When I first read about Julian winning I was elated, but after watching the heat recap I’m kind of disappointed and I have to say, like many others here, that Medina should have won. His best two waves were better than Jules — straight up. Still stoked for Julian’s win though, just because I’m a fan of his surfing. Gabriel was emotional losing and that’s too bad, but clearly he’s young and takes competition very seriously.

The semis were way over scored too, what a joke of a contest. And I don’t really rate Doherty as a commentator like others do.

Julian´s waves at the semi were way overscored too.

There is no conspiracy or other weird theory about what seems more like a fault than a mistake. Some judges are euros or brazilian, and Rip Curl is Medina’s sponsor. Looks like Wilson won thanks to his great semi-final, where he crushed De Souza with the highest heat total of the contest. It creates a momentum for the judges, they took too much time to judge, taking into account the whole surfer and event instead of just the waves actually ridden. Add Wilson’s extraordinary ability to score buzzer beater waves, he does that at least one time in each contest he’s in. The formula is quite simple: if he is behind near the end of the heat, he just wait for the last minute or so, take a wave and claim it vigorously. It usually works well, he is a smart guy. I’ll keep his semi final, forget the final and the show will go on, Medina is 18 and will many more contests, I guess.

Yes, Julian was over scored/medina was underscored. Once again, the ASP judges failed to maintain a consistent system based on established criteria (anyone remember Adriano’s 10pt floater). I don’t put much stock into who the ASP decides is the winner. I watch these because it allows me to watch some of the world’s best live, and I got to watch both Medina and Julian put on great displays of surfing throughout the event. Medina just won a large chunk of cash. I can understand the feeling of being robbed a win, but you get paid to surf, win or lose. I am so sick of all this stupid nationalist debate that goes on every time a Brazilian wins or loses, from both Brazilians and non-Brazilians alike. Its a surf contest with bad judging and guys who get paid to rip (and they do). I used to feel proud to be a part of a sport that wasn’t based on where you lived, but how you surfed. We are becoming just like every other sport where people come to hate each other as a way of supporting the athletes that are supposed to be representative of them. It is ridiculous.

Hard pill to swallow for Medina. Heat was close, have watched it over and over again, but I’m no judge. The judges who sit there all day scrutinising and analysing the surfing know best, and I’m sure they didn’t take the decision lightly. The panel is made of judges from different nations so they can attempt to be as impartial as possible in a subjective sport. As an Aussie I’m stoked Julian won – he’s been hungry for a win all year and his surfing and drive is improving with each event. I can understand that Medina would be disappointed, but to not shake his fellow competitor’s hand; to walk off stage; shows why there exists a negative vibe and somewhat of a hatred between Caucasian and Brazilian surfers. I’m stoked for both the boys, it’s a learning curve that they’ll both benefit from – elation and drive for Julian, how to be a good sport for Medina (even if he thinks he’s been ‘robbed’).

Thinking about it, the judges probably locked in a score of about a 6 for Julians last wave. Then, someone in the higher echelons of the ASP had a phone call from a Nike representative offering something that swayed their decision.
Ultimately, Julian won on paper and overall.

the judges got it right. julian’s score was based on the fact that it was easily a point better than medina’s 7.47 barrel. late drop, bust out, and three turns tops a head dip runner any day. medina’s 7.9 could have been scored higher, but, personally, I thought that air reverse and following turns were a bit flicky (obviously, so did the judges). his 6.77 air revo was fucking mean though! had he stomped a turn after that air, this would be a different story no doubt…

If you truly have a passion for something be it a sport, a career, a hobby etc, and you have it taken away from you unjustly, this hurts. Was he overscored? Probably. But our sport is and always will be subjective. We do not have nets, posts or painted lines. What I saw was two very talented surfers making the most of some pretty average conditions.

Gabriel will bounce back, and probably learn more from the experience of what happened post-heat than he did from what happened in the water. There will have to be more than some questionable judging from a heat or two for this kid not to win a world title one day.

Pretty much everyone agrees Medina was worked over by the judges. the question is: will it be acknowledged by the ASP? Richie Porta had time to get on STAB, and defend the lay days, saying “People want to get barreled, not ride end sections”, but then goes out and messes up the judging on said barrels the very next day! This wasn’t a close call, it was so bad it deserves at least a comment by the head judge. But, this is pro surfing, and no one outside of a STAB message board will ask the hard question publicly, so they don’t ruffle the bro bro clubs feathers. Where the F is Bobby Martinez when you need him for a sound bite? There are some heavy hitters commenting on here (allegedly), all saying it was highway robbery. We may soon realize that Slater has been actually dragging the half dead carcass of pro surfing with him, and he may have saved it by having his ‘rebel tour’ agenda realized before his departure.

Everyone saying it was stole just watch the heat analyzer. The judges had already given Julian a 7.83 for just a short tube and chandelier exit at the beginning of the heat. That final wave he caught was just shy of the same tube ride but then he rode it all the way to the beach with THREE turns. They HAD to give a higher score and they only gave him .70 higher to make it a 8.43 …..

Doherty is a great writer, but quite possibly worse than GT behind the mic, and that is saying something. Some guys do everything just short of actually sucking on the crank while on camera, they are so brown nosing. Doherty is both hyper critical in a know it all way, and rectal nosed at the same time…quite a feat. Is there any chance of getting this site moderated a little? I honestly think it’d be really beneficial to the site to have only registered users able to post comments on stories, maybe even opening up a forums section?
Almost every story posted here turns into a 14 year old schoolyard he-said-she-said fight within the first 10 comments between people anonymously posting, whinging and bitching between themselves.
I’m sure it wouldn’t eliminate the problem entirely, but at least it might encourage a bit more actual discussion between people, and weed out some of the trolls inbetween.

Let’s get this all into perspective the best comp surfers in the world take surfing to the highest limits and are always pushing the boundaries of what is possible on a surfboard. While doing that the surfing public ‘U” puts the surfer in such high regard that a company sees an opportunity to profiteer from the surfers talents. Company ‘C’ gives the surfer ‘S’ money so ‘S’ can push the boundaries in surfing by surfing fulltime and ‘C’ can sell product through ‘S’s’ profile and make money. Then a bunch of non-gender specific, multi-culturally diverse group of well doers see an opportunity to make money from both ‘S’ and ‘C’. Hey presto a governing body ‘N’ is born. ‘N’ creates a World Championship Tour so all of the ‘S’s’ and ‘C’s’ from around the world can compete together to see who is the best surfer/company in the world. ‘C’ then approaches coastal communities ‘T’ around the world and promises that they will profit from their event being held in their ‘T’. Hang in there kid’s I’m getting there.
Ok JW’s last wave was scored too high, and yes GM acted in a way that would be called bad sportsmanship on any playing field. But in the wash up the ASP will say the judges did the right thing. They made judgment based on criteria and the prevailing conditions. And so the show rolls on and the entertainment continues. So If you want to keep all the ‘C’,’U’,’N’ & ‘T’s’ happy go out and buy a new, wettie, board, shirt, shorts, mag etc. My local is 3ft onshore slop and mostly closing out at the moment but I’m still going, because I could get a couple good ones stoked!

In a WCT event, it can be refreshing to look at the event as a whole and the surfing that went down. Medina surfed like a champ the whole way -including the finals. BUT, if you look at Julian and his surfing throughout all the rounds, its undeniable that he surfed the best comp out of everyone. From his 10pt barrel, to the most dominating semi-final heat ever seen at Peniche, Julian really deserved the title EVEN if there was controversy over a +/- 0.5 difference in scores. The real issue with ASP judging actually comes around PARKO…. look at his heat against Jordy Smith at Trestles, where Barton Lynch almost got fired for calling Jordy 50x better than Parko, more critical and all rounded. Parkinson has been over scored for many events and instead of hopping on Julian and Gabriel (who beat him in France last year) look at the unjustifiably high scores that Parko is receiving. Don’t hate on Julian cause his girlfriend is hotter than yours….

Biased heat evaluation, Medina won it, but Porta geve it to Julian, sad times to ASP.

that was a poor professionalism from ASP showing lack of competence to menage that heat situation. At the end of the heat they were not able to realize that they were over- scoring Julian since the beginning of the heat with that 7 something for a foam tube, comparing with Medina’s waves. They showed that they were not able to handle that situation when they presented that final score to Julian.

Medina’s naive behavior is something else to be discussed, the Kid is passionate and is going to grow with that since it was a tough one to handle. He was the in-form surfer of the event with and won that heat clearly, because now we have heat analyzer and can compare.

I WAS AT THE EVENT. I WATCHED IT LIVE YOU MORON. I saw all the antics live with my own eyes and I saw the final rides with my own eyes standing on the beach and you watch replays from different angles and some make a ride look a lot better than it actually was if you were sitting there watching it happen in real time.

There was no bad judgeing and Medina’s old tired airrev’s are just as boring now as floaters. It was a Tube Riding contest and julian got two tubes in the final and both were completely covered tubes. Gabriel got one tube and you could see half his board sticking out the whole time. Go watch your replays and judge from those different camera angles then complain if you want.

If you were standing there on the beach watching with the rest of us you wouldn’t even be complaining about the decision at the final. Everyone that likes Gabriel is saying FOULPLAY and everyone that likes Julian is saying HE WON.

I could have cared less which of them won and I think the final from the judges point of view of the waves and the spectators view were dead on scores. Go watch the Canary Island event tomorrow and lay this seal to rest. ASP isn’t going to change the decision no matter how much the Brazilian’s or Gabriel fanboi’s cry about it.

I will make a commentary now and this is just my opinion. I live at Wind n Sea, La Jolla, CA. I surf for fun. I work my ass off to pay my rent and get to surf on weekends and if it gets big my boss knows I won’t show up for work. But I work to pay my bills and live and work to surf.

These guys on the ASP WTC tour make more money even if they LOSE than I make in a year sometimes, for surfing epic waves for 10 days. What the hell do they have to cry about?

Let´s put this way, pure and simple.
On the first exchange JW´s wave could NEVER be a 7.83, that was a manufactured bad barrel with a dirty exit, a 6.5 maximum, no more.
Once we realize this, we don´t even have to discuss the second JW´s ridiculous 8.43, wich was way over scored, Medina´s 2 waves were simply better than JW´s, both.
Medina won by a clear mile.
Now think about Kelly doing what Medina did on his first wave…, a huge air reverse as a first maneuver followed by a clear snap on the face and a well done slash on the face….
Oh man, If Kelly does a combo like that he gets a 9, no doubts, immediately, “ the guy is 40 years age,11 times world chap, adapted his game to the new generation…bla bla bla”, 9.

Julian did not need a win like this, he´ll win CT events for sure, this one he did not deserve.

Lots of kooks on here. Lots of dim bulbs. The audience that points out the crying and emotions are misguided. These people are quick to point out weaknesses. Realize different cultures and people react differently. Its not an excuse, but just something that happens. As you go through life and work with others, this will become more clear. Some never move to any region outside of your comfort zone – move out of their city, try a new job, get rejected..etc for fear of remaining “safe”. The bubble wrap life. At the contest, we saw different reactions and some could have been avoided so this is not a defense of G Medina. It was an honest moment, yet some just criticize based on what you know and believe. You act as though everyone sholuld be held to a perfect standard. The people that are making this critique may never put themselves out to the world to see or if god forbid, they do, will they be mocked? Are we not all allowed to be human? Is there some sort of limit to the controversy? Hiding your emotions isn’t necessarily a strength. So what happens when an event happens in your life that affects you, how will you control yourself? Should you always be composed. Should you not? The be-rating and name-calling is simply unacceptable. Being overly emotional isn’t necessarily a strength either. There was talk of 18 year olds not crying at war. That is a terrible, terrible analogy. The forming process of those young men is much different as are the circumstances they endure. ROBERTO must be 10 years old. Most retarded remarks I have read online in years. All the others in this debate have interests in either Julian or Gabriel and chose a side. In the end the judges had a difficult decision and it was a tube riding contest and JW got two in the final and the judges always love (like all of us do) when someone pulls a buzzer beater tube at a place like Supertubos or pipeline etc. In the end it doesn’t really matter whether julian or gabriel won that heat. The Buzz started by gabriel crying and all the controversy that has followed has showed the ASP that there are surf fans out here watching and we care about the sport.

Gabriel will be world champion some day there is no disputing that, the kid has that something special that it takes to become a world champ, he cares and is passionate about what he does.

Julian is a great surfer too and will become the world champ in his lifetime also, these are things we all know will come to pass.

There is no reason to continue arguing over the decision at the ripcurl pro, that’s in the past.

What this decision did accomplish is bring awareness to the ASP, surfers, and the surfing community that we all care about the sport and want the competitions to be fair and based on corporations, products or advertising. We all want the same thing. Unbiased professional Surfing competitions where standards are set and adhered to.

So maybe this wasn’t such a bad thing after all. Some good could come from this.

The main difference is that Julian just took off and punched through…and Medina did a number of maneuvers on the face of the wave.

In other words, Medina “surfed” the wave vs. “stall and punch.” I think most of us on here can stall… maybe not punch, but get the essential positioning needed to do what Julian did. On the other hand, the skill to hit a rotator..the big hit, and the tail slide is much different.

Not to go into this any further… the case is really: an emphasis on “actual surfing” or “contest ruled surfing based on criteria (getting tube time)… I think this really discredits the sport and doesn’t legitimize who the better “surfer” is… shouldn’t the best “surfer” win?

Hey, the judges were giving scores to deep tubes all event, regardless if it was a punch- out or a clean exit. Gabe’s tube in the final wasn’t that deep.
