough losing knowing I needed a 7 because I felt like there were so many opportunities to get one," said Taj.

Jules wasn't too thrilled with the beach commentators after his semifinal. He killed at this event.

Jordy's round five exit is well unbefitting of the surfing he did at this event.

“I had the waves to win the Heat and John John capitalised on my mistakes,” said Kelly of their matchup.

“I did my best, that’s all I can say," said Adriano. "This year will be a learning curve for me."

"I think after I blew it on that one wave it hit my confidence," said Kelly. "I’ll be hard on myself on that one for the next few hours I think."

Eight Claims from Day Eight of the Rip Curl Pro, Bells Beach

All photos ASP/Cestari

Mick Fanning just won his third Rip Curl Pro, Bells Beach. He took down Owen Wright in the quarters, then once the event moved to Winki Pop, he beat Julian Wilson in the semis and Taj Burrow in the final. “After that 13th in Margaret River I went home and worked really hard and I’m so pleased that the hard work paid off,” said Mick. Congratulations to Taj, I’ve never been so nervous for nine minutes of my life, he surfed amazingly. We got to surf everywhere at this event which was awesome, we got to surf the Bowl, Rincon and to finish at Winkipop. It’s always been my dream to surf a Heat at Winkipop. This is such a special event for me and I feel comfortable here. With the calibre of surfers on Tour at the moment there’s never an easy Heat and it keeps it so exciting.”

And now, here’s eight observations from a-Saffa-we-love and fired commentator, Dooma Fahrenfort…

1. The judges need a check up from the neck up, f’real. Jordy spanked Jules and Freddy P spanked Owen. Kelly said that Jordy’s wave was one of the best waves he’s ever seen ridden. (Also see Jordy’s post-heat interview after he lost, where he talks about getting judged against his own ability, not the person he’s surfing against.)

2. The paddle battle is the lamest thing in surfing. Hype it up as much as you want, it still sucks.

While no such need for hustle befell Freddy P today, he ain’t one to back down when challenged from, like, anything. (ASP/Cestari/Getty Images)

3. If Gabs wins a title, his shitty priority tricks will be forgotten. No one cares about Kelly snaking Shane Beschen anymore except Shane Beschen.

4. Carissa, Tyler and Steph surf better than the men’s World Tour bottom 10 out at Bells.

Carissa, who won the women’s event, was a straight-up powerhouse. (ASP/Cestari)

5. The judges don’t judge style at Bells, unless they’ve have taken “flow” out of the criteria. Too many double pump bottom turns. Watch old footage of Occy and Curren and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Jordy is not a man who struggles with flow at a place like Bells or, really, anywhere. (ASP/Cestari/Getty Images)

6. Adriano will place fifth or better at Bells for the next three years. He might not have much flow but his turns are huge.

Overzealous? Fuck no. Just right. (ASP/Cestari/Getty Images)

7. The judges pick and choose how they want to use priority. At Snapper, priority was given to whoever rode the last wave, regardless of who was further out. At Bells, it was given to whoever was further out. Otherwise, we would’ve had a Mick and Julian final.
Julian was in some kinda zone today.

8. The squat snap off the lip is the new layback. Which are really ugly unless you’re doing ‘em like Mick.

This is quite a throw above a squat snap (see fins), but they sure did feature heavily in this event. (ASP/Cestari)

  • seriously

Micks surfing is so boring, same shit every wave. Fuck the judging this year, it’s been a giant leap backward.

    • mullrider

its so heavy i can barely watch him surf, sad for someone who used to be my favorite until he turned into a robot, how cooked did julian get, if mick got a wave like that with the claim of course no doubt he would have got the score.

      • Encunted

Kinda amazing that ten years after he tore his hamstring of the bone, he’s still surfing at this level with a metal hook attached to his ass

    • dave deepcreek

Why doesn’t he just throw a punt or two at the end of the waves?i have seen him do them,he is so talented they would be easy for him.(any grom at your local can do em, shit I can and I’m 40!)..just needs to go for it a bit

      • jimbob

you can punt hey? you should sign up for the QS since your shredding so hard..

        • dd

Was a pretty good subtle claim and you called him for it.

          • NEGATRON

You haven’t joined our STAB fantasy surfer club yet DD… In this club you will not be on the bottom of the table like in the other club we share… actually I think Marko is coming last, Im having a BBQ at his this arvo. I shall remind him of his lowly status.

        • zbah

Classic. What are the chances deep Dave could throw punts around like Easter candy at the end of those waves at winki? I’m giving it a big zero

          • dave deepcreek

You all missed the point, wich is punts for Mick Fanning are piss easy…

    • Megadude

Dunno if I’d call the mostly technically perfect surfing boring but I guess people said the same about Rog Federer when he was on fire.. Horses for courses really.

      • mikeislame

        Spot on.

      • Waldo

That’s the problem with ASP surfing this year. We don’t want to watch “technically perfect”.

        • zbah

Be careful what you wish for. Should sloppy technique get higher style points for looking harder? Or maybe the alternative is to judge one wave instead of two. But then why not just judge best move or best turn? The downside is that it becomes basically an air show or at best a wave catching contest. So imagine a heat where Toledo does a backflip and jordy does a massive turn. Who wins? Or parko catches a six footer at the beginning of the heat. Does anyone bother catching a three footer? It’s like bagging on the u.s. Constitution. It ain’t perfect but it’s the best history has produced

          • bitter guy

its pretty simple, surfing is still points per maneuver (shhhh). big, fast, risky surfing should be rewarded but it should be damn hard to get 7 points or more from any single maneuver (see Dane at Haleiwa) and it should be damn hard to get over 7 points without putting it on the line (see Mick)

          • Stamos

Try and get through one of Mick’s turns and still make a wave at Winki. You think a surfer with less control and less ability should be rewarded for surfing closer to their limit rather than a better surfer who still performs to a higher level regardless of their limit? You’re kidding yourself. It’s not a handicap competition.

          • Surf Hunk

I picture you to be like the pommies (English) who end up in Australia each and every year and spend a year learning how to surf. They learn the rules and then get super pissed and frustrated when they keep getting faded whenever they surf. Surfers in the real world don’t really give a shit about technicalities or “sloppy technique”. That shit doesn’t belong anywhere near surfing.

          • Encunted

John Dove: you have a rival.

Kelly gushes over technique. Lump him in with the Poms as well?

And it’s usually those clowns, fresh out of surf school (which should all be Jihaded, at least on the Gold Coast), with no idea of etiquette, much less technique, doing the fading.

          • Surf Hunk

I live in a touristy town and I burn poms every day guilt-free. The surf school graduates are only ever burning each other.
Focusing on things like technique and the rules etc is pretty much the opposite of what is meant to be attractive about surfing. At least to a broader audience in a commercial sense if that’s the argument? Kelly is an anomaly so it’s hard to talk about him in any argument.
My personal opinion is that when someone is taking surfing too seriously and surfing “technically perfect” it gets boring. Doesn’t look like they’re having fun. I’m going to make an assumption that 99.9999% of surfers do it just for fun. Mick Fanning won but made me yawn most of the time. Simply doesn’t look like the fun I see (and have) everyday in the real world.

          • Encunted

I see what you are saying (and it was a cheap shot on my part – sorry ’bout that), but paying attention to technique, if only the rudimentary aspects, is an essential part of progression in most things in life, surfing included. Surf coaches would be out of a job if it were otherwise.

          • Keanu808

But they aren’t doing it for fun. They are competing for a title and cash. Btw you sound like a turd.

          • John Dove

when you pop up you can have a certain attitude about what you’re doing on that wave and that affects the outcomes (a nice attitude is having fun and appreciation)… for the veteran professionals those attitudes get pushed by the judging system to something different… i’d say mick’s attitude is very focused! on heat strategy, not falling, and maneuver quantity… that’s what ASP makes them do for the title and cash

          • John Dove

I appreciate perfect technique… but mick just has the same good move over and over and over. it’s like I’ve heard a song 100 times I could replay it in my head i don’t need to keep listening/seriously rewarding 8s and 9s for a relatively uncritical approach

          • wally

Fanning has won at Teahupoo. He got thru to the final at Cloudbreak last year. You know what, I don’t think he threw one forehand hack

          • matt obrien

BUT CJ actually beat Fanning at Cloudbreak last year even though judges “saw” it differently. Watch the heat recap (if you can find it) and you will clearly see the truth. Mick gets bonus points from judges a lot. Parko Push has a catchy ring to it – the Mick Push doesn’t. Variety is IN the criteria – Fanning’s surfing lacks that bit. It should matter.

          • Guest

            Fuck up whiner

      • Jeff M

“Well first of all, I’d like to say, and the ASP gonna fine me, I don’t want to be a part of this fuckin dumb-ass wanna be tennis tour..”

Dont’ compare tennis and surfing, ever.

        • mullrider

          that was beautiful

    • James B

Seriously??? Now you talk about judging? Yeah, right….

You should have been here when Joel Parkinson won his world title. Or when Julian “spoiled brat” Wlson won in Portugal. Or in almost half of Joel Parkinson´s heats in 2014…

Is pretty sad, but is also nice to see australians and americans disturbed about surfing judgment when their boys are the ones losing heats in an unfair way.

      • Paul

Are you retarded? All the final four were Australians so I’m pretty sure he’s not complaining about Aussies in general losing in an unfair way. It’s about the fact that when mick stands up everyone knows exactly what he will do and there is zero risk. And half of the comments are about jordy getting robbed and they’re probably being made Aussies

        • James B

Just because Jordy x Julian heat was on of those cases where even a blind can see Richie Porta´s acting.

          • Paul

And I realise jjf is not Aussie. But point is still there

          • James A

            An Aussie won.. Suck shit…

          • Pete B.

            retarded

      • James A

        Mick won… Suck shit…

      • jacopopeterman

shut the fuck up James B. You’re such a kook

      • Encunted

The judging gets talked about during, and after, every event. It has always been thus and shall remain forever more.

        • James B

But there´s a lot of easy changes that could be made to prevent overscoring and judging errors. How healthy can be having a biased head judge ruling judging decisions? Should judges be able to hear the beach commentators calls?? And the list goes on.

          • Encunted

Porta should go, no doubt. If it were any other organisation and so many blatant fuck ups occurred on his watch, he would have been shown the door a long time ago.

          • Pete B.

            retardedly

      • Pete B.

        retard

      • Redneck

whats with the hate for Julian? why is he a spoiled brat?

        • James B

Read the comments about his behavior after losing in the semifinal

      • zbah

If surfing like parko or mick is easy why don’t the others just copy that easy stuff and win world titles? Parko and mick are not over scored. They do surf carefully and hold back in order to win heats because it is a two wave system and that is what wins heats but they are still the form talents of the ct

        • Ben

Yeah they are perfect surfers. They hold back because the judging makes them. If the judging criteria changed they might not hold back in order to produce the score.. which is exactly what needs to happen if the ASP is going to grow. They need to make competition surfing exciting again.

        • frother

exactly. Kind of a don’t hate the player hate the game scenario.

        • James B

You´re always unfair. I don´t said Mick Fanning is overscored. What i AFFIRM is that Joel Parkinson AND Julian Wilson are way too often overscored. Period. Understood?? If not, please ask Jordy Smith.

      • james b chugs dick

how are you so stupid, stupid fucking brazo

    • Ben

I see everyone hating on the judging each and every event but no one is presenting a solution for this repetitive problem. Obviously this year will continue the same as it has. But surfing has completely changed and so should the way a wave is judged. May if some decent ideas on how to improve the system were put forth the cunts running the ASP would open their fucking eyes and get to work making the judging better.

The judging should change from a wave score out of 10, to a wave score out of 50.

      1.Commitment and Degree of Difficulty

      2.Innovative and Progressive Manoeuvres

      3.Combination of Major Manoeuvres

      4.Variety of Manoeuvres

      5.Speed, Power and Flow

Each section should be scored out of 10 for a total wave score of 50. Total heat score out of 100.

      * It is important to note that the emphasis on certain elements is contingent upon the location and the conditions on the day, as well as changes of conditions during the day.

These emphasis on certain elements should be assessed and communicated to the surfers as conditions change so surfers know what their focus should be on. Surfers are confused. The judges are completely confused and are rewarding BORING SURFING! YES IT’S GREAT SURFING, BUT IT’S BORING! This will not only alienate hard core surf fans it will NOT bring in NEW FANS. Which is exactly the goal of this whole new ASP.

Just some ideas instead of the complaining I see after every event.

      • Marcus B

I also think splinting the judgment in parts would be good. It would even help judges to compare wave by wave in each criteria separately, I think this way it would be more technical and less emotional. I am just not sure if they already do it or not, and if the mistakes are lake of capacity or are done on purpose to suit interests. It would be nice to know more about the judges job, like, why not to fix a camera into the judges cabinet so we can watch it?

      • Rattone

that’s not a terrible idea actually, wave score out of 50? that way it would be next to impossible to get a perfect score. I like it.

        • Ben

Exactly.. that way a wave can be broken down and give specific scores for the criteria. This would help explain the judges reasoning for the score and also show surfers what is expected of them.

Perfect scores would be attainable, it would just push surfers to be more creative and promote exciting surfing.

A more refined judging criteria needs to be implemented. Because I know we all agree the current judging system is a big steamy pile of BULL SHIT.

      • Jeff M

Here’s a simple solution: KEEP THE SCALE DOWN!!!

The judges need to chill their boners. Over and over they make this mistake. Have some discipline. If all that matters is getting the end result correct, then why so much emphasis on high heat totals? Too much “Well if surfer x’s was a 9, then surfer y’s was a 12″.

A perfect example is throwing an 8.83 at Mick near the beginning of the final. He surfed well, but an 8.83?? So the judges basically said it was only possible to surf a wave 1.17 better? Riggghhht. Taj’s 9.63 was worth at least 3 more points than Mick’s 8.83, at least. Watch the replays of both and tell me I’m wrong. KEEP THE SCALE DOWN!!!!

        • Encunted

Could not agree more. There’s not enough rigour in the judging to warrant to continued use of a 1-100 scale for each ride.

          • Ben

I disagree. With a scale of 0-50 for each wave, total 2 waves 100, they would be able to judge waves with rigour and then show where the total wave score came from the 5 pieces of criteria (see above comment). Each section of the criteria being worth 0-10. This way everyone knows where the scores are coming from.

Granted this is a rough idea and obviously they are some holes in it. I think it would make the judges more critical of each wave ridden and also allows the surfers to see the full scope of how they are being scored and where they need to improve.

Instead of the current model which is dated and rewards boring uninteresting surfing.

          • Encunted

Fair enough, but if the judges are still going to be scoring each criterion 1-100 (that’s what the current scale is: 100 possible scores between 0 and 10), I just can’t see how they are going to get a 1-500 scale right when they consistently get 1-100 wrong. Might as well pull a number out of a hat at this point.

Not a criticism, just food for thought. Blindboy’s done a statistical analysis of it over at Swellnet if you’re interested.

Good job on getting the ball rolling.

        • bitter guy

100% correct, for each surfer’s first wave, they need to keep it in their pants. all scores should then be based off the first score given. every wave thereafter needs to be proportionally better to get a higher score. a lot more heats would be won with 14 points but they would get the result right a lot more often

        • John Dove

yup the scale is completely blown. a wave surfed all the way in with variety and good maneuvers should be a 5 (not a 7.5). because there needs to be a larger point distinction between good and great and great and greatest.

and also the whole format of top 2 waves could come into question. I think if someone’s overall performance is better in a heat, that’s the ultimate point and they should win. like jordy v. parko 2012 lowers

        • mullrider

get rid of the head judge put the judges in a sound proof box and let them judge, if not why dosnt richie porta sit there with a pad and a pen and score it all himself which is what he does anyway, have you ever heard a head judge at a wqs they stand there and say a little slow or no critical first move and they say between 5 and 6.5, this is a dumb idea but what if all the surfers just voted or judged who they thought won the heat no doubt every heat would be rightfully WON

      • Encunted

Just curious. Would you keep a 1-100 scale (0.00 – 10.0) for each each criterion?

        • mullrider

haha i feel you no difference like old mate said keep the scale down judging out of 50 is the same as judging out of 5 same with 100 and 10

    • zbah

Mick was getting full round bottom turn to crisp vertical through/above the foam ball fin snaps at winki and that won the final for him. The others need to work on their boards/technique and start matching micks small wave bottom turn ability or they deserve to keep losing. He won through having the superior lower body strength to make this look sharp

      • Ben

Yes he surfs great.. but its boring.. I want to be entertained.. this comp was the best one so far for the most part.. but is was still boring. Judging criteria needs to change next year, it needs a complete overhaul.

    • Waldo

Since Mick won last year they changed the criteria to suit him this year. Now all the other surfers who want to make heats emulate that robot formula. Some have been able to get by without it; john, medina, jules. even jordy. But imagine if john john would win a tittle it would change everything, surfing comps would be fresh and innovative again. As for this year we are in for a boring ride.

    • Keanu808

Look on the bright side. At least a brazzo didn’t win!

      • Duck

Medina won the australian triple crown. Lololololol! Take that, fucker.

        • Keanu808

‘Take that, fucker’. How about go back to your third world home and surf your crappy beach breaks there.

  • song?

asp judging is such a joke

    • Surf_Liker

Everyone complaining about judging is getting so old. In this entire event there were maybe 4 heats with questionable results, Adriano over Felipe, Julian over Jordy, and Owen over Freddy P, and Kelly over Kalohe, and then Kerr over Wilcox was flat out wrong. But the 4 questionable heats were so close that in a subjective sport, some people will have different opinions. It is great that the fans are demanding accountability for the judges but the fact that it is everyone’s first reaction after an event where the judging was not too bad is such a bummer. This event was entertaining as hell with all the top surfers making it into the final series and everyone just complains.

      • bitter guy

Kelly over Kolohe wasn’t close, go look at Kelly’s last wave against Kolohe’s waves, there is no explanation when the judges have the benefit of slo-mo and replay, ready to call it rigged actually. look at JJFs first wave against Taj’s first wave, two full points off, how do you come back from that against guys at this level?

      • cuttiesandfloaters

It would be easy to let the bad judging slide if it was simply down to the subjectivity of surfing but it’s clearly not. The judges have an agenda and push through their favourites. Plus, even the subjectivity issue is deeper than you elude to. The judging is generally rewarding conservative surfing (exception JJF air) and in so doing subduing the younger generation’s surfing, and therefore stifling progression of the sport in general. Plus if we don’t vent on the judging and commentary then really what is there to talk about. “Those stairs down to Bells are brown” or “Rosy’s choice of scarf today is preventing me from seeing her ample mams” or “Was Belly an attempt at cloning Slater using claymation that went horribly wrong”.

  • skippy

Jordy should have beat julian and julian should have beat mick. WTF

    • Bulleit

What else could Jordy have possibly done to get a 10 on that last wave? We already know that barrels count for shit at Bells.

      • skippy

The flow between the first 3 turns was the best of the whole event

        • Rattone

shit the combo of the first 2 turns was possibly one of the best of all time, powerful torqued out gaff straight into a bottom turn/blowtail!! fucking robbed’

          • sandy ravage

Spot on. Massive opening turn to blow tail in a seamless motion…..unreal.

    • Stamos

Julian wasn’t close to Mick. Watch it again.

      • skippy

Once you can do 3 turn combos to big air revos then tell me he wasnt close to mick. Cause thats what his last wave was way better then micks bog 9.5

      • bitter guy

“that turn” cause there’s really only one, well, two if you include “the wrap” isn’t worth 3 points per, not when Joel does it either. Taj got overscored badly on his first wave against JJF. they have slo-mo, if you do a top turn that wouldn’t make a photo in a mag, it can’t be worth more than 3 points

  • Timmy Turner

    1. I love Taj, bad luck.
    2. Mick’s surfed the same he always has and won.
    3. Julian shreds but his attitude is fucking infuriating and he comes off as a spoilt brat. If he was a Yank he’d be one of the most hated surfers on tour.
    4. Jordy was the best surfer of the competition
    5. JJF should’ve been in that final

    • ASP Judge

      8. Freddy P got ripped. best backhand by a country mile. owen looked like a slow crab compared to him.

      • Charlie Conway

While Freddy is at the top of his game and its great, lets not forget about CJ. Fucking radical backhand.

        • Jeff M

CJ got robbed and no one said shit. Maybe too many people have Owen on their fantasy team? He’s a steal at 3-5 mil. Pick him up if possible

  • John Dove

Julian had 3 better hits than any of Mick’s (and did 2 airs). What happened in Julian v. Mick is a lot what’s wrong with scoring…

    Judges
    – don’t distinguish quality of maneuver in the highest end (of the point scale, enough)
    – reward riding the biggest wave even when maneuvers are of a lesser quality
    – don’t reward creativity (almost punish)
-severely punish for not finishing waves
    – overly reward average/good hits done in combination (relative to excellent)

End result aggressive competitors can specialize in surfing relatively conservatively. Specialize in the constraints of 2 best waves in 30 minutes… you’re going to beat people even when their OVERALL performance was better

  • david

Jordy’s 9-whatever was a 10 all day long. Best-ridden wave in a comp in quite a while. Julian acted like a child when he lost to Mick when he should have been thanking his lucky stars he got past Jordy to surf against Mick in the first place.
Something’s a bit off with Kelly’s vibe this year. He’s looking fallible and even a tad old and wobbly in ordinary surf, and his boards aren’t matching his typical looseness. Undoubtedly still supreme in barreling reef waves, though.

    • Rattone

I think your right about Kelly, he was starting to show age last year at any of the events in average conditions. You would be crazy not to bet on him when we get to Chopes, Fiji and J-Bay cause that’s where his superior wave knowledge truly comes into play. I guess nobody is really invincible to age and its nuts how good he still is for being over forty!!

      • Encunted

Perhaps we’re also still seeing the fallout from the Quitsilver affair? It must’ve been emotionally, and physically, taxing on him with the media hysteria and what not.

        • Keanu808

I’m sure all the millions they paid him made it easier…

          • Encunted

No doubt, but the fanfare around that was just over the top. If other surfers had to deal with the same shit Kelly’s had to deal with over the course of his career, they’d be spending more time on the shrink’s couch than in the water

          • Keanu808

I wouldn’t dismiss the cleansing power of a healthy bank balance, unlimited boards and equipment, free flights to whichever swell takes your fancy and homes in some if the best surf destinations in the world.

          • Encunted

Absolutely, and he definitely brought some of that shit on himself (Baywatch). I just don’t think others would handle it as well as he has/does

          • Keanu808

For sure he definitely has the maturity to handle it but he’ll throw that kinda cash at me and I’ll handle it as well!

          • Encunted

            Don’t forget the supermodels

          • Keanu808

Ah yes. It must have been ‘hard’ boning them

          • Dandaman

From other comments seen posted by you on here, I doubt it.

          • ManBearPig

            ok old man

    • Stamos

Kelly needs to change up his boards. He was back on a PU today, which looked better than the epoxys that he’s been riding, but there’s something not quite right. Probably should go up an inch.

      • zbah

Kelly’s boards do look a little short and his quik stab slash is looking a bit dated, overused and weak

      • jacopopeterman

        definitely

      • Gforceloo

I was thinking the same thing but who has the balls to tell the best surfer ever to walk this earth that he needs to go up an inch or two?

    • Redneck

julian wasnt bitching about his scores from the judges he was bitching cuz the commentators announced the wrong scores over the mic and gave him the wrong info

    • zbah

      Yep that was a ten

    • Mapski

“ticking all the boxes” with your critique. Parnell continues his one man war on pro surfing legitimacy with his uninformed blabbering. ASP seems more concerned with appealing to everybody rather tan those of us who love surfing. This could be a disaster as we slowly tune out for good .Two minutes of Ward stories is better than a full day of “Bells”.

      • shooootsbrah

fuck yea ward stories kills most surf footage.

    • Mapski

Why did they have to smear shit on Fannings face?

      • Encunted

That “shit” was smeared on his face by the traditional owners of the area, the Wathaurong people. They have been involved in the presentation ceremony since 2006

        • superjr

          Since 2006?! What a legacy…

          • Encunted

Long enough for the person posing the question to have a fucken clue about the ceremonial ritual that accompanies the presentation of the Bell each year

      • Ben

Cause they’re tired of the same old shit, i.e. three to the beach. Reckon they just smeared it on him to let him know.

    • Keanu808

Jordy needs to sort his fucking hair out

    • suberimakuri

No one has mentioned the second wave scores of both surfers.
If Jordy had a better backup wave then this whole argument would be moot.

Jordy’s 9.93 was pretty close to 9.97 required and close to a 10, the judges weren’t exactly miles off from straight 10’s.

  • Johnny Utah

ASP stop trying to convince surfers they rivalries. Hardly any of the surfers care or have a rivalry.

  • Big Jim

a big let down ! and nothing more

  • Johnny Utah

ASP stop trying to convince surfers they have rivalries. Hardly any of the surfers care or have a rivalry.

  • Julianus claudius

I still think the JJF ten pts ride wasn’t a 10 pts ride, and the fact they gave 9.93 pts to Jordy Smith validate my point! It’s tough to punt a nice aerial at Bells, but it’s even better to surf Bells perfectly and even punt a nice aerial at the end! Judges aren’t logical with their own system. The ASP need to work on this, I know it’s not easy to find a good solution, but each contest has it share of gross mistakes. Jordy Smith lost for 0.04 pts, exactly like the young wildcard in rd 2 against Kerr. And in both heats, it’s a shame. For the kid, it was confidence lost, and for Smith, a chance to keep his fight for the title alive.

  • John Dove

Carissa and some of those girls rip way harder than Mick

    • Guest

      You are a fucking idiot.

      • John Dove

Mick surfs like he’s making sure he finishes the wave and does as many maneuvers as possible, then worries about quality… those girls had that on the line attack

        • Guest

I worry about maneuver quality as opposed to maneuver quantity, so am I better than Fanning too?

Your logic makes no sense, not too sure what the fuck ‘on the line attack’ is either

          • John Dove

putting it all on the line, kind of attack

          • Guest

You dont make a whole lot of sense but I can see what you’re trying to say through your grammatical disaster zone. If you think the best surfing is determined by who is going for broke the you are a fucking retard. Which you are.

Seriously, where do such dumb people like you come from?

          • Stamos

You know very little about surfing, and even less about surfing at Bells and Winki.

          • Encunted

“I am better than fanning on some maneuvers.” Some comical shit gets written on here but this takes the cake.

          • John Dove

ya dude it’s called excellence. i accomplish a few mick fanning wraps and then move onto the next thing. mick fanning does 10000 and the judges still go ape shit. rather see someone do a trick perfectly in a way I’ve never seen. the amount of sections in the world is endless and mick’s repertoire is pretty limited/basic. he’s a fucking robot

          • Encunted

            Excellence or self-delusion?

          • John Dove

all the surfers I listed can do as good or better mick turns than mick (except gabby’s frontside wrap still needs work), but then felipe Toledo will probably end up doing them better than anyone

          • Encunted

Only four of them are on tour (I disagree about JJF’s being in the same league as Mick’s), which is what my comment refers to. 34 minus 4 = a few.

          • frother

hahaha stab should make an award just for you for how full retard that comment was. Then you can feel like you get recognized for those turns you do that are better than fannings.

          • James A

Better manoeuvres than fanning hey… U need to get off the acid….

        • jacopopeterman

          shut up

  • Charlie Conway

I know Bells has an iconic history but this event was almost as boring as Margies. I’m sure the guys on tour could list 10 waves they’d rather surf in a contest without even blinking.

    • Jack

and guess what? brazil is next…

      • Charlie Conway

        Can’t wait…

    • Megadude

Mate those waves looked so fun.. Dunno what tickles your pickle but I’d be on those nice long walls quicker than a nun on heat

      • Charlie Conway

Nuns in heat are like mush burger waves right? I’ve never been with a nun while she’s in heat, sounds like fun though.

    • Stamos

The great thing about Bells is it separates the best surfers from the rest. Look at the quarter finalists. Look at the honour board. That’s what surfing competitions are for, to determine the best (and despite the haters, Mick is clearly the best surfer in the world, and has been for the last 2 years).

  • mullrider

kolohe, cooked, julian, deep fried, jordy, burt to a crisp, the mute button got a good workout today when potts started rambling the same cliches he says at every event

  • Tsurf

Fuck. i want taj to win this world title already.

    • Paul

Taj? That old guy who have not yet learned how to surf with beautiful style?
Perhaps his inspiration comes from crabs or something.

      • Tsurf

Yes. I also dont understand people who wants medina to win the world title. different people, different prespectives. i guess thats what cool about the world.

    • sandy ravage

I’ve been waiting since he got his first win in Manly 15 years ago…..Taj will go down as the greatest competitive surfer to never win a title……what a shame. Taj is rad.

  • wally

Mick surfed with his usual range of stock turns. He also won every heat he surfed.
That’s because his stock turns are awesome! Just watch the board.

    • mullrider

im not saying he did this event that, but in the past he’s done some epic half turns with the hand throw or the same thing with that ugly as fuck layback(which isn’t) did you see jordy’s board and julians as they were hacking and risking an excellent score with a punt at the end and not getting rewarded, because all i seen was mick being so boring at one point i actually couldnt watch his waves, isnt it speed power and flow and COMMITMENT and innovative approach. just because jordy and julian and the kids can punt dosnt make it any less hard, jordy hit it on the head with his comment about them judging his ability thats bullshit, if mick surfed that wave the same as jordy which he couldnt he would have gotten a 12 and a blowjob from pottz

    • Stamos

If the internet was around in the 80s, there’d be people bitching that Curren was boring.

      • mullrider

yeah i forgot occy used to massive airs and tail throws, kelly came along innovating and got rewarded so why arnt these guys

        • Stamos

Kelly is the best surfer ever, that’s why he got rewarded. “Innovation” isn’t overly useful if you’re catching rails and bogging turns.

John John got a 10 for an air and a layback. The judges throw big scores (in this case probably too big) when they see something special, but doing a shit air shouldn’t get a good score just because it’s an air.

Julian is surfing better than ever, but his turns still aren’t as good as Mick’s.

          • mullrider

we are talking about the past and at the time it wasn’t slater it was curren, kelly got ripped off in heats a couple of times before the judges came around, now he’s the best, honestly even when mick does a throwtail its safe, oh yeah jordy was bogging rails you are an inept kook if you think that, ever seen these two guys surf side by side in the flesh? because its a joke how much better jordy is, same with julian and dane, they are on another level

          • Stamos

Kelly won the title in his first year on tour, and 6 in his first 7 years. I don’t think he was getting ripped off too often.

Mick’s throw tails are “safe” because he is so good that he has complete control over his board and his body. People thinking his turns at Winki weren’t critical haven’t surfed at Winiki, or don’t quite understand the meaning of the word, and how it applies to the judging criteria.

Jordy’s 9.93 was the best ride of the event, but watch it again, because he bogged/lost control of that first carve. His recovery straight into that reo/snap was phenomenal.

Seen all those guys surf live plenty of times. Julian is surfing the best he ever has, but if you think those guys are better than Mick, you don’t know what you’re talking about. Everyone’s entitled to their opinion, but you’re wrong.

          • mullrider

no micks throwtails are safe because he wont risking doing a big one the kids can do them things in there sleep expecially the way mick does them, i see what you mean about jordys first turn but he defs didnt bog he was going so fast and threw so much into it he’s board just couldnt handle it im surprised his fins didnt snap haha, so your saying mick is better than jordy or dane? i dont think anyone on the wct thinks that, just ask kelly.

      • mikeislame

        Comment of the year.

      • bitter guy

Bede gets shit scores for doing giant hacks. Curren was throwing way too much spray for anybody to call him boring but there’s no question he was underscored for not making really sketchy turns look sketchy enough (Kelly invented that)

  • James B

    Yeah, Mick!! Congrats, champ!!

And guys, who would say 2 months ago that after an australian leg with 3 righthander pointbreaks we would have a 20 years old brazilian goofy footer leading ASP world rankings??

As i said before, now that Gabirel Medina´s most difficult events are gone, who can stop the brazilian #1 in the world??

    • dd

      Fuck you’re boring

    • James A

      Slater,mick,parko…

    • Rohan4

If he gets semi final or higher in Rio we just might see the first ever Brazilian world champ.

    • Rattone

good chance Medina could take a title this year for sure! if not 2014 it will happen soon and James your still an annoying kook and always will be!! cheers!

    • Rattone

and its pretty safe to say J-Bay is going to be a tough one for him considering he has never surfed a major event there. Although the kid has a good backhand Parko, Jordy, Kelly and Taj all have a really good track record there and will likely school the youngin’

      • James B

Maybe, but every CT surfer has his throw aways, so Medina is strong in the lead.

        • Rattone

they do, but it takes more then 1 win to take the title. I know its mathematically possible but usually it takes 2 or 3 wins and yeah I get it, he has the ability to win at more then a couple of the spots left this year. just saying don’t count your chicks before they hatch James B, your going to jinx your boy claiming it so early in the year

          • Salazar Eliseo

Except for Parkinson in 2012, he only won the last event of the year, and the championship.

          • Rohan4

god he’ll be bloody unbearable if Medina does win!!!

        • Encunted

So was Parko before he did his ankle in 2009, I hope Gabe doesn’t get injured, but don’t count your chickens until they hatch.

          • James B

I´m not doing that. Actually, right now i´m just cruising and enjoying the moment, with Medina leading the rankings AND with Brazil as the next stop.

          • Encunted

            You going to the contest?

          • James B

            For sure!!!

          • Encunted

Enjoy! Hope you get some good waves. Any idea what the banks are like at the moment?

    • Julianus claudius

Himself. And the old guard. I’d like to see Medina winning if he wins it with the style, but there are too many contests left to say that. I guess now we already know that there are 90% of chances to see one of the top 6 being world champ (Medina, Parkinson, Fanning, Slater, Burrow or De Souza), with a wildcard given to JJF and Jordy Smith if they keep surfing like they did at Bells, especially Jordy.

    • frother

you seriously think these were his hardest events? try stopping john john/kelly/parko/seabass/maybe even JOB if he’s up for it at pipe. J-Bay is a really tough wave and Jordy has it on lock. its hard to match those guys in big barrels. Once again you manage to make a post that has nothing to do with brazillians about brazillians. I think next year will be his year once he masters the tubes.

    • bitter guy

James, we all cry about judging. we would be crying even if Toledo got burned. you, on the other hand, only care when the green and yellow get burned and its all a giant conspiracy

      • James B

Wrong. You just cry about judging when one of your darlings get burned. And as a biased guy, you try to change my point of views. Take just a little look in my blog and you´ll see that i don´t care only when brazilians get robbed.

    • Jimmy the Saint

He might well be leading the championship but that fade into Bede has to be the lamest thing I have ever seen in a competition. I think he tried to make an excuse about it, but he lost me as a fan. Maybe when he wins the championship (mightn’t be this year, but he will win a few) he might start to act like a champion

      • James B

Kelly Slaters also has his good share of raw tactics/acts on WCT. Just ask guys like Shane Beschen, Rob Machado… Do you think Kelly is a champion? Or your memories are just selective?

        • Jimmy the Saint

Fair point, some of Slaters tatics in the past have been thourougly lame, like taking Machado’s Maurice Cole board back in 1995. Slater wasn’t acting like a champ then, nor was Medina against Bede. Completely right to drop in on him, but the fade and outstreched arms was like something from Thierry Henry. It was lame, don’t care who did it, but I was dissapointed in Medina, because I think he is actually underrated, and I don’t know what he has to do, how many heavy waves he has to charge or how many competitions he has to win for the doubters to be silenced. And I am not singling him out – if anyother surfer did that I would have wrote the same thing, but there aren’t too many of them that I would be too bothered about by their actions, but as a Medina fan (former fan in fact) I am dissapointed. Maybe medina wouldn’t do it again, he is very young after all and I am sure he is learning as he goes along!

          • Encunted

            Word

  • Frank Smith

Seriously, who soaped up Taj’s board?

  • NEGATRON

Right STAB fantasy Surfer results… coming in at last place is Charlie Conway. Would seem he forgot to even get his picks in on time. Loser.

Surprise surprise, James B is coming second to last with a solid team of C-grade picks.

Taking the glory for picking the most boring surfers for the win is yours truly and whilst I am blowing my own trumpet I am also am leading overall… suck it up fella’s and up your game.

    http://www.fantasysurfer.com/club/?id=8082

    • James B

Am i really that popular nowadays?

      • James A

        No… Your not…

      • Rattone

you live in a fucking dreamworld James, get off your pedestal, your nowhere near as cool as you think you are

        • James B

I´ve just asked because people keep talking my name all the time, as Negatron just did.

          • Rohan4

I’m amazed that you’re joining in James bee. Good sport you are! For someone who is supposedly SO wrong all the time ppl.sure spend a lot of time and effort replying to you!

          • James B

Yeah, they do. Amazing how a south american alone can make this short circuit in those guys brains.

      • NEGATRON

You’re about as popular as De Souza in Australia.

        • James B

It couldn´t be different, as i very often expose some truth that australians wouldn´t like to see. But i can live with that burden.

    • rarara

ha wish i had of known about this earlier! words cannot CANNOT express my happiness at seeing James B at the bottom- its christmas all over again

    • bitter guy

920 points? ho brah, you must have da inside kine info. nice picks.

    • Jimmy the Saint

      Negatron is Richie Porta….

      • NEGATRON

There is some truth in that statement… at times I am the Richie Porta of my Island.

  • binklebonk

did anyone happen to count how many times potter said “blah blah….mick fanning, the fastest surfer ever born/to ever stand up/to ever ride a wave/ever in the world” …. holy shit he just regurgitated the same waffle/drivel over and over…

also, why is the transitional graphic (the one behind the asp badge and stats etc that flash up on screen) so retarded?.. it has a three finned board with all three (weirdly shaped) fins set in a line, all at about 2 inches from the tail.. and some bizzare concave rig going on… sorry, i hate pedantic people… but that graphic annoys me..
would the PGA have an “anotomically” incorrect golf club for their graphic? .. i dunno, maybe.. whatever..

    • Jimmy the Saint

Yeah I hate that graphic, it looks like it was drawn by a four year old, who doesn’t know what a thruster is!

  • John Dove

It’s funny what Jordy said about him getting scored against his own ability cus they let Mick surf like that all day and win

  • http://www.cdc.gov/ Mono Pauly

They get scared. When their kids aren’t laughing no one is happy.

  • Rohan4

@ Dooma. Another excellent article sir. Agreed the double tap bottom turn is damn ugly.

    • Duck

Dooma has Jordy’s balls so deep in his mouth he can barely speak.

      • Jeff M

I was surprised Freddy didn’t talk some shit after he went down to Owen

        • Jeff M

          again. at bells.

  • John Dove

Why don’t judges just decide priority on the spot? It’s all circumstantial… just like in real life if you’re equally sharing waves with one gentleman… If judges treat it like that surfers might waste less waves with unnatural tactics

  • frothdog

NO wonder the Association of Stupid Pricks is so keen to bury that old heat analyzer forever.. quickly jump between the scoring waves and see how useless the judges are. No WAY!.. Must be hard to sit down & do a hard days work tho with richie porta hanging out the back of you all day.. but the result perfectly reflected the new dream tour judging criteria actually… most boring surfer won.. feel bad for jordy his wave was a 10 but he should have had a backup anyhow. julian is a whinging fukwit. But thats competitive surfing for ya.

  • Encunted

I commented a few days ago that this looked like Jordy’s contest to lose. Didn’t contemplate that he’d be robbed of it

  • DGCOVA

I said yesterday that Jordy was going to win the event…and the aussies wont be overscored…… but only the Judges saw Julian better than him…..

    Jonh Dove great idea duh..

    James B ….. é nois!!!!

  • disqus_RLFW2pX47V

Sorry guys, but Adriano has the flow and the power…the power is consequence of the flow, isn´t it?

    • Ben

No… He has power, but garbage flow/style. DOUBLE PUMP FO POWAA

      • Duck

No double pump, hater. Get your shit together.

  • h a k i m

CARISSA would beat easy : CJ, Wilkinson, K. Bambino, Bret Simpson…

    • sandy ravage

      No…..just no.

    • Paul

      So true

    • ThatDank

      toledo,pupo

    • frother

you went full retard. you never go full retard.

      • Encunted

Best comment I’ve read today. Thanks for the laugh

  • mattNJsurf

    cheers

  • JM101

Watch the heat replay of JJF and Taj’s first big scores where JJF clearly has a better wave. Even after the scores drop, Ross Williams, fully convinced JJF had the higher score (maybe he misheard, but that’s not important) explains why JJF had the higher score move for move, and that Taj’s wave was too safe and didn’t push progress, etc. Then, there was that beautiful half-second of dead air where Parnell had no idea what he was talking about… This is a microcosm of the ASP and judging at this point in time. Surfers who actually charge that are commentating will physically re-arrange judging scores entering their brains so they make sense when its time for the words to come out of their mouths, or just speak in utter confusion and bewilderment (Occy.) Once again, its no coincidence who ended up in the finals and why, and wow is it painful to take in.

    • bitter guy

absolutely terrible, JJFs first turn is way better than Taj’s, they kind of go move for move on the next 3 turns, and JJF ends with air-reverse to flat while Taj gets stuck under the lip on a floater that would have sucked anyway, and Taj comes out a point higher? what a fucking mess, starting to look like WWE

      • JM101

Absolutely. Even before the event began there was a lot of talk about how there was no way that anyone but an Aussie was leaving with the Bell. After Jordy’s robbery, it was pretty obvious. At least they admit the WWE is fixed.

    • Encunted

Parnell would have no idea regardless, but I totally agree with you

      • JM101

        Parnell is a donut.

  • Rzztch

Yeah, Kelly needed to be on a slightly longer Simon Anderson. He would go nuts on an increased volume 6’0 round tail in those down the line point conditions. His Merrick c.a.d. software have their moments but not at down the line racetrack sections like the past week. He’s a powerful grown man ripper, needs to be on grown man equipment. but those epoxies rule the universe at Pipe and Cloudbreak. So I’m pretty clueless I reckon:)

Interesting comment. You could be right.

  • zbah

John johns 10 was mental but how is it that Julian’s full rote slob only got a 6.83? Judges know fuck all about airs

    • Stamos

Fortunately it’s a surfing contest, not an air contest, and if you’re only going to do 1 move at Winki, then it’s gotta be a shit load better than that to get an excellent score. It was over scored if anything.

  • Bryan Little

jordy was robbed ! naai man . not cool ek se

  • Analyzer

The judges gotta get their shit together! Sick and tired of seeing waves badly judged! If Mick’s wave against Jules was a 9.4, then how in this world can Jordy’s wave not be a 13?!! It’s just a shame when the quality of the judges doesn’t match the surfers’ quality. Also, the commentary is just too bad. They sound like robots speaking, they’re afraid to say that certain waves are over-scored, and while commenting are always using the same fucking expressions like “seamless surfing” and shit like that. Overall, congratulations to Mick on another Micktory, even though i feel Julian got robbed on that semi in terms of scores and that priority situation.

  • Teeps

Julian deserved the score over Jordy, you win the event with 2 waves not 1. “Kelly said this, Kelly said that” Kelly surfed crap that’s all there is to it, haven’t you seen the movie “Grumpy Old Men”.
“Carissa, Tyler and Steph better than bottom 10 from mens”, maybe Carissa and Tyler wouldn’t go as far as Steph.
Wave priority system by the judges was just plain pathetic, can be the difference between a win or loss. DO YOUR JOB JUDGES SWITCH ON!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Encunted

Are you trying to tell me that Jordy’s last wave was really only .8 points better than Julian’s last scoring wave? The judges might agree with you, but I’m not buying it.

      • Teeps

        Yep.

    • Julianus claudius

You’re right, but you add the two scores and make a total, right? So if Jordy’s wave was a ten, he won the heat, that’s quite simple. I guess.

    • Rohan4

Kelly did not surf crap. That air reverse and the turns he did whole event were as good as ever.

  • luca

If I hear the expressions “money turn”, “casual approach”and “power source” again, I`ll go on a killing spree.

    • frother

what about “connected the dots”?! fuck i swear pottz said that like 5 times in one heat.

    • song?

I was mashing the mute button the entire contest

Yeah the judges don’t judge anything except what the board does – AKA Parko losing at snapper = style don’t matter, they’re happy to tell u that themselves?

  • Raul Quintanilha Messias

”man turn” from Potzz. Not again!!! Why can’t they reinvent themselves?

    Judges:
    1, Lower the scale.
    2. Stop rewarding Joel and Mick’s ultra safe approach. They surf better than that, but why should they risk it when they have the formula wired.
    Potts:
Say “connecting the dots” once more and the bunny dies.

Mick’s act is so old. It was old in 2007 when he won his first. It was old when Barton Lynch and Damien Hardman won their titles. Switch it up, or else the mental airs and Jordy’s power antics are going to cease.

  • Mayhem Madness

Mick is one of my favorite surfers, but i definitely agree with the fact that his surfing is getting predictable (boring). But his surfing is flawless, he just makes it look easy. If the judges score based on the potential of each surfer, then Mick deserves lower scores, no doubt. He pulled maneuvers that he times perfect and makes 100% of the time. Because they didn’t do that with Mick, Jordy should have got a 10 on his Round 5 wave and beat Julian. The guy surfed that wave to shreds. Medium sized wave, who cares, especially after seeing that monsterous carve straight into a huge blow tail (with literally no setup time in between). Should have been Jordy and Taj in the final. And Taj deserves that world title this year
