Letter to the Tahitian surfers

Dahui Letter

March 14, 2009

ATTENTION: To all of the Tahitian surfers of the Tahitian Surfing Federation and all it may concern:

We are very curious as to why you have a “Trials” that allows only one (1) surfer to advance into the main event. You should be allowed sixteen (16) just like here in Hawai’i.  There are RULES to this effect. Who would let Billabong and the ASP come into their country and dictate to them that only one (1) surfer will come out of the trials?

What country and what people would bend over to Billabong to let them dictate that no one else can have an event or venue in their own land, and not even allow the native Tahitians to have a contest at Teahupoo?

Understand this, Billabong and the ASP need Tahiti. Tahiti does NOT need Billabong or the ASP. Be warned, these are not nice people. Instead, they are money-hungry pig idiots who will take advantage of your hospitality and Aloha. Imagine how happy they are? These little dweebs are dictating how it’s going to be, in YOUR home. We would really like to know who is responsible to let this happen.

The reason the ASP surfers don’t want Tahitian surfers coming out of the trials is because they don’t want to get beaten by them, as it’s been proven. The ASP has this smoke screen of saying that they are the best surfers in the world and are using their politics to screw you every year. Did you also notice that Tahiti is the only place in the world that allows the ASP to bring in their own Water Patrol and Security?

Tell us you don’t see the Tahitian surfers surf Teahupoo, or anyplace else in the world for that matter; as good as anyone in the Top 44? Unfortunately, they don’t get the money to travel and their country doesn’t support them. Plus to qualify for the CT, you have to surf junk little waves all over the world, which is bullcrap. When some of these CT surfers hear they are going to Tahiti, they start hoping Teahupoo is going to be small when they get there . Imagine what would happen if there were sixteen (16) or more Tahitian and Hawaiians in that contest? What do you think would happen?

We say the remedy for this is for the ASP, Billabong; or whatever contract was made or whomever they paid off, should stop - tough shit. The rules have just changed. Should they try to pull their will fix it next year crap tell them “NO”. NOW IS THE TIME .

All Polynesians should be allowed to have their talent shine and not have it blemished by foreigners. Its time to stick out your chests, not your asses.
We’ve been through this time after time and should be proud of who we are and not be taken advantage of.

Parahi and Aloha,

The Founders of the Hui O He’e Nalu

To reply #31 and everybody else who doesnt understand that surfing was not created to make money. Surfing is an ancient polynesian tradition based on the land and sea, not a professional money making land taking sport. All boards were handmade not sold at the store and branded. Beaches were open to surf, some beaches were private for royalty, not so coporations could make money. Yes competitions help communities financially because of the increase in tourism during events but at the same time the culture is not perpetuated through the sport. Im pretty sure that over half the surfers in the world have never seen a koa board or any board 14' or longer in their life muchless shaped a regular board like traditional polynesians used to.

Cape Hatteras, North Carolina,USA has been the location for the East Coast Contest for 40 years. On a National Park for that matter. Locals don't want it, but that has no bearing. Now the Mega Surf Companies have taken it over and turned it into Surfing Babylon. For over 2 weeks 1000+ aggressive surfers dictate our island. And there is FUCKING nothing we can do about it.

contests cause the problem. i have no idea what its like in tahiti, but pipe is across the street from the elem. school. this is not like an stadium or golf course. People who live in the area are not stoked by these sportsmen and businessmen coming in and having big events. I think all contests should be held in private arenas like Hawaiian waters park.

sad to think the sport of surfing lets a pathetic group of people like da hui dictate their sport. even more pathetic that the pipe contest has even succumbed to da hui's illogical complaints. when golf has the masters, you don't see 16 wild card spots for the locals, why? -- you earn a spot in the masters by qualifying -- same should go for surfing.

the sad thing is, like a guy pointed out up there, eddie isn't even from hawaii.

even sader, none of them can surf -- none of them at all. it doesn't take rocket science to surf pipeline -- especially to do a bug squat like kala or makua.

buenos noches.

It would be a treat if Stab Mag interviewed this guy for an upcoming print edition. Plus, take over a hot young Aussie like Owen Wright to go head to head with him at pipe.

Surely Da Hui have read this Blog by now as #42 suggested. If they're iced up enough to make this genius video, they should be up to some hard hittin' probes from Chas Smith or the hilarious Derek R.

A fair go for local surfers to access the main event? For sure, I agree.
Ct surfers may hate it and the ASP will hate it but hey! theyre the ones who wanted Palm trees, a tan and beautiful fucking sunsets right?
The message wouldve been better recieved if a nice peachy Hawaiian bunny in a teeny weenie Brazilian bikini delivered it,cause the chick theyve used in this video as you can see for yourself, has a head like a smashed crab.. and even though shes shaved her legs, those tits are fake and shes talks funny.

Re: #36/#42 - fair points, maybe I was as angry as this Hui man that day. And I'm not annoyed that you dominate the line-up (I'm really not, please please believe me).

Back to the debate, I've just checked Da Hui's website (http://www.dahui.com/) and this video is on the home page titled as "Surf Politics" - along with some other pretty damn macho stuff including a hilarious picture from their ad campaign which has a bunch of 'em holding guns in front of some kinda war chopper. This shit gets funnier.

Letter to the Da Hui
Reply #42 on : Thu April 23, 2009, 09:32:06
Another thing that amuses me to think about...

I picture the Da Hui huddled around eddie rothman, who as one of you have mentioned was born in Philly, raised in Cali, and kicked to Hawaii, and they're all huddled there around eddie's computer reading these farkin awsome comments and cursing the shit outta everyone else but themselves.
Now, granted we're only a hand full of enlightened Stab bloggers, I'd reckon these Hawaiians feel pretty fucking stupid, considering there isn't one positive comment about their whiney little letter. and the way we feel about them is the way everyone feels about them.
So Da Hui, if you're reading these comments.. hopefully you realized that you've entered the realm of the internet, where your machoman beatdowns can't intimidate us bloggers, and we're going to be telling you like it is.

Suck on that fat dick you tough guys

i think he wants to make surfing more accessible for indigenous locals - it's a confused point but i think that's what he means. sounds fair enough to me.

i personally don't roll with tough guy posturing, some of which is happening in these responses.

but i do like robust, informed debate - which i'd like to see come as a result of this story.

bring it on stabaroonies!

What da poi?
This guy needs to take a lesson from Brian, Buffalo and Momee in the meaning of Aloha - and the importance of getting an education. So he wants to turn Tahiti into a place of meth addict paranoid roid pumpers too stupid to go to school and too proud to care. These guys are at about the same level as neanderthal southern KKK rednecks or UK skinheads. Calling themselves da hui is a joke - since when did the definition of 'brotherhood' change to 'thug'?

Re Anonymous#36 comment "...fucked our sport...overexposure to the masses". Watchu mean it's "fucked"? Give us your 10-point explanation sucker. And brush up on the basics of the market economy before you bore us with an undergraduate wank-fest on "corporations".

Are you one of those fools that likes to "dominate" and "get heavy" in a crowded line-up of beginners rather than putting yourself in more remote and heavier conditions (where by the way you can quite easily get away from "the masses" you appear to despise)?

Well shaka to you homie, just keep rippin' it up like you tell your girlfriend and work colleagues.

What an ass clown. This tool bag thinks he is so tough. You can almost expect this from young kids, but to see older punks trying to hang on to their youths is hilarious. I just watched one of the recent surf films about the Aussies and Shawn Thompson starting their rise in Hawaii back in the day. This big punk ass tool bag trying to act like he did not remember beating up those kids with a smirk on his face the whole time. This guy was an old crow still pumping roids into bloodstream wanting soooo bad to be 21 again was a freakin JOKE to watch. These clowns will die as miserable as they have been their whole lives, so forget about this elementary school grad.

I remember in the mid nineties DA Hui came to Bali and gave the Balinese surfers the gift of "Attitude"...made things tense in the lineups for lots of people.. it was fucked. Yet looking at Quiksilver having the rights to Snapper and Kirra at cyclone season for a MONTH AT PEAK SWELL TIMES!!! EVERY FUCKEN YEAR... for the next TWENTY YEARS!! What a ripoff, the fuckers have stolen the crown jewels of surfing for their spoilt little selves.

Eddie Rothman, the illiterate thug who formed Da Hui was born in inner-city Philadelphia and raised in Southern California until he was 13. At which point his parents realised he was a parasite and kicked him out of home. He then relocated to Hawaii to live with foster parents

Let's make one thing crystal fucking clear - Eddie Rothman does not have one strand of Hawaiian DNA in his decrepit leathery carcass.

Fucking hypocritical Haole blew in from Cali and acts like he owns the fucking joint.

This has to be a joke...

This letter, of course coming from the same failed business enterprise, Da Hui clothing...sounds like sour grapes to me.

Our company failed so fuck everyone.

First off, a lesson in business models: tragic designs notwithstanding, marketing a company to that mass public that is based on an organization of exclusivity and thug-behavior is a recipe for disaster. And, I didn't go to Oxford, but I'll wager a guess that beating the shit out of some poor kid wearing a Da Hui shirt isn't going to inspire retail sales. Remember British Knights? Of course you don't.

Back to the more important point, the ASP and its supporters (Billabong, Quiksilver, Rip Curl, Hurley, etc.) are trying to maintain and enhance a professional sport - a professional sport, I'll remind you, that is the base reason that anyone can make a living in the first place. You muppets in Hawaii aren't really seeing the whole point here.

It's not the Tahitians who have it wrong, it is the Hawaiians. Shame on you for forcing your way into a 16 wildcard event. It's pathetic and cowardly. You want you guys to surf on the ASP World Tour? Have them qualify like the rest of the world.

You are not special. You are not a unique and colorful snowflake...except maybe Makua...that child's intelligence rivals that of cream cheese. Kudos to you cocksucker.

Listen tools. He's clearly saying that Billabong does not allow any other contests in Tahiti. Not amatuer, not rival brands, nothing. Somehow Billabong has "bought" a monopoly over one of the best waves in the world. Which corrupt, ignorant Tahitian "official" signed this wave away? How much did he get? How much of this money did the community get? 16 wildcards aren't too many. If you think it is, do a split, half rest of the world, half Tahitian. Bruce, Dorian, Walshy, Machado, JamieO, Koby, Hipwood, Laurie Towner, Corey, etc etc... it's not as thought there's a lack of world wide talent for this wave. Shit, even Laird could smoke some fools. And he's OLD. Best surfers in the world at the best waves... why not make it so. The ASP is a joke!
