Freddy P, en route to a victory over CJ Hobs.

CJ

CJ sure fought hard, though.

Kai2

Kai Otton posted a 19.33 heat total... uh!

JohnDog

Is it strange to think John Florence is more experienced in big barrels than Taylor Knox?

Miguel

Miguel played giant-killer. Namely, Damo and Julian.

JulesFoam

Julian clocked a 9.87 but couldn't back up against Miggie.

BrotherBarrel

Kolohe won another heat, this time against Taj. ASP/Kirstin

DaneBottomTurn

Dane Reynolds beat Mick Fanning. Can you believe it? And, with a 10!

DaneTuck

Oops. More Dane?

DaneSlam

Well, maybe just a little.

Ace

In the day's last heat, Ace beat Alejo.

Day six of the Quiksilver Pro, France

“That was a tough heat,” said Dane Reynolds, after beating world number one Mick Fanning. “I was nervous before the heat coming up against Mick in kinda tense conditions. The peaks are all over the place and unfortunately for Mick he was out of rhythm and broke his board. It’s not easy out there. There’s obviously not pressure on myself to get a result here like Mick, but I still want to perform and surf well.”

Dane’s biggest hit was a 10, which he didn’t claim, but as is his way, he talked it down. “There are better waves out there than my 10,” the Venturan continued. “Right towards the end, I was only 10 feet from a much better wave than that, but they’re extremely difficult to find. I feel really fortunate to have even found little head dips out there because it’s really challenging.”

Kolohe Andino beat Taj Burrow today and scooped his best result so far this year, making the fourth round. “I’m really stoked to get through that heat,” Andino said. “Taj has been one of my favourite surfers for so long and he’s so deadly in these conditions. I was really lucky that a backup score didn’t come to him and I was able to find that pretty good one at the end. The fourth round is the best of my year so far so I’m just excited to keep going.”

Miguel Pupo overcame Julian Wilson’s opening 9.87 to beat the Sunny-Coaster. “I’m super thankful that wave came through,” said Miguel. “The conditions are really fun and there are good barrels out there. Julian had that really good one, but couldn’t find a second one. I had a pretty okay first one and then got that good right at the end. Really stoked to get through and hopefully the barrels keep on coming.”

And Joel Parkinson danced on the inside today when his pal and (currently) biggest title opponent, Mick Fanning, lost to Dane in the heat before Joel paddled out. It was especially sweeter when Joel won his heat. “They’re really tricky conditions,” said Joel. “I saw Dane get a 10 and I wanted to try and find one like that, but I figured every other heat has been quite low scoring. So if you get a 7, it’s like a 9, and you get a 3 or a 4, the rest of the heat I just played defence trying to keep him off anything. It was a tricky heat with not a lot of waves, and a lot of paddling. It doesn’t matter in these conditions who you draw – anyone can beat anybody.”

Owen Wright and Freddy Patacchia will face off in the opening heat when competition resumes. With any luck, in a few hours’ time.

didnt he just win his heat?

2.

Not really mate and I would rather watch dane out there any way. The trials are the way in for a local.

3.

taj should have won. don’t say otherwise.

4.

The only way parko cant be #1 after this event is if he places 5th or 9th and Slater wins. Either way its another keeper score for him, and the further he gets the further he’ll pull away from mick. So after 7 events parko already has 7 keepers, and mick & slater both have 2 throwaways.. you cant argue the numbers – “acknowledge that mate”.

5.

Micks won 2 world titles chumps… Trust me, he can beat anybody. Comment when Dane wins…. well anything….

1.

shouldn´t it be mandatory that the wildcard in a contest held in a country with no current tour representative was a local surfer? the asp is fixed

    2.

Ya tough when a freesurfer is better than world #1 and everyone knows it

13.

Taj got screwed. His 9.57 was better than Dane’s 10, and he lost to Kolohe by 0.2 needing a 2.7

    14.

Taj didn’t get screwed. He screwed himself by not finding a back up. He would have won easily if he’d just caught a wave (any wave) in the last few minutes. He said it himself in the post-heat interview that he psyched himself out.

15.

otherwise. chloe andino is the best young surfer in the world and the cutest. also charges witch he showed by getting some of the craziest barrels of the event so far.

16.

hey bender, talking about joel boring parko… if i we’re ya i wouldn’t give a fuck for your hero boy. not gonna happen. acknowledge that mate! and be happy.. the new kids and the hungry ones won’t let that happen. just watch mate.

hey mick, you know the guy rick cain he gonna stomp your ass

This is the ultimate test for Parko. This is his chance and he can take it now or be a forgotten man in competitive surfing history. Don’t believe me? Well how many people still talk about Dave Macaulay? Slater must be grinning like a Cheshire cat. Whenever his opponents are on the black ball they go in off and once again Slater rises to the occasion, as all champions do. Julian Wilson…. wow father time is kicking in already…. what 24 now and still yet to win on the CT. Jordy teen sensation/ world title prospect to cruiser… Taken on more of Parko’s character than his surfing style. Sure it is a lottery in those conditions but look at Slater….. he gets through those shit heats time and time again. Can the asp please insist that the Hobgoods retire. They still surf well but just because Slater and Taylor are sticking around does that mean that all the tour is going to battle on into their late 30s, 40s?

Snake’s demeanor during Dane’s heat was strange. It wasn’t brutal honesty, it was straight-up being an asshole.
