5:20 in and we finally get surfing, the only part that matters. but then there’s only about 3 or so mins of actual surfing in a 15 min surf commercial. the rest of this pretentious ‘art piece’ is AK ‘being creative’, surreptitiously selling his sunglasses and his rvca swag, and pretending to be good on a guitar while spouting verbal diarrhea about being creative. lifestyle branding and its finest.
if there’s one practical, concrete notion that i received from going to college and reading a lot is that there’s nothing new under the sun. there is no such thing as being original. authenticity is a fallacy.
in our retarded postmodern culture today, nothing bugs me more than watching poseurs the world over think they are reinventing the wheel by ‘being creative’ with retro gear and pretending to paint and play guitar in shitty bands. this isn’t culture no matter how hard you try. you are making nothing that benefits humanity. about the only thing these poseurs have going for them is that they’ve scammed some of their industry friends into giving them a paycheck for wearing trendy threads…and they probably score a lot of chicks. more power to ye, is suppose.
my main point is: stick with surfing Al, that’s all yer good at. that’s all any pro surfer is good at. you are a pleasure to watch when you’re on a board. other than that, everyone in the white middle class world of surfing (thank you, ‘David)’, take a hint from Bukowski’s epitaph: DON’T TRY
