Evan Geiselman pops upside-down with visions, Costa Rica

If we were to construct the perfect beach, from scratch, it would involve warm green water, some sort of jungle foliage, white, but not too white, sun, a couple of reefs and gals who haven’t been brain-washed by whatever religion is big in the area. For these reasons, we like Playa Escondida very much. Ev Geiselman does, too, although this photograph brings back painful, like literally painful, memories. The next day he busted the fibula bone in his ankle after a backside air rev went askew. The worst pain of his life, Mr Geez recalls. But, let us not dwell. For the moment, we are in Central America, without care and without woe.

Photographer profile

DJ Struntz

What is it that, for D.J. Struntz, 36, makes good photography? “Photos that move you, put you there in your mind, or inspire you to achieve things greater than yourself.” Powerful! D.J. don’t keep score of how many times the surf industry’s pinched him for cash, but it was one pinching in particular that gifted him his biggest payout: “A company outside the industry ran a Matt Beacham check-turn shot without permission – $10k.” But the photo D.J. will always hold dearest is a turn he shot Andy Irons placing: “On that trip he surfed the best I’ve ever witnessed, in person, or on video, drawing crazy, radical lines.” And, while many photogs will bend your ear about the perils of the digital age, D.J. embraces and evolves with it: “Some aspects will follow history and circle back to past trends, while technology will continue to drive it into new and exciting mediums and opportunities. Never forget the past and never stop learning so you can be prepared for the future.”
