Like with any new hypebeasts, there are plenty who question whether he’s worthy of the buzz but, really, there’s no denying the kid’s speed, consistency and knack for on-wave combos. A great contest, that would be end even better with JJ and Medina in the finals, but hall made a god job. About Dane, he is the best free surfer in the world no doubt, but we are talking about competition, theres no world title for best surfer in surfvideos, there is the surfpool, so please keep this thoughts for the surfpool in december, Dane got smoked, twice! that’s is enough right?
JJ is a freak, and in my opinion he is the guy to beat in the next years, he does the job in Pipe, Fiji and Teahupoo, Gabriel still have to prove that he can surf as well in this conditions, what obvious he do not…
Anyways we are really excited to have all of you, surfers and fans here, a country that has not racism, prejudice or any king of persecution suffered by us in USA or Australia.

Too bad we didn’t have a JJF vs Medina final, it would have been much better. Nothing against Glenn Hall, but it was a bit like last year’s final in Santa Cruz, with Tiago Pires vs Miguel Pupo. And Hall was lucky, first against Flores, the french was robbed, first and only barrel of the comp, add turns, great wave, scored a 6 when Hall with an average wave had a 6.6…But then Flores acted stupid, lost nerves and eventually lost the heat. Then Hall was really lucky against JJF, two more minutes and he would have been sent to the airport…
But Medina was way above all this. I loved the way he showed Dane Reynolds what it means to surf brillantly. Reynolds didn’t need this, he is a really good surfer, but Reynolds’ fans needed to witness the difference between a winner and a dabbler.
It was the best moment of the contest, I wasn’t happy to see Reynolds losing, ’cause once again he is a hell of a surfer, but it was great to think of the face of those fans for sure…
I watched almost every heat up to when Simpson and Medina met in R16, I guess it was. Simpson surfed brilliantly with a perfect style, variety and linking every single turn. that’s what surfing is about, specially on a wave like trestles. It was a sad day for surfing when he didn’t take that heat.

fuck, what an awesome contest. was hoping for a jj vs medina final but waves were shite for jj’s semi and he got screwed. and how was kolohe on the mic announcing gab’s 9.8, could tell he was dying a lil on the inside. good to see dane with a singlet on too, and proving he’s still the best in the world. overall, mvp to dane and jj. medina’s combos were cray but he still has some major kinks to work out with his style.
give a break to the kid for christ, he’s only 18 years old. and he’s ripping god damn hard. ozzy sometimes does that “arm thing” several times too. nobody cares. off course the kid needs to improve style, but that will be gained throughout the years of experience.

I really liked watching this comp – Nike did a good job – and I bagged the shit out of Nike being a surf brand in the past. Good comentators on the whole – Julian should be banned from the booth however. Medina is awesome and will be world champ one day but he’s not my favourite surfer to watch. Occy showed the kids why style and power is still important so too did Micro and the Gudangs to a lesser extent. JJ and Medina look like future champs but only when Kelly decides he doesn’t care – and that may be in 5 minutes or 5 years.
Medina kills it. shreds. the kid can just loft in the air like i’ve never seen before. But, theres just something missing. He’s one speed – like Owen. he has so much flair, yet hes missing some. you know what I mean? Dane without a doubt is the best in the world. So spontaneous, like AI, and just has a real connection. Kelly, JJ, and Dance are on the next level.
Medina rips, but for some reason i still want to punch him in the face. that paddle battle he did with dane in the earlier rounds was a joke. quit claiming waves and i will like you much more Medina.

Agree Pepe, didn’t like to see Dane lose (still my best surfer), but Medina deserve this victory. Still get on my nerves but this kids gonna be HUGE!!!

Agreed onenorth I think he had that heat. I won’t be watching anymore Medina heats. No doubt he rips but he bores me to bits. Take off, air reverse, couple of turns that any good surfer can do, air reverse on the end section. No spontaneity. Double Johns got it right, he can do all the tricks but mixes it up and doesn’t look like a robot doing it. Plus he owns nearly everyone in the big stuff.

Medina future world champ for sure. He does the air thing and backs it up with flow. He ‘s won so many big contests and he’s only eighteen. It ‘s ridiculous.
Love and hate…. What a beautiful thing! For all of the nay sayers…. If Medinas winning formula is so boring and simple, why didn’t the other competitors just put on the same performance? Why didn’t they do the same moves(Superman, slob frontside grab, no grab 360…etc) consistently? Denial is a sad state….
For the purists I would like to suggest a replay of the no losers round and the heat vs Ace Buchan, the kid had more backhand flow than a beer tap during Oktoberfest!
And last but not least, if you think the style is ugly… beauty is what is in the inside not outside; just ask the judges(they gave him a 10)!
In 2 or 3 years will be more brazilians than australians on WT, so let´s excpect huge stuff from ADS, Medina and the boys from Brazil. Will be nice to see the haters crying like little girls then.

Except that Occy wasn´t bad doing airs – you´d better watch Beyond Blazing Boards. At that time ASP was not much fond of airs, and even Pottz had to quit them to win the tour. But Occy, Sunny, Gerr, e etc, could also do airs. – Medina ´s stance and style are not inspirational, nor are Owen´s, Wilko´s, Yadin´s and etc.

I just watched two of his hawaiian season highlight reels and he sh*ts on everyone in 2ft ehukai. however the biggest the kid gets to ride in both vids is 3-4ft pipe. Future world champ?

Pick yourself up mate. on that one our champ starts in R3, draws Travie, scores 12 something (his best wave a 6 something) and progresses to R4. the R4 is a no losers round, draws Bourez and Evan Valiere, totals 9, his best wave a 4. 3rd place and off to R5 where he draws Shane and wins with a 9 (his best wave a 4-something). Next up quarters, draws Kieran, scores an 8 and goes home.
I see flashes of brilliance in all those 4 point rides and 9 totals – what do you see?
Kelly is the best comp or no everyone knows that fuckbags gab and jj are knocking on his door but Dane hmm dunno seems he quit a bit soon before he proved how good he is you need to prove it he still could but beat Kelly consistently don’t think so maybe when kellys 45 to 50 ask mick fanning how hard it is cause he’s number 2
Lots of people would agree that they much prefer to see Dane shooting miniclips than doing the compses. I think there’s been a fair amount of good surfers embarking on the freesurfing wagon as of lately and while it is a bit sad to see them leave, the WT criteria is probably to blame to some extent.

I think is about time Aussies stop calling the Brazilians ‘wave hogging’ bunch. Whenever I go to Bali (or other surrounding Asian countries) I find Australians embarrassing the entire nation by showing no respect for the locals or anyone else, oh and ‘hogging’ the line up, seen quite a few neanderthal looking Aussies doing exactly that in G-Land recently. Perhaps the main reason Brazilians seen to bother Aussies so much is because they’re very alike in a lot of ways, kind of like looking in the mirror and not liking what you see and living in denial.
