No, not an exit from this tube, but an exit from the event. Which, in itself, is an odd thing. Rarely, so rarely, does Kelly Slater not make it to the business end of an event. Especially at a place like Chopes, and especially when he won the event here last year. But this morning in round three, after eight consecutive lay days, Ricardo Dos Santos clocked 18.34 to Kelly’s 16.44, and that was that. Posting a nine and a seven then not making it through your heat is a real tough pill to swallow, but, the thing that makes Kelly so great? After all this time, after all he’s proven, Kelly still despises losing.
