Mick Fanning Wins the 2012 Billabong Pro, Tahiti

Mick Fanning has beaten Joel Parkinson in the final of the 2012 Billabong Pro, Tahiti. Mick clocked a 9.37 and 9.50 to beat Joel’s 9.50 and 8.87 in what was as exciting a final as you could probably hope for. “I knew that 35 minutes was a long time and I knew they were gonna come, it was just a matter of when,” said Mick breathlessly, immediately following the final. “I just kept my patience, y’know, it’s the final, you’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain. I just tried to keep my composure. I had Raimana, from Raimana’s World, he was directing me around the traffic and called every single wave perfectly, so I was stoked.”

So, what happens when you need a back-up and the lineup switches to silent mode? “I guess you’ve just gotta sit there,” continues Mick. “It can turn on and off so quickly here and you can get two scores in a coupla minutes pretty quick. I just knew I needed one wave and I didn’t have priority on that last one, but I sorta made Joel go that first one. I didn’t know how that one was, it looked like a nuts one, then on that last one I tried to ride high and tight like John John.”

It was the second final this year for Joel, who lost to John Florence in the Billabong Pro, Rio. And for the most part, he thought he had it in the bag this time. “I led a 35-minute heat til the last four minutes,” he said. “One bad wave choice. I went one that I thought was gonna be a good one, and Mick just got that one on me. You can’t really dispute that he was one of the best surfers the whole event. It hurts for sure but I’m over it. I guess it keeps me coming back, whatever it is. I got my anger out, out there, I’m good to go now. I guess a result’s a result. It just would’ve been so sweet to have that Teahupoo trophy. I don’t have it but at least I’m back next year, and I’ll fight for it again.”

The win also puts Mick and Joel into first and second on the WT rankings, respectively. But, as Mick told Stab after the Volcom Pro, Fiji, he won’t concern himself with it just yet: “I look at it as a whole,” he said. “Once you get down to the last two or three events, you start looking at who’s in the race, but until then everyone’s just building points. If you can get third or better in each event, you’re doing pretty well.”

Congrats to Mick and Joel from Brazil!
What a final!

They deserve it, and the heat joel x jeremy I believe Parko won it… no grab drop, pumping down the line until get shacked…

About Medina, he made a really nice insight in his twitter after the heat, he says: Only the fact the everyone expects me to win this event, or win against John John is already a victory from me, shows that I’m doing good, 3 years ago when I won in France the King of the Groms, I could never imagine in my first year on tour I would get a 5th in pipe, a 10 and second place in Fiji and a 10 and a quarter final at Chops…

however, different than a lot of people think, Brazil loves theses guys and we are so pumped and stocked for Mick and Parko, because only a kook or a really big hatter would say that this as a bad event, or that Mick or Joel did not deserve it…
the put on a show that we were waiting for so long!

Congrats guys, and put a great Aussie BBQ for these guys when they get home!

2.

Jeremy got robbed in the quarter

3.

parko shouldnt have been in the final anyway so who cares if he got robbed.

4.

imagine being a judge and giving a near perfect score 9.77 to parko for a stock standard pretty good runner just because he needs it? where they laughing in the tower? did they just want to see jeremys reaction? WTF

5.

Anyone that thinks Jeremy won – look at the replay of his 8.5 and Joels 9.77 from the front. Jeremy drops in and has to stall for a short barrel, Joel had to pump into a longer shack with 2 sections. Not a 9.77 compared to other heats but what matter is that it was better than Jeremy’s wave by a bit more than a point, and it was.

1.

Best final ever!!!

2.

mick and joel weren’t in the final at bells this year
noob stab

3.

They weren’t in the final at Bells, Mick beat Joel in the semi. Then Joel beat Mick in the semi in Brazil. First final they’ve met this year..

4.

Wasn’t it Mick v Kelly in the bells final?

5.

Jeremy got robbed in the quarter

6.

Apologies for the brain snap. Last year just doesn’t feel like long ago, does it?

    7.

    I guess not..

8.

Should have been Jeremy in that semi, I don’t even like the little goblin, but he was robbed pure and simple.

9.

I just like to see the winner go through and in that heat it was jeremy. Something really odd seems to happen to him a bit, he must be pretty confused and frustrated but the more he blows up at the judges the more they will continue to do that to him.

10.

joel was so fucking overscored against JEREMY FLORES!!!!!! it was so unfair. JEREMY FLORES IS THE MAN!!!!!

11.

He was pretty robbed… 9.77 was ridic.

12.

13.

billabong paid them to overscore me

14.

I saw fanning get a way better one for 9.5

15.

Fanning was over-scored in the final, that 9.37 was no better than Parkos 8.87 – Parko was robbed.

16.

parko shouldnt have been in the final anyway so who cares if he got robbed.

18.

That final was an exhibition on how to ride a barrell… Epic… damn they make it look easy… Go the Aussies!!

19.

Such good waves but it didn’t look like teepoo today more like pumping indo. It’s much more fun to watch it when there is more west in the swell and the waves are much crazier. But it was still epic well done Mick.

20.

medina seemed rattled

    21.

I would have loved to spend those final two minutes out there with John after he gave up. Poor form gabby

22.

After yesterday I thought Medina was going to fire and make me eat my words but the wheels fell off and the swell was backing off during his heat so now we wait and see if pipe fires to see him ride a 8ftX death kegs. Seemed rattled and surprised by the power in today’s waves. Should chase a few swells to heavy spots so he can surf waves like today with more confidence rather than practicing that air he can already do. Then he will be world title contender.

23.

MEDINA 4.17 ON A DAY LIKE TODAY REALLY.

    24.

Medina’s still just a scrawny little kid, he needs time to grow and get used to the heavy stuff, JJF was lucky enough to grow up in surf like that. Although watching it reminded me of that time Greg Norman collapsed against Faldo many years ago, pretty painful to watch.

Well done Mick, good to see him charging at the top of the table!

25.

Nothing more than the true statement of the further decline of pro surfing , terrible judging decisions, old school surfing [cira 96 at best] and finalists that surf at best of a bygone eras , stale , safe , boring, exciting in 96, nothing more than a disgrace in 2012!

    26.

    Shut up fool

27.

Judging was up to shit through out the event, judges realised they underscored joel and overscored jeremy on first exchange, so had to compensate with final wave.

28.

GT – worse media man on the entire tour…wheres Occy?

    29.

could not agree more. The worst is an understatement.

30.

nice surfing Mick. In the future, please use the “No Claim” claim.

31.

Parko lost to Jeremy, then he lost to john john, then he lost to mick. On his best day parko couldn’t have made either of the waves john did and if slater had gotten johns best semi wave the judges would have given him a ten and prattled on about how no one else could have made that barrel etc. but we are stuck with the same old judges, same old surfers, same old bad calls

32.

Wens occy heat!

    33.

You post the same thing on just about every stab thread.. can you at least spell ‘when’ right? The OCD in me cringes every time…

34.

Ok I have checked and rechecked the footage of fannings 10 point wave. That was not a 10point wave no fucking way.
Still a legit winner overall but not a 10point wave.

35.

Has anyone from stab ever been asked to commentate one of these asp things? If so, what’s up with that

36.

Congrats to Mick and Joel from Brazil!

Good on ya Tiago that’s the spirit .

38.

Medina was undorscore, brazil for life, judges loving jonh jonh penes. why jonh jonh win, medina true winner, medina. vamos gabi

    39.

your fucking dumb MEDINA had the worst heat of his life he was lucky to get a 4.17

40.

Thanks again ASP for showcasing why competitive surfing will never be a main stream sport.
- surfers progress on luck (would be more enjoyable to watch longer heats with enough contestable set waves for both eg JJf vs JP).
- judging criteria (is generated income per surfer now an official or still un-official judging criteria?) Judging seems pretty random to me at times. Have you considered judges who produce scores without chit chatting amongst themselves? Have you thought about the revolutionary concept of the “unbiased” judge?
- have you considered independent commentators who would add more than about 50 permutations of the words awesome, great, fantastic, … ? Have you considered robots doing the commenting? It would be refreshing to hear a critical voice once in a while.
Please keep up the good work. Nobody that surfs needs more interest in surfing.
Congratulations to all the surfers.

    41.

HEAT LENGTH I was thinking the same thing… I understand people may contest because the surfers get tired. BUT they should increase final length by 15 minutes, semi final by 10, and quarters by 5… something like that, so it’s not like bam bam event over right after round 5. much more fair this way.

COMMENTATING, wow how refreshing is it to have kelly? anyone else is soo boring, like just reiterate “how great everything is, all the surfers, the event, the workers, this is the time, this is the score” …look at golf the other sport with downtime, the best commentator of all time, johnny miller, has championship experience, and is just HONEST and CANDID, and sometimes HARSH. either the commentators are just boring people or really afraid to say what they think, which is the opposite of what it should be

42.

oh shut up

43.

hey aussies, good for ya! put on a nice barbecue and enjoy some cold ones and your short party, cuz after all. the circus is not done yet. i guees things starting to turn a lil’ bit on tour these days. I mean, underscores athletes, overscored athletes, even aussies are claiming after every single wave.. guess what??? even fanning is claiming!! i must be dreaming. is it true? aussies claiming ? i thought claiming was for brazzos and no one else. i thought doing that was a bad thing!?! what is happening guys? i think the aussies are inspired by brazzos. or i think the aussies wan’t so bad a world title that maybe claiming they’ll get that score that needed to fullfill their wave ride.

EVEN FANNING IS CLAIMING GOD DAMMIT. HE WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO DO THAT. HE’S AN AUSSIE! HE CAN’T DO THAT.

    44.

It’s one thing to mildly claim a truck size barrel that spits you out, and another to claim two turns followed by an air reverse at a poop beach break.

      45.

mate, dont tell me what i cannot do when you all do it the same. everyone claims. of course thats good and powerfull after a sick ride.
and you don`t know shit about sizes mate. call that a truck-sized barrel? hum.. maybe a motorcycle could fit in there. a truck? not at all.

ps.: leave GT the fuck alone. the guy don’t give a f.. about your arses. anyway…

        46.

I don’t think you got the point, mate. It was hyperbole.

    47.

You dumb fucking Brazzo! Mick is claiming a 6ft epic barrel… The dumb Brazzo’s claim a reo & a floater on a 1ft wave! There is a bit of a difference and its fine to claim good waves! Please stay in Brazil eating your Acai and fingered your HIV ridden women as we really dont want their stinky big asse’s tainting australia.

      48.

thats because you can’t handle a real women mate! and talking about surfing cuz that’s what i came for. did I saw weeks ago julian wilson at huntington claimin 2 backhands snaps wich the judges gave him a 8. / 9. tottally overscored by the way!!!
that you didn’t saw huh?? shut the fuck up aussie boy. claiming after 2 shitty backhand snaps..?? no i don’t think aussies claim just for the bigger stuff. just to finish the sarcasm. you all may got the smiles right know with this mick campaign and shit. that’s not gonna last too long and you know that. so drink and smoke weed as much as you can and just wait for lowers and probably watch robbot fanning with that mechanical predictable surf we’ve been used to get from him. clearly he will not even make to the quarters. maybe steamer maybe hawaii he will shine again.. besides that…

        49.

        vai tomar no cu…

50.

its hilarious that people keep coming back to GT, and what a wank he is, but its true. I have never heard a more butt kissing, wannabe insider do commentary. Google: ‘Craig Sager’, who does TNT basketball games, and you will see GT’s future. At some point the Tour needs to get a stable of main full Tour commentators, and have rotating guests based on event sponsorship. No one wants to see ‘Gay Sailor Chic’ anymore, simply because the guy started Von Zipper, and they are owned by Billabong. Bootlicking is not an interview talent, and we do not want to hear about which pros are dying to ride you double on their skis.

51.

Apart from the trolls and the humour, why is it that a lot of the people posting on this site are straight-up haters or inarticulate critics? More than any other surf website so far as I can tell. Too bad. I watched most of the final day of the contest and I thought it was great entertainment and inspiring surfing. I’m guessing most people that tuned in felt the same. I don’t know, maybe part of this is misplaced nationalistic pride that is prevalent on the Stab comments. How about appreciating talent regardless of country? As far as claims go, I think that wave calls for claims, no? Some of those tubes were sick! And I bet the energy a surfer feels making it out of one is ecstatic and contagious. As far as all the ASP and contest judge haters, nothing wrong with questioning a score because grading this sport is subjective. And the ASP could improve here and there too, but overall (barring the error on Kelly’s early title last year) it’s been pretty good run the last couple years and a reasonably well put together WCT.

    52.

two things only i could criticise -
    1) atrocious sailor hats (with associated sailor)
    2) flores was robbed , but he handled it well

    Mick was mosdef on song

53.

ha ha ha @ comment # 40… Aussies sitting top of the tables champ in both mens and womens… domination.. looks like its gona be another aussie world title to put in the cabinet… Where’s brazil mate??? How many titles you won?? Oh wait, its coming isn’t it… you’ve been saying that for the last 5 years, we’re all still waiting dickhead!!

54.

For all the hating units, you buggers are still watching this comp enough to talk shit endlessly, so unless you have something better to do……log on again next time eh, and pretend you know more, can surf better, and have bigger balls, better airs or what the fuck ever else wacked shit you are sniffing sideways…..actually, why am I even here, oh yeah……I surf and I think having live access to sick surfing is a sweet deal. You groms should remember we used to get comp info from tracks mag in newsprint black and white….whining bitches. Bring on the comments as well, I won’t be back web sluts, so you are talking to yourself….again. Ahhhhhh

55.

Oh, and you racist idiots, get a passport and sort your shit out

56.

I thought Jeremy Flores was robbed of a semi appearance anyone else notice this?

57.

I hope Kia Otton wins next year!

58.

I hope Kia Otton wins next year!

59.

Sorry to spoil a good conspiracy theory (and don’t we all love them), but the simplest glance at results over the years shows surfers rarely win events put on by their sponsors. For years Kelly owned the ‘bong comps and AI the Quik ones. Not much has changed. Let the inevitable references to this year’s Bells final commence…. B :)

60.
