He surfed well and had his moments, but Mick surfed the wave top to bottom consistently where Kelly would pull something off… recover… set up… and then turn.. Mick would take off .. .hack… move.. hack.. move… hack.. He surfed it top to bottom. Its a contest. I would have liked to have seen Slater win, but Mick won fair and square by surfing his waves in the 9 range … adding variety to his flow and turns.. maybe not one big rotator, 360, or alley … but he won the heat by dominating each wave and not recovering… waiting in flats… and then check turning..

the real controversy is that jordy is still doing superman airs… quite possibly the ugliest thing i have seen. the absurdity of it is baffling. the judges need to start taking away points for superman. its a safety board grope maneuver…. sort of like what you would someone with a disease that had sex with surfboards would do.. supermobia

Kelly gets a 8.07 for completeing his ride from start to finish. was his ride really a point lower than fannings where he falls at the end?

It was great to see Mick win after such a lousy last year. It was close but Kelly pulled manouvers no one in the game except now maybe John John (btw another seppo) have the balls to attempt in a contest much less stick. And his next wave with the carving 360 (again no one in the game can pull) and flow right in the next manouver AND FINISH THE WAVE. For and 8.07? Yeah right. It’s OK, a long year and we need the suspense. Good job Mick and sweet it the Coolie kid did it for Michael Petersen.

If it was in the 80´s I would agree with the result. At that time the wave size and extension was big part of criteria. Nowadays, while the audience demands inovation and full commitment, it is a bit embarassing to deal with this kind of robbery, even worse because of the broadcast.

Yes, you can tell that KS had it other way around many times in the past, and it may even be a personal matter – ASP staff and crew getting tired of him. But once you make this kind of choice, and this year it is already two in a row, when ASP does not award the best surfer of the [final] heat, theytake the risk of making it a parody
of themselves.

Snappers, although TB clearly lost, was an understandable call, due to the enviromment created by the supporters of both sides, the noise about Adriano´s floater in Brazil & etc. But 41 KS keeps innovating, bringing audience and money, and if, sometimes, one can be uneasy with the fact that one guy dominates the tour for so long, it is not his fault. ASP would do better if they paid therapy for very talented guys like, Joel, TB &Jordy than simply mistakenly judgment on purpose.

BTW, I like superman, and Mick got a 9+ doind a simple double grab…

1) Slater won the heat.

2) Slater’s surfing was amazing but was HIDEOUS to watch.

3) Mick was much more fluid, polished, and much easier on the eyes.

4) Slater is so good, so dialed in, he’s just become BORING. It’s pretty clear watching this heat that the maneuvers themselves have become no different that riding a bike around the block with this guy. He’s on autopilot, just trying to push maneuvers as hard as he can. And it looks BAD.

5) Someone mentioned Slater for Kai’s next film. Most of the guys in Kai Neville’s films have style. Good style. Slater’s surfing is more like a robot or something – would stick out like sore thumb.

Another win for Safe Surfing……..ASP = BORING!!!!! Cant wait for the new Dane and Ando movie….ASP SUCKS!!!! PS im an Aussie….Fanning DID NOT WIN!

I watched the whole comp and dunno who won. Only a bee’s dick in it. I will have to watch it again closely……Remember this though, surfing is easy, after a while. Judging surfing is always hard no matter how long you been doing it. Throw the judges a bone because even the Lord knows Slater has a had a few go his way over the years. ….

Was an epic final. After watching micks 9.7 again he had way bigger wave and it was way more critical. he held way more speed than slater and was in the lip on all the big outside turns and coming out faster than he went in. Steph gilmore got a 10 and the end of her wave was nothing special its the high risk turns out back that are rewarded. Slaters backup may have been a little underscored but half his turns were mid face and reverses at the end of wave are scored nothing like if you have the balls to do em straight up ie the 10. Fleas dick in it either way, surfing wins. slaters got a few undeserved extra points over years for being slater and making things look flashy.

mick’s 9.7 aside, what should the score be for his first wave? a snap, wrap, then double grab air? 7?

Judges shat bricks when they realised they gave 10s for one menouver wave with 20 minutes to go. They did what they have been doing for years and evened things up. They underscored Kellys next one. Don’t understand? Thats how it works. Don’t even try to compare heat scores. The judges job is to decide 1st and 2nd, simple as that. Sure they oversored one of Kellys and underscored his next one, which was sloppy judging but at the end of the day Mick won because he got two long waves on tore the fuck out of them.

Funny how literally NOBODY of credible worth whether they be a free-surf pro or a pro tour surfer would deny they Kelly is a freak, and what he has done in his career is just beyond comprehension. And what he does in those heats of consequence is just unexplainable, it is disturbing that you can still pick faults with the guy.

what an epic final. that full-rote was a 10 straight up, undeniable. ever seen someone do that with a contest jersey on? exactly, thats why they gave him a fucking 10. kellys back up was a high 8 in my book, but watevs. we witnessed a final with proper rail surfing, big airs, and most importantly no stink bug brazzos. all in all a great day for pro surfing.

Agreed 100% he’s the best, past and present. When age factors in he’s even more unfathomable. Stylistically though, I’m not a fan, and I’m not the only one who sees it this way.

Kelly’s got great style on the face, he pretty much copied Curren’s bottum turn. However in the air he’s gotta have the worst style on tour, arms flailing everywhere. Ugh

I’m an aussie and admittedly no surf judge. Even watching general heats i find it hard to distinguish who the better surfer is unless they fall when watching surfing at this level but I must say I did’nt really think Mick’s waves of which there were only 3 I think were that amazing. It was just the usual stuff I’d expect where as Kelly’s was remarkable. Personally I think he was robbed. No fault of Mick’s who I like. Just finished his book actually. I did’nt think this result did surfing comps any credibility judging wise.
Does anybody know what nationality these five judges are. In my opinion they should be from different nations.
I want Australia to win but not like this. I should feel prouder!

I think the problem with this heat was the score on the first wave. What was it a 9.3 or something. The judges pinned the score so high they had no where to go. Then when you compare Micks first wave to Kellys carving 3 wave or even the one when he did the little revvy on the end it screams shafted. Micks first wave should have been a low 8. Argh dont even know why i am writing this the forced stoke Mick had at the end kind of said it all he knew he lost, its never fun to win something that you know you don’t deserve. I’m not a seppo either.

Kelly is a total freak, no wonder bruce and andy call him like that.
That air was a complete demonstration of freakness, that air was directed to the beach, not to the wave itself. If you stop and wonder how much of wave mechanics and surf knowledge the guy knows to throw a fucking massive air with not so much speed on a close out, it’s really amazing. He even landed it on the flats, it’s totally fucking sick. But he didn’t win that heat though. Believe me, I’m trying to learn how kelly’s mind works after watching all those heats over the years, and I learned a little bit on how he thinks and he wasn’t in the competition at that particular moment, he was trying to show who’s the man on the air = he is. He was disturbed with that first ride of Mick, where Mick finished it with an air, so Kelly was only trying to demonstrate who can fucking do airs on the tour. The guy is a surf competiton genious, but he wasn’t surfing a heat at that moment, he was just overcoming mick in his own mind. And he did it, he overcame mick in his mind with a superior overwhelmind fucked up sick air. Only after winning mick in his mind he could surf the heat. But then it was too late. Kelly wins are totally based on pure, raw talent, I mean, his surfing is totally based on that cause he can pull on the tactics too, but look at the mans calf, I think he can throw an air to mars if he wants to.
But Mick’s surfing was based on solid and fast rail surfing, shredding the lip of the wave, top to bottom and stuff. He deserved the win. If kelly had ten more minutes, he would have thrived if he could have connected a massive air with big turns. But that was just not the case.

Carving 3′s are not difficult or aesthetically pleasing. Judges please score them as you would a chop hop at pipe. Kelly lost in a close final, deal with it (whinging seppos). How many close finals/heats has Kelly been given the nod on because he is ‘Kelly’. I’m personally glad the old cunt lost, hideous style these days. Kelly peaked earlier in the day (the full rotation aside). Was absolutely brilliant in his quarter final, and that 9.93 in his semi, but in the final he was slightly off. His turns were not as smooth, just slightly caught. Compare the carving 360 from the final to the one he did in the quarter.

Mick meanwhile was super sharp in the final. He caught the best waves, and did the best turns on the best sections.

Interesting comments. I saw the Slater 360 air on tv, while at work on the gas rigs. Not many Gas workers surf so it was cool to hear the men say; “holy fuck! did you see that?”. The move was recognised by all these non surfers as the wildest piece of surfing footage they had ever seen.
I find it strange that Pro surfing is demanding acrobatic performance from the Pros but awarded slater a loss for giving them exactly what they have been asking for.
Are you not entertained? What more could Slater give us? Be careful ASP, dont scare the Man off.
