Filipe Toledo, Lower Trestles, CA
Heard of Filipe Toledo? He’s part of an even-newer Brazilian wave currently taking over the surfing world. His backside air-reverses are ungodly (especially during Newcastle’s Surfest where, if it weren’t for an interference, he woulda won the whole event). Having just joined the Firewire program, Filipe was filmed during the Nike Lowers Pro at Trestles recently. A coupla the clips look to have been filmed on a VHS camcorder, but the content’s kinda phenom.

Sorry Stab, dont see that at all… Kid can surf no doubt, but he lacks power in his surfing. His arms look really weird too. He will dominate 2 foot slop everyday.. as will alot of Brazzo’s. That style of surfing is already boring me. Guys like JJF and JW can do this shit with style in 8 foot surf??
I dont know what it is about Brazilians, but they are just filthy surfers. Their styles are so bloody rank.

Thommo is right. If you watch the perfect -and I mean perfect- wave he takes off on at 1:45 you can see he has no power and cant put his board on rail. If Taj was on that waves, you would see water being sliced and thrown all over the place. Same with any other CT level surfer. Lowers brings out imperfections in people’s surfing. This guy looks slow, lazy and boring. He needs to displace more water when doing those same moves…
