Meet your Billabong Pro, Rio quarterfinalists

The swell stuck around at Barra Da Tijuca today for rounds three, four and five of the Billabong Pro, Rio. In fact, it cleaned up nice and pretty and really, kinda turned on. The quarterfinalists were decided in four-ish feet barrels and some of the best match-us of the year went down (Taj, Johnny and Jules? Woah!).

Joel Parkinson bounced back after losing in round four, scooping two round five barrels and the day’s highest heat total of 18.33, eliminating Jordy Smith. “It was just one of those heats where I waited for a while and got one good one and thought, that could be amazing, just that one wave,” Joel said. “Then I got another one. Poor Jordy really got nothing. It was a lot like home, the good ones have a really nice draw on the water off of the bank. It’s really dumpy, so you air drop into it and it’s hard to find a rail. Who would have thought you’d come to Brazil and get two 9s getting barrelled?” It’s a good question. And, the rivalry between Joel and Jordy is now totally official! “I think there is a rivalry,” said Joel. “We don’t talk about it, but we just keep catching each other. We’ve had three events and it’s four times that we’ve surfed against each other and it’s been back and forth.”

Josh Kerr, 28, Australian and dangerous, was unstoppable. He clocked another of the days’ highest combined totals of 17.84, pushing Adriano De Souza into round five. But it was Ads’ 10-pointer that got Josh’s blood rushing. “I saw Adriano’s wave go down and we were sitting in a different spot than everyone else,” said Josh. “We were getting nines and 10s and I feel bad for Adriano. I wasn’t expecting a little backdoor shootout and I’m stoked to get some good waves.” Despite the loss, Adriano bounced back in round five. “I was focused on the right,” he said. “But I knew there was a little channel and I went over to the left. Luck is really going my way and I’m stoked. The waves were really hard and I’m stoked to make it through this heat.” Josh and Adriano will face off again in the fourth quarter.

Another of the days’ biggest standouts was John Florence. He beat Miguel Pupo in round three, then took down Julian Wilson and Taj Burrow in round four. “It was Taj and Julian and those are two guys you never want to have in a heat,” Johnny said. “It was windy when I first paddled out and I was trying to do airs and have fun with it. Then the wind stopped and I got the one in the middle of the heat that was a pretty decent barrel. I finally got that last one and there was only 10 seconds left. I wasn’t even sure I had gotten the score when I hit the beach. I’m stoked to make the Quarters here in Brazil. For me to be able to make Quarters here is amazing.”

fuck i really hope kerrsy smashes de souza in front of the brazzos

2.

that turn of Heitor was so sick. Best maneuver in a long time. Braking boards is expected.

3.

oooww boy, i can’t take adriano’s style anymore.. dunno, the man is consistent for sure and surfs very sharp but it’s about time to improve his leg stance or the people will get bored.

4.

Adriano is such a nice guy, a great surfer, but goddam I hate him and his country.

5.

Adriano? Yes, dont car for his style, but you guys need to start using some arguments. Owen has wide stance as well, so as many guys on the tour (Gudauskas it even obscene).
Style for style, JJF is one of the best surfers today, still he has a terrible all around style. He goes beyond ugly, because his arms are also unstylish. What about Kerr? Airs and tubes, anything else just sucks. Sucks bad. My ten years old brother has a more solid power surfing than he has.

C’mon. You can do better. Use arguments. Hate for hate is just disgusting and childish.

Mick and Joel for the final!

4.

adriano was over-scored with his one floater waves… look at the re-play.
i like brazilians by the way and was rooting for gabriel medina.. but seriously, adriano is getting way OVERSCORED in his front-side floats… those look HIDEOUS.

hopefully Kerr can knock him out. We are all rooting for Adriano’s demise from this contest especially from last year’s catastrophe.

So, pretty decent waves, ahn? And in Rio! Go figure! Go Adriano!

7.

re:yew -> mick and joel are on the same side of the draw

8.

only 2 brazzos left !!!! i doubt there will be any left by the semis. hopefully kerr can win his first title (unless ADS throws a mind boggling fs floater on 3 ft wave)

I’d say that has some pretty decent power surfing in it, at the very least enough to blow your little brother outta the water.
And while I’m here I’ll just go on to say every single post of yours I’ve read has been completely uneducated crap, opinion is one thing but the amount of just plain ridiculous statements that you’ve made has lead me to the opinion you must either be: a) a 15 year with a mild grasp on grammar who took up surfing 6months ago and now believes he is an expert or b) a pretentious fuck-knuckle trying to stand out from the pack. Just because you have an opinion, doesn’t make it valid, doesn’t make it better than anyone else’s, and doesn’t mean I should have to deal with wanting to punch me computer screen in rage at reading your stupidity .

Why some rates so much adriano and especially Brasil? I don`t really understand. Brasil is awesome!!!

Well, I was married to a heavy smkeor for years. Nobody can make a person quit. They need encouragement, and the desire to stop. Money is a big factor these days if one doesn’t care about their health.. You could suggest that Dad try joining a group who are trying to quit.. Nagging only makes it worse.. Now and then encouragement and expressing your worries about his health could help.. My now ex stopped when a neighbor whose wife got pregnant and he had promised to quit when she did, asked my then spouse if he wanted to make it a competition.. They both won the contest.. Both stopped! So, that’s another type of way to give it a good try Maybe even have a little money pool among his friends if they are smkeors and want to quit. Not alot of money just a few as prize to the winner to devided if more than one winner.. Maybe you could handle it.. Smoking is one of the strongest addictions from what I’ve been told.. Good Luck to you, and your dad..

wow, rio looks like d’bah!

15.

Where is that dude that said conditions would be bad? Must be eating his own words.
I hope the star wars bear wins it (Alejo).
And joel turpel is funny saying “barra da tijuca” and “mineirinho”.
Someone said his voice is annoying? Well, just slightly.

    16.

You won’t call that good conditions! We’re supposed to watch the dream tour, and it’s n average Hossegor! Come on, it will be like NYC, two hours of average surf and you’ll call a miracle. Rio sucks, send this comp at Fernando de Noronha, for instance, where conditions are great quite every year, but two close out barrels won’t change the ugly face of a bad spot.

17.

I have to mute the commentary every time joey turpel comes on…..sounds like a hippy version of ben stein, monotone mofucka.

18.

JJF has terrible style??? Hahaha. Me myself and I you have no clue

19.

Oh, yes. Im a child. Just started to surf and while in the subject, Kerr has an awesome power surfing (a mix of Occy/Curren); JJF’s arms is not ridiculous at all, Owen does not have a stinky bug stance and Ace is not a “3 to the beach” surfer.
Uneducated is to criticize the author instead of the idea. Grow up, you childish little fucker.

20.

JJF, with his tyerrible style, won in Rio. The wave is ugly, but the kid is really good. Since the beginning of this year, I’m sure JJF is the next world champ. Medina needs to work, and seems a bit under pressure nowadys. JJF looks way more relax, and it pays.
JJF is good.

21.

Me, Myself and I is an idiot.

22.

Response to #11: John hicks, if that’s your real name, why do you hate Brasil? It’s something factual or ideological? I’m I taking you too seriously?

23.

what do you mean? u’re all idiots, i though this was common knowledge.

24.

what is common knowledge? Your mamma? Thought your mamma was common pussy.

25.

Jeremy Flores scored 5.97 in two waves ! France is a great surf country if he is the best of them ))

26.

Tiago makes the quarter-finals eliminating Stab’s dear Owen Wright, goes to win R4 in and still NOT A SINGLE WORD in your reports…

SHAME on such bias reporting, you are not fit to be journalists of any kind!!!

    27.

reporting tiago’s win would be like reporting kolohe andino’s win over laurie towner last year at pipe when laurie got injured going mad. while kolohe shoulder hopped with his eyes closed

28.

It’s funny how the cammera man absolutely doubt Parko barreling skills! lol

    29.

Soooo: Owen Wright was injured after going mad? And several waves in the 9 pt range don’t even deserve a mention, even Tiago’s 9,07 in R1 (2nd only to Julian’s 9,27!)?

Several guys got mentioned with heat totals of less than 10! You’re right, somebody has an injury, a mental one!!!!

30.

hey who,s up for a 8ball or 2 or 3 or 4 or
