KS wins Fiji!
Posted 11 Jun 2012, by STABmagKelly Slater has taken down Gabriel Medina in the final of the Volcom Fiji Pro at Cloudbreak. KS only caught two waves in the final after a wild semi final against CJ Hobgood where he bagged a 10 and a 9.5. Full report coming soon.
That 8.33 from Kelly was way overscored and changed the dynamic of the heat. There were only three waves on the heat, Kelly did well to be on the best of them and Medina didn´t have a chance.
That being said, Medina is soon to be the best surfer in this world (Kelly is from another planet).
Medina clearly proved himself, and Kolohe threw himself into deserved scrutiny for a) ruining the vibe of a great event with tantrum and socking his board to pieces, and b) fleeing the event before the big stuff arrived. People will argue he is young…so are JJ and Medina. What he IS is an over hyped, immature kid with way too much pressure on him, and a lot of work to do on his overall game. Over matched on a rail, in the barrel, and in big surf, he is proving he doesn’t belong at this level yet. Volcom got mad pub from this, so next year they better not bitch about cost and pull the plug on what will surely be the standout event on Tour this year, unless Teahpoo delivers something we haven’t seen yet. Wake up Big 3 clothing companies! If you can’t sponsor tour events, then the ASP needs to get companies that can. Add a second event in Hawaii, and one in Indo.
does anyone know how to get in touch with Dave Stansfield’s people? i’m needing someone to open up for a comedy act i’ve got going on at a local retirement home here this tuesday evening. if you could have his people call my people, that would be great. we just need someone to kinda bore the audience, so that way the final act really knocks ‘em dead.
The contest went well.. lots of high scores.. etc.
The only discrepancies I might find was how owen was scored. If you were to review his heat, I am unclear on why he received the scores that he did. I am not a bitter Aussie, but I watched each heat very closely. Also, cj’s scores against ads… again, I am no fan of ads, but cj was given some high marks. And lastly, the final, I am unclear on how exactly kelly earned a 8.33 or something of 8 points for that ride. Again, I was pulling for slater, but he never was barreled yet given high marks.
The call was awful and the webcast has lots of errors in it. The commentators weren’t great either and focused on self-celebration.
I was stoked on this contest and I think most people would say that this is the first event of the year for the ASP or one that actually had waves to surf in. Not to say Bells wasn’t working, but all in all it worked out.
Skaters first wave was not over scored. It gave a baseline for the heat. Study the fades, the bottom turns, the vertical snaps, the whole ride. No one else was drawing those lines. I’m not a ks fan but facts are facts. He laid down the law this time.
crazy comp, thanks asp and volcom. really. And kelly is still the best in reef break waves.
kelly is still the best.
Masterful use of quiver, masterful reading of the wave, the only surfer to relax, fade, and get vertical on almost every ride. The most technical barrels. It actually looked like a pro surfing against amateurs by the final day. It must be so painful to be a pro and just get spanked year after year. I’m pretty tired of watching one man dominate the entire sport so I can’t imagine the frustration the would be champs must feel. Whole careers left as footnotes in the shadows
Great to see Medina rise to form again. Too bad Koho will be rookie of the year.
There is not a snowballs chance in hell that Blowlohe will get rookie of the year, and if he does its because the Socal surf Industry is doing some serious knee time for their hometown guy. He can’t make it out of a heat, and so far all the other ‘rookies’ are showing as much as he is at the very least. If he wins, its a rigged deck, and that shot needs to be called out NOW, if he doesn’t figure it out the second half. He deserves no accolades for what he is showing.
Nice use of a Quad Kelly. I think that helped with some of those crazy down the line speed turns. DAMN GOOD SURFING… No other way about it. Fanning was killing it, Medina killed it, CJ killed it. Thanks Volcom for a great way to waste a sunday. ( and the entire week before )
After Navarro, Walsh and Mcintosh, then, maybe, comes KS.
who´s gonna deny Medina this time? I bet someone will make shit up just cause is brazilian…
That 8.something for Kelly on the first wave of the finals made no sense at all. That said… the best surfer of the tournament won the title, and that’s always a good thing.

Anyone remember Jason Buttonshaw???

Kelly deserved it, even if he’d only gotten an ’8′, or high 7, there were no more comparable waves that even came through for Medina to catch..you clowns are like guys that hate the best, and want an underdog to win. They were judging turns more today…had been ALL day, and the first few days they weren’t. There is no controversy here, so stop looking for it.
not really, we see what actually happened and post a comment on it. stop being delusional and THINK for yourself.
don’t know how all you guys watched it the coverage I saw was frozen on the @nd Semi CJ and KS and then the Final ???? or was that just me … Confussed
garbage webcast,its volcom, not quiksilver.
Even if they scored Kelly a 4 on that first wave he still would have won. Not even an issues worth bringing up.
Wassel and Grey catch the biggest waves…. together. i love Alex, one of the best ever from Cali…

so Luke and Joel aren’t an item anymore this year eh? how sad… two once proud aussies having to separate their wardrobe
Bruce? rehab? what? where was Bruce?
Righto. Mr Taffy here.
I think you guys are forgetting how much the Volcom website stinks and how much bad publicity and frustration Volcom bought forth with their stub standard quality webcast.
ASP the people demand one webcast provider that can bring a consistent good quality feed to the public.
He’s hanging with Koby…picture starting to make sense?
lighten up people, its surfing. surfing. “the webcast sucked….. they should have ran it on the big day….kelly got overscored on that one wave…..kolohe this kolohe that…” you guys sound like a bunch of girls. just fucking watch
Yeah, even if the first wave of Slater is overscored, he stills win the thing. The same thing for the only decent wave of Fanning at the end of his semi. Medina did a small barrel, two turns and tried an aerial, and got a 5.5, but then Fanning made two standard turns, then fell, and got a 5…It was like the judges wanted him to have enough points to be able to come back with a single wave, a la CJ Hobgood…Didn’t happened, though…
Yes, webcast sucks enough to spoil the last semi and the final, I counldn’t watch it, two much lags and stuff…

Where is stupid Tiago now? Any comments?
Tiago is out filming Zoltan Torkos in the channel, waiting for a coral kick-flip.
i know bob hurley, is a class act, but hes got to seperate himself from who ever was in charge of the web cast, it was like something from 10 years ago,not bob’s style at all. please someone help him get volcoms web casts organized,so much i didnt get to see.
Bob Hurley had nothing to do with this event. Wrong clothing company.
chris cote can suck my dick
by the sound of chris’s voice.. he goes the other way, catcher not a pitcher.
Get rid of the ‘Industry Insiders”, whom not only are hyperbolic butt kissers, but have no credibility either. Its embarrassing to listen to Cote, or that guy GT at the Billabong events.
Let me say one more thing, I AM BRAZILIAN, and i HATE Adriano, and I don´t even know why, besides his terrible style, there´s something else that makes him hard to like
Did anyone else notice the shot of the bar when Slater won, and everyone cheered EXCEPT Adriano, who sat there looking bitter!?? That was classless, and weak. You don’t have to jump up and down, but don’t be a little bitch. Ariano and Kolohe’s attitudes the only bruises on the comp.
The ASP should put Lewis Samuels and Derek Hynd in the commentators box and let them speak /trash talk the truth…or make that a commentators vault: Locked down like a bank, so that no one can break in and slap em around. It would be a welcome change from all the ball-licking these commentators are guilty of at these contests.
That would be AWESOME! Of course they would never allow it because the Industry would be scared to death what would come out. Bad enough Christian Fletcher was wearing his “Do you swallow?” shirt at the Lowers QS. I’m sure all of San Clemente was going “Not us!!! Its a Nike event!”
It is the first time ever I don´t read anythig negative about Medina after a contest. Adriano was just living the pain of defeat. You have to live the pain to get rid of it.Michael Jordan says it: ‘Live the pain of defeat, don´t deny it. After that, get rid of it”,
Nobody dislikes Adriano cos he’s Brazilian, they dislike him cos hes clearly a prick.Even the rest of the 44 think so. From ASL: “I’m number four in the world,” Adriano hissed back, paddling to the inside once again.
surfinglife.com.au/worldtour/home/48-asl-world-tour-blog/6945-kelly-slater-wins-volcom-fiji-pro
The bigger the ass you are, the more people love when you get beat. The only way an a-hole like Adriano can get over is to win, which he doesn’t. When you are a prick, and hassle CJ (popular guy who rips), and then he comes back and smokes you like a cheap cigar in the next heat, you deserve to stew. Surf better, not be a bigger tool.
TIME for a new coach: Kolohe threw himself into deserved scrutiny for a) ruining the vibe of a great event with tantrum and socking his board to pieces, and b) fleeing the event before the big stuff arrived. People will argue he is young…so are JJ and Medina. What he IS is an over hyped, immature kid with way too much pressure on him, and a lot of work to do on his overall game. True True… I WOULD HOPE … that it might be a teachable moment between Parsons and Kolohe about surfing Cloudbreak, but it was not to be.. Snips could have encouraged him and showed him the ropes, etc…
Coach made a bad decision. Especially considering Tahiti is next. Kolohe could have gotten some good coaching and built confidence.
That goodness the winds died down and the contest was able to continue.
STAB you lazy bastards where’s the Full Story? Im salivating over your witty insight not KS’s victory so bring it on!
dc you are such a massive tool. Giving it the biggun on net forums like you know something. Just fuck off.
Thank you Marcelo, for acknowledging Adriano’s “terrible style”… and Aussies should thank Owen for realizing himself that he surfed terribly flat off the bottom in the past, and doing something about it himself this year… and thanks Gabriel for making tri-fins look like the joke that they are, when you got a beautiful tube and then took a dump on the shoulder with the flattest, most ridiculous grab-rail non-cut back ever from a guy not lacking in style… and, NO thanks to Kelly for possibly making tri-fins look ridiculous, because tri-fin surfers will just keep telling themselves that he could have won on a barn door, whereas it took three fins for Simon to storm to victories at Bells and the Coke (which he hadn’t done on a single fin since… well, since the year before). The conservative kookass is wagging the surfing dog these days, instead of things eminating from the brain… and the eyes are shut.
