Jordy

Jordy Smith got the best photo, but worst result. Kid's gone!

Michel

Ads De Souza, combined total of 19.43, thanks.

Taj

Taj Burrow won a paddle battle with Damo Hobgood, his round one heat, and the hearts of those in the channel.

Mick

Mick Fanning lost out to Taylor Knox in round one, but bounced back with a win in the first heat of round two.

Simppo

Brett Simpson couldn't get past his opponents in round one. But, them's the breaks when it's so small.

KerrFS

Josh Kerr, totally frontside at Chopes.

KerrBS

And, backside. Right, left, whatevs – he dominated his round one heat.

John

John Florence opened first heat of the day with a 17.34 combined total. A shape of things to come, wethinks.

Kelly

Kelly Slater landed in Tahiti in the morning, and beat Alain Riou and Trav Logie in the afternoon.

Joel

Joel Parko came first in his heat with 15.50 points. Kai Otton came last in the same heat, with 2.83. Inconsistency!

Bede

Bede Durbidge scored 10 points less than his defeater, Ads De Souza. Again, inconsistency, huh?

Day One of the 2012 Billabong Pro, Tahiti

Round one of the Billabong Pro, Tahiti (and heats one and two of the second round) ran today in underwhelming, four-five feet Chopes. Ads De Souza was, on paper, standout performer of the day with a combined heat-total of 19.43. “I’m so happy right now,” he said. “Last year was really big and today is only four feet, but still very fun. I just had fun and caught the good barrels and the judges liked it. I’m very happy right now. I’m having a good year. Every year, I focus on what I need to improve on and go out and work on it. I feel more confident at every spot, I feel strong and have good boards right now.”

Johnny Florence was, unsurprisingly, another standout. Kid’s been hitting Chopes since age 10 and knows the place intimately to win his round one heat convincingly. “It’s actually cleaned up a lot from this morning,” said the Hawaiian. “This morning was really bad. The sun’s come out now though and there are a few, little barrels. It’s still really fun. We’re here in Tahiti and I’m loving it. I was trying to find a cleaner, open waves and do whatever I could with them. I had one where I did a bunch of turns and ended up on the reef and had another where I got a little barrel. It’s actually scary at this size and in these conditions on your backhand because the barrels really chandelier and you can end up on the reef really quick. Pumped to get through, though.”

And, as if you couldn’t have guessed, a fashionably-late Kelly Slater also killed his round one match. “I actually caught the last plane I could have caught to make my heat and I barely made it this morning,” he said. “It’s not often that the waves in California are better than Tahiti, but there hasn’t been a whole lot of surf here and we’ve had pretty good waves at home. It doesn’t look like there’s a hot forecast for this year which is a shame, but there’s still fun surf to be had. It’s Teahupo’o and you can sometimes take for granted how beautiful the waves are here. I’ve been coming here since ’93 so it’s about 20 years and I still love it. It’s still so raw. There’s no real big business here. It’s all families and we stay with them and it’s still a very special place.”

In a surprise end to the day, Jordy Smith was eliminated from the event by wildcard winner Ricardo Dos Santos in the final heat. In the morning, Jules Wilson will take on Willian Cardoso, possibly at 7am. Tune in here to catch it.

I wonder sometimes, what would you guys think if he was blues eyes, blonde and from US or Australia. He would be a god, because if guys like Kolohe, Conner, Dion and etc… and they are idols, imagine Medina, generating speed like that, doing all kind of air (see the one against Adriano), and ripping at Fiji.

More than haters, you guys are just little media-toys and it makes me feel sorry for all of you.

Because when a well-packaged web of lies has been sold gradually to the masses over generations, the truth will seem utterly preposterous and its speaker a raving lunatic.

Keep thinking that everyone from exotic countries are lunatics, keep buying all off the new hipster surf products, keep hatting everything that is different and keep believing that you guys made the decisions about what is ugly and what is cool, who is ripping and who is not.
Keep praising the Hawaiian local who beat your face every season, buy clothes from a brand controlled by a murder in the 80′s.
And keep hating good 18 years old kids, that came from a place where “you have to get off your but” ( Shane Dorian ).

Because is not your fault. You guys have a good heart but were trained to be like this.

Oh, my god…. maybe another brazilian in the final?? Blondies will suck!! Let´s take only the last few weeks: Medina second in Fiji… ADS won in J. Bay… Pupo second in Huntington… Carlos Burle wins big wave challenge in Pico Alto… Ricardo dos Santos wins Teahupo trials… It´s unreal, no?? Brazilian Storm is coming, boys……

3.

of course, of course, but this is not anovelty..You know what? We hear the same stuff since a little while now, and of course, we also know that De Souza has a poo stance, and that brazilians have a shitty style. We all know the judges are forced to give them score, because Billabong has to sell stuff in Brazil too, and you don’t need to tell us that it’s a shame to see Dane Reynolds, who is so talented, surfing shitty waves in Cali while we have to suffer the view of plenty of brazilians on the WT…Did I forgot soemthing? I’m sure gonna read it tomorrow if there is a second round. See you tomorrow, I can’t wait…

4.

Nah imagine if every event had 1 wild card selected by a fan voting system that would be sick. Think of the possibilities… Tom curren, Bruce, marzo, Dane, ozzy,Dorian, rasta, job, goodall, lee Wilson, wardo, occy, jack r , Wayne lynch….the list is endless….. Don’t know if anyone would vote for job tho he seems pretty disliked?

5.

All the Aussies that keep ripping into the Brazzo’s about lack of style please remember – Barton Lynch, Damien Hardman, GARY ELKERTON, HOYO, Blake Thorton, and the list goes on. Lets all just shut the fuck up and be a bit more positive.

1.

Wens Occy heat!

    2.

No one reply to K he”s a stab troll.

3.

this is a serious question – why is occy not commentating? Don’t Bong like him anymore?

    4.

Occy had some family issues to work through with a councillor – that was why he missed surfing in the Jbay event, it could be that he has his priorities straight and is still working them through.

5.

Weird see’in Kerrsy goin a right at chopes.. You think it being a left reef break it would be so mechanical, which I heard it is, to see it break right tho…. Werid.. he surfed the fuck out of it tho!!

6.

A couple of years back when Dane was on the WCT he went a right at chops I think it was a couple of feet bigger it Was a good backdoor like wave as well. Josh was a bit under scored I think. There were 3or4 really good waves Adrianos was a bomb as was Alain Rious sad to think these waves could be the best we might see for the whole event.
Fingers crossed the swell hangs for tomorrow when the winds are better and maybe maybe something at end of the waiting period.

7.

fanning was so lucky to get through his round 2 heat. very lucky!!

8.

Medinas style took me a while to work it out but it looks like he is riding like someone doing a switch stance like JOB going left. Medina looks awkward until he’s in the air.

    9.

I really struggle with all surfers styles! They all really seem crap….. Really… Even Ke11y, he is shit.

    10.

    11.

yeah, yeah. He´s got this ugly style ant can´t surf big waves, but on the other hand, we´ve got you HHMMM, who is such a great stylish surfer….

12.

how about you show some goofys ?

    13.

    WHY???

14.

claymarzo.com

    15.

I do not think so wildcards should be given to guys that want to compete or that travel the world slugging it out in QS crap against fly weight kids who can only do airs in beachy crap that the QS dishes out. Plenty of crew on the QS that can surf real waves but don’t get the chance to make to the WCT because of 1ft waves on the QS and brazilians doing 3 air rev on every wave.

      16.

psh… some people slave away on the wqs who just aren’t that good compared to wct. don’t bring anything extra to the table. if they do i’m all down for it: mitch colebrun was a nice wildcard in fiji …but some poeple like clay marzo, dane reynolds, would be sick to see go against wct. especially when conditions favor them

STAB, check your full frame re Flores: “His only other wave was a 1.33. But, he did enough to beat CJ Hobgood and Freddy Patacchia.”

C.J. Hobgood (USA) 16.93, Jeremy Flores (FRA) 13.77, Fredrick Patacchia (HAW) 11.70. Jeremy didn’t beat CJ and also caught more than 3 waves.

19.

K is a tool.

20.

Look at shauncansdell.com his latest clip is crazy. Thanks for the heads up sandman

    21.

never seen him before… first time i’ve ever been amped to try air… prob had something to do with sick music

    23.

    Shut up you fool.

      24.

You shut shut up, blunt in the butt.

    25.

Brilliantly put it! The americans specially worship Dane Reynolds a phony spoiled brett hipster surfer wanna be artist that never had work to work hard a day in he’s life, when kids like ADS and Medina came from a very humble (to not say poor) origin and had to work to get where they are. Sacrifice parties and other pleasures that a young guy normally does.

And don’t get me start with your teen idols Kolohe, Coffin etc. Medina and Pupo are ripping and dominating in the airs and in big hollow barrels. Medina runner up Fiji!?!?!? Pupo winner Fernando de Noronha in perfect barrels and runner up in shitty waves at yankees OP!?!?!? Shut up already!

26.

stab didn’t want to put Adriano barrel ( 100 times more heavier than JJ one ) because he grabbed his balls specially for you guys! laughing of all of you! haha

    27.

adriano got the wave of the day no doubt, and they should have put up jj turn wave

28.

29.

Brazillians are all still part caveman.

    30.

and you like it rough, don’t ya?

31.

Yeah, exactly stab, perfect. Adriano, on paper, was the stand out of the day. But only on paper, right?…

    32.

Of course, only on paper, and to be clear, it was on euro or brazzo paper, you won’t imagine an australian or american magazine saying a brazilian could be a stand out, when there are an aussie or a yank around!!! That would be treason!

This year, and more largely, this decade will mark the end of US/Australia hegemony in surfing, and that’s something a lot of them can’t swallow for sure. For australians, that’s because it’s the last sport where they can rule, so it would be a pity to loose such a position! That will leave them with australian football (?) and maybe boomerang contests?
For the US, it will be easier, ’cause they saw that kind of things happened already, and because they still rule in plenty of other sports, but for the hawaiians, it will be difficult too! They are big guys, manly you know, they’re at home, they invented surfing, mmh? That will be another tatoo thing for them, like “once a champ”, or “former rulers”, maybe Sunny Garcia will trade his “death and taxes” (how witty!) to “for sale, make an offer”?

33.

JEREMY FLORES IS THE MAN

34.

Does GT still have eyebrows? That is a whack lookin outfit, especially with him giggling on the rocking boat.

35.

36.

Ah d you dickhead it’s 2012 not 1980 and Blake Thorton was never going to do good on the wct so let’s concentrate on surfers in the top 34 who should not be there JADSON A round 2 at chops this year was a fucking disgrace to surfing and surfing style of 2012.

37.

i had a wank in the bushes at rincon once.. or twice

38.

My my the Brasilian whiners. teahupoo is perfect for a Brasilian win this yesr. Go for it and don’t whine when JJ or KS wins it.
