Interest in Quiksilver Pro G-Land 2011 confirmed
World tour goofy foots will be rejoicing at news Quiksilver is looking to bring the world tour back to one of the world’s greatest lefts in 2011. The ASP confirmed to Stab, Quiksilver had sent a scout team to G-Land to look at the possibility of holding an event there.
Rod Brooks from Quiksilver International said Quiksilver were interested in holding an event there next year but “it is still a work in progress.”
“Quiksilver is still discussing with the local government department and we are engaged in discussions with sponsorship partners who are yet to be confirmed."
Rod says they’d hoped to make an announcement at the ASP board meeting in Huntington next week but will need more time. Quik are also searching for partners to help with the cost incurred in holding an event in the at-times volatile, politically and tectonically, region.
It will be the second time Quiksilver have tried to shift surfing back to G-Land. Civil unrest forced the cancellation of the event in 1998 and again in 2001 after the Bali bombings.
“They were both expensive non events,” says Rod.
With the removal of Mundaka from the tour stops this year, Tahiti is the sole genuine left remaining on tour. One surfer who will be ecstatic to hear news a second genuine left is looking to be added to the tour schedule for 2011 is Bobby Martinez.
“it’s funny how the asp has only 1 event that is a left! what the fuk is up with that! get ur shit 2gether asp! thats bullshit,” the Californian tweeted last week. – Jed Smith
