Day two of the 2012 Rip Curl Pro, Portugal

Holding, holding, holding. An expression session. And, then, the remaining round two heats at Rip Curl’s Portugal Pro were finished. The waves weren’t as good as the previous day but they were certainly contestable. Only four heats were run, which saw the elimination of Matt Wilko, Adam Melling, Damo Hobgood and and local hero Tiago Pires, but we now have the round three draw loaded. The final heat of the day saw Kolohe Andino scoop a winning wave in the dying seconds to beat the event’s only portuguese surfer, Tiago Pires.

“It’s finally paying off,” said Brother. “I’ve been trying really hard to wake up early, stretch and all that stuff. It’s a bummer for Tiago, he’s probably got all his people down here but it’s cool to see that they’re really passionate about surfing and their surfers. I don’t worry about anything else except for trying to requalify and trying to have some good heats. “I was worried about trying to win an event at the start of the year, and I couldn’t even make a heat. Tavarua was like the moment when it really popped, I made a fool of myself after I lost to Tiago and then I got injured so I had some time to regroup so I’m pretty happy that I’m making a few heats here and there.”

And between self-deprecating age cracks, Kai Otton offers an look into the coming days: “I made a paddling mistake and I couldn’t catch the wave – maybe I’m too old. I don’t know, but I missed it and gave up priority and Adam actually got a nice righthander straight after. I was just lucky enough that my left was behind that, otherwise he would have had the heat. Tomorrow looks reasonably good and there’s an Armaggeddon swell coming which I think is going to wash away the whole scaffolding so they probably want to finish by Tuesday. You know, conditions like last year don’t come very often so if we get even half of that, it’d be pretty amazing.”

The infamous medina hassling during 3-man heats is starting to get to my nerves. Why does he do it, he has no class whatsoever

2.

Tiago Pires… How the fuck is he even on the CT… Guy can surf, dont get me wrong, but ive seen better more innovative surfers at my local…

3.

Medina’s hassling PERIOD is starting to wear thin. So tired of his “passion” concerning the hassle battle… just surf already. You already rip. let the other guy(s) have a dig at cha, unless he is worried that they may surf better! Kid drives me fucking bonkers!! not in any good way either… at least concerning his “sportsmanship”.

I like the quote by Conan Hayes…”I couldn’t make V-necks any deeper or cooler”, so I just left it behind. If you ask the Industry hype machine, everybody is the next somebody!!!! Guys that quietly rip the bags out are becoming rare.

beded used to mix it up….got old.
knox used to vary it up… got all gym guy.
adriano even used to mix it up… got lame.
logi used to be one of the fastest on his fore-hand … got tired.
jordy was supposed to be the best in the world…..got a reality check.
dane was supposed to be kelly slater….got all artsy.
etc

etc
and all the hype goes on…………………..

1.

What happened to Pupo? he looks like dung at Lowers and Portugal! Can you say ‘new board sponsor’? C’mon, you are top 32 now. Don’t join Jordy and Alejo on the train going backwards.

2.

Tiago Pires??? should i feel sorry for him?

    3.

nope. that was a clean exit. Wilko though was a bit of a question… especially since he NEVER should have been in Rd 2 to begin with! Oh well…

    4.

    He can do a turn.

    5.

Tiago is the embodiment of the Marlon Lipke’s, Jihad Khodor’s, Tim McDonald’s, Aritz’s, and Nathanial Curren’s of the World when the Tour was 44 guys deep. Nice guys, cannon fodder.

    6.

Nope…letting go of priority with 2 min left on a wave that couldn’t have produced more than a 5. Sad moment to a deserved loss.

7.

WILKO, put your hair up or cut it. You’ll feel free when it’s no longer blocking your vision after nearly every barrel or maneuver.

    9.

I ask that same question every time I see his name on the draw… how he managed to stay there this long is pretty impressive for such a boring surfer to watch. Fingers crossed he’ll be outta there next season…

    10.

That’s how I feel about a lot of guys on tour/sponsored in general… I only tune into WCT events for Kelly, John John, Jordy to be CONSISTENTLY impressed.

      11.

      Jordy who?

mate, watch that oakley groomets shit, watch jack robbo. watch olders guys, watch the new generation. watch your falling aussie idols.. watch this pathetic jordy, julian, logie, tiago, wilko… i don’t think any of these guys can surf better than medina. i’m not kidding. and i don’t think the kid will win millions of titles. he is just ripping. fucking everyone up. EVERYONE HASSLE AT THESE DAYS. EVERYONE CLAIMS AT THESE DAYS. that is all.

it’s ridiculous sad to see joel (your super-man idol) trying hard for an air (an air ???). it’s hard to watch julian wilson (arms wide open everytime) not even achiving an inverted turn like reynolds. or even like jeremy does.
you’re all full of shit. with this blah blah blah about hassling and shit. and know this booby booshay it’s telling me to slap medina in the face? cuz he ripped the hell of the 3 men round 1 heat??

        18.

        cool story, troll.

19.

i wanna see someone knock medina out with their fists. maybe glenn hall will do it next year. that would be some spectacle.

    20.

Have to be someone underage like him, otherwise it’s child abuse…
Oh, and Julian didn’t hassle the hell out of Tiago with still 10 minutes to go on a heat, right… but cause he’s aussie it’s not hassling, it’s strategy!

21.

With hawaii coming up and with 4-man heats from start to finish in pipe and the thing filled with wildcards, I think there’s a fair chance we’ll see someone knock his lights off at some point.

22.

I’m not telling you to slap medina in the face! I’m just hoping somebody will call him out on his (what i believe to be somewhat indignant and disrespectful) approach to surfing heats…. His surfing alone will win him a vast majority of heats anyway. Does he really need to block and hassle the other two blokes in a three man heat out of a heap of waves? Boring to watch. What would be so wrong with establishing a priority format for three man heats? A line-up of such. Correct me if I’m wrong but i know when i surf and somebody is hassling the shit out of bank/peak etc the enjoyment ceases quite rapidly.

    23.

it’s professional surfing chump, it’s a game and your boy kelly has done it forever, just ask shane beschen. soft surfers can grow their hair, get a crappy film camera and hang out with dion in the shade…

24.

i would like medina so much more if he didnt hassle like 99% of brazzo surfers do. if he had been on the tour a few yrs ago and tried to pull that shit on andy he wouldve gotten his ass kicked. his dad needs to get a beat down too, fuckin wanker flailing around on the beach yelling at the judges like a monkey who escaped his cage. gabs is clearly the best brazzo on tour, so maybe he should use that designation to repair the world surfing community’s perception of brazilians as aggro douchebags. and im sick of the surf media dismissing his bullshit as “passion,” call it like it is from now on. hope kala blows the whistle on him this december.

25.

Yeah it’d be quite something to see how is attitude would change if kala were to give him a black eye.

26.

whatever happened to Jadson and his magical air reverses….

27.

The issue with Gabs is THE JUDGES NEED TO PUNISH HIM, and that’s ultimately up to the surfers. IN SO MANY HEATS I’ve seen Medina directly in someone’s line while they paddle or take off. Instead of going around him like they always do, just crash right into him!

28.

that this is a championship, not freesurf?
No time for any aloha bullshit when you’re competing.

29.

Here’s the problem.
All are worried about him.
Focus on yourselves, children.
Now the man the f2ck up and do something about it.

30.

WARNING: This thread is all about HATE.

31.

Back to the contest at hand, Taj vs a on-fire Kolohe, know you are all haters and I was too but he seems have rapidly advanced. And is surfing good and progressive.
