Day one of the 2012 Rip Curl Pro, Portugal

And we’re in. Supertubos, scene of the Rip Curl Pro, Portugal, finally came to life and delivered, depending on your standards, very good waves for round one and most of round two. Joel Parkinson came outta the gates hard, posting a 17.17 combined total to scoop a win in round one. “This morning was tough as there weren’t really a lot of waves breaking through so you had to be on the ones that offered the most scoring opportunity,” said Joel. “I’m here to win. Everyone is. I’ve had a few seconds this year but am keen to put a win on the board. I’m not thinking about the World Title race really. I need to get some wins first before that can become a reality.”

Focused! But, there’s one man who, coy as he may be, will be Joel’s biggest problem. “My preparation varies from event to event,” said Kelly Slater, who also won his round one heat. “Supertubos, on its day, is one of the funner waves we have one tour. It can be big and barreling and close to shore and the crowd is right there so you feel like you’re interacting with them in the lineup. It’s a great place.”

Kelly also shrugged off talk of the title squeeze: “No pressure at the moment. I obviously have to perform in the last three events and so do all the other guys. When the race is close like it is this year, it’s definitely a lot more exciting and I feel like I perform well in those situations. The younger guys like Gabriel and John John and that whole generation are so talented. I’m lucky that I probably only have to compete against them for three more events.” How many times y’heard that?

Mick Fanning admitted to feeling off this morning, but his 16.17 total in round two was certainly a turnaround. “I was a little bit freaked out this morning,” said Mick. “The waves weren’t that great so I just wanted to go out again and catch waves in this afternoon’s heat. I’ve been a little bit on edge in the last few heats in France and this morning, so it was good to get a few waves under the belt and just relax a little.”

But, what of title number three, Mick? Do you want it? “It’s been a while and I sort of almost moved on from those first two World Titles,” Mick continued. “I’ve been trying to re-invent myself so I’m not too stressed and I’m having a lot more fun this year. I just want to surf well and if I can do that consistently you know I’ll be happy.”

Check back here in a few hours to see if the event rolls again.

Can we all acknowledge that Patty Gudang has the worst luck out of any surfer? He has to be the best surfer to ever be dead last…

2.

For fuck sake someone please tell the cam guys to stop this stupid zooming in a lot of the waves AGAIN you could only see the surfer on a 3ft wave. It’s fucking pointless not being able to see some of the approaching sections and some of the wave behind let alone not seeing the friken top of the wave.
Kelly made a point of this at this comp last year but obviously none of these fucking tool bags has addressed the issue.
And lower the cam towers the photos from beach level make the wave look amazing where filming looking down on the wave makes it look smaller and less intense.
Hopefully the take over tour will address such simple issues as how to film surfing PROPERLY.

3.

Yeah I swear patty has slept with the head judges wife or something.

4.

stop this thing already, asp. can´t you see that travis logie surfs like the average joe? five points for two poopier than adriano stance snapbacks in barrelling conditions? WTF, if this guys stance was any lower he´d be canoe riding. And power moves executed poorly shouldn´t be that much rewarded, as a not so deep barrel gets a 2.5 or the same for a lame air.

5.

how was that Medina/Wilko paddle battle NOT an interference on Medina? I can’t believe it. Great contest so far, judges look to be trying to redeem their trestles “performance”. But am still a little baffled at the lack of an interference call against Median? oh well, I smell…
and that “10″ point ride from Medina was a bit over scored! His nose was clearly visible throughout the entire ride. beautiful yes, perfect no.

p.s. Pat G. got robbed… again!

1.

Jordy!! Dear oh dear what has become of the prodigal son?

2.

He surfs a damn shitty tactical heat, and obviously is not as focused as years past. kinda sad really.

3.

Mick Fanning rips , just saying , not!

    4.

what did you mean? are you french?

6.

I feel bad for Jordy, such a stylish surfer, and probably the most well round surfer on tour…

    7.

if he it he’ll need to take it.. just cos he’s easily one of the best surfers on the planet doesn’t mean results are gonna fall in his lap

    8.

Yeah he’s more well rounded than Kelly, John and Julian isn’t he…

9.

    10.

For sure. There are many way less talented surfers ahead of him on the ratings – he’ll get there eventually. Like Kerrsy a few years ago. This was an enjoyable day of surfing to watch. Wilko’s rodeo was a good one, more of that to stay on tour.

    11.

Pat Gudang rips.. innovative, full repertoire (spelled that wrong prob).
Yeah, he is one of the best surfers like Wilko and Jordy and yet .. missing by a few points.
My opinion is unchanged if he gets 15th or 44th. Guy still is one of the top 6-12 guys.

12.

Can someone please save everyones ears and fire Joe Turpell. The guy is trash. No one wants to hear him talk!

    13.

Nando, Joe Twerp has always been disliked, hated, and dispised. Feel confident that your hatred and anger are shared amongst the majority. He inserts bullsh@t…. muddies up the webcast.

Sooooooo true! The $8 hr camera men, who also spend more time following the same three beak nosed chicks around the beach, while missing waves in the comp. The angles sometimes are so fucked, that when you see the water replay, you have no idea its the same wave. Fix this crap, and get real announcers. Even my girlfriend hears Joe Turpel, and asks why the announcers are so bad.

Joe turpel is painful can’t listen to him who talks like that? needs to go.

19.

ok Stab… time to set Pat Gudang up with Rosy… maybe things will change….

20.

Rip Curl, you are the biggest bag of shit, of all the comp sponsors. Not only did you completely mess up Kelly’s points last year at Ocean Beach (premature indoctrination), but every time you hold a comp, you are constantly saying its ‘on’ when its clearly not. The surf sucked all day in Portugal today, yet the webbie said ‘ON!’ Round 2 on standby. I’m sure you are registering number of hits to justify our sponsorship. 4:45 pm start to run a couple heats? Wake up, call it off, quit hyping nothing. that is why all you companies are in trouble.

    21.

Yeah cause Rip Curl were the ones that awarded the title to Kellys and did all the calculations weren’t they? Shut up

22.

Goooooo wilko

23.

Wilko needs to stop drinking piss every night, start doing sit ups, and start taking pro surfing seriously. He might actually win a title if he stopped being the town drunk. That said, I sure miss HoyoBarfly

    24.

Um… the guy did a rodeo flip.
    A f2cking rodeo…
You have the “gym” guys like Taylor Knox that aren’t even pulling frontside airs.
Guys that are bending over each other on yoga mats are scratching their heads..
His result is not taking it seriously… he even mentioned that he does better when his mind is free in the interview.

25.

WILKO NEEDS TO CUT HIS HAIR, or put it in a bun or something… I’ve had hair like that but it gets in the way of performance.

26.

Slater overscored…. as usual…

    27.

where te hell are you coming from?

28.

Jordy… sort it out mate. bring 1 home for the saffas.
