Reckon this man, Adriano De Souza, defending Rio champ, is gonne do everything he can to win this event?

flores017rio12kirstin

Frenchman Jeremy Flores scooped himself a ticket straight into round three after beating Kolohe Andino and Heitor Alves.

Resizzle

wright463rio12kirstin

Owen Wright used a frontside advantage to beat Raoni Monteiro and Taylor Knox in round one.

wright419rio12kirstin

Turns like this didn't hurt his chances, either.

wilsonrio12kirstin1_0170

Jules Wilson posted the day's highest combined total of 17.14. Reckon he's fired up after a first-round interference at Lowers?

pupo873rio12kirstin

Miguel Pupo, a goofy jibber, had no probs dusting regular- footed powerdewds Tiago Pires and Michel Bourez on the small lefts.

otton545rio12kirstin

Kai Otton fell (just) behind local fav Ads De Souza. See you in round two, Kai.

buchan676rio12kirstin

Ace Buchan steamed down the line on his last wave to post a 9. He liked it, too. And so did we.

medina634rio12kirstin

Gabs Medina looked to have a bow on his heat, til Ace Buchan hammered out a 9 in the dying minutes.

logie695rio12kirstin

Mick Fanning was too hot for Trav Logie to handle. The South African now faces Raoni Monteiro in round two.

fanning720rio12kirstin

Mick clocked the days' second-highest total of 16.34 in his round one heat. Coming off a win feels good, huh.

andre081rio12kirstin

Jadson Andre mighta had local knowledge but couldn't pull it together in round one.

durbidge063rio12kirstin

Bede Durbidge managed to slip past Jadson, but not heat-winner Josh Kerr.

kerr982rio12kirstin

Ask a lot of guys on tour and they'll tell you that Josh Kerr is one of the biggest threats.

Pretty, yes?

Day one of the 2012 Billabong Pro, Rio

Today the Billabong Pro, Rio kicked off at the back-up venue of Arpoador. With competitors almost grazing elbow on rock paddling into the takeoff, the lefts wedged and grew down the line but wee often too quick. The webcast was plagued by ‘technical difficulties’ all morning, for which the ASP had this to say: “The event would like to apologise to all its fans for the technical difficulties that prevented a solid webcast from streaming for most of the morning. ASP technicians are working with event staff to enhance the production and ensure streaming is improved for the remainder of the event.”

Whether it was streamable or not, Julian Wilson pasted a 9.27 outta 10 (the day’s highest single wave score) and a combined heat-total of 17.14 outta 20 (also the days’ highest).

“I got kinda lucky there because Freddy didn’t go on that wave,” said Jules. “The set before that, Freddy went on the first wave and the one behind was better. I think he was worried about that happening again and when that second set came through, it lined up really well for me. I got to my feet straight away, but then saw that the section was still building and wasn’t really there yet. I took my time and squared it up because I really wanted to get strong starts to those waves, keep it clean and not try to rush it.”

Jules also spoke briefly about his round one elimination at Trestles last week, thanks to an interference: “I think after that heat at Lowers where I had the interference, today was a bit of redemption,” he said. “To come down here, I still had a bit of frustration and I just wanted to come out of the gates strong and get a good solid start. The waves were really fun in that heat, so it was exciting to do well.”

Taj Burrow also dominated his heat today, scooping a 16.16 heat total and skip round two. “It’s always good to get that first round out of the way,” said Taj. “Skipping the second round is a real treat. I hate that round and it was great to catch a couple of fun lefts. It was kind of inconsistent at the start. My board was brand new, so I was a bit nervous, but it went well.”

And of his performance at the Rip Curl Pro, the West-Australian said: “Bells was a shocker and they always hurt, especially after a win. I was hungry and confident to back it up and had an absolute meltdown there. It happens, but I don’t feel any pressure. I know exactly what I did wrong. I surf better when I’m relaxed and happy and want to have fun. I put pressure on myself down there, but that’s not how I operate. Here, there’s no pressure.”

Another man who’s currently emitting steam is Ads De Souza. He won his round one heat over Kai Otton and Brazilian Willian Cardoso. “It feels good to be here at Arpoador,” said Adriano. “I just love this place. I’ve been competing here since I was an amateur and I always love to come back. It’s good to see the WCT here again and it’s got me excited and motivated as well.”

But, how does Kelly’s absence effect Ads’ game? “There’s a lot of pressure being defending champion and with Kelly not here,” he said. “I’m the second seed and could take the lead for the title if I do well here. It’s still too early to really consider the title, but I know the crowd is behind me at this event.”

When men’s competition resumes, up first will be Gabs Medina against Peterson Crisanto in Heat 1 of the elimination Round 2.

imagine watching them surf in good waves, that would be a treat

2.

shitty waves for womens round two. i’m sad for the girls. san fran was shitty too!
sure miss imbituba!

3.

Agreed. I mean, Im kinda biased ’cause I’m from Rio and I always wished I could be a tourist here.
Anyway, like the video that was just posted, there are way better venues here and next by(Saquarema last year e.g.) , but they always choose to put the contest in some upscale neighborhood without any good waves. All about the money and brohoe. Just sucks to see Rio represented like that knowing that there are some good waves somewhere near.

Just 500 way from the event main stage there is an excellent jetty, but really protect by ‘wealthy fag asses jiu jitsu’ locals. Put some cops in there and you will run the competition in 4 days with decent waves.
It’s bullshit. I surf Barra beach in my week days and it sucks bad, so does Arpoador without a special swell.
prepare yourself, there is not decent swell coming soon.

4.

what is rack

5.

SF last year got much worst than this and no one complained.
So for you guys who like to whine, the thing to do is keep crying over your keyboards, while the surfers are doing their jobs, because after all, they’re professionals.

1.

Worst waves for a WCT webcast i have ever witnessed… what a JOKE!

2.

it’s amazing how well these guys can surf average waves. Ace’s last wave was pretty sick. Good to see the goofy’s getting a go on their forward.

    3.

4.

There’d be more rack at that event than Cobains coffee table. Owen to win.

    5.

    what is rack

6.

It ryhmes with yoke

7.

Dennis, rack = heroin

All the pros sprinkle it on their weetbix

    8.

    Rack = tony yayo, Dane.

9.

Dennis you drug addict. SEEK HELP

10.

Isn’t Tony Yayo that guy off Australian Idol?

11.

looks to me like the backside floater will be a heavy hit again this year with the judges. glad to see ace justly win a heat for once.

12.

cant be fuckin bothered to even watch this drivel

13.

hate and hate.
why do you even bother to turn on the webcast? I bet you can find more interesting things to do. Try a book instead.

    14.

we watch the webcast (or the ‘dream tour’ ) because were passionate about surfing, and want to watch the best surfers in the world battling each other (and themselves) in the best waves. Plus i cant read. slater cut himself, a small price to pay for your dignity

15.

terrible surf how embarrassing for billabong – the boys were hating it, it was written all over their faces. I really don’t care if the webcast doesn’t work the entire event – I doubt many people want to watch that crap

I complained for SF too, as well as for NYC, 2 hrs of average or good surf is not enough to qualify a good spot. SF, NYC or Rio aren’t WT venues, just huge shops for sponsors customers. They would be professionnal in good waves too, you know, it’s also a customer view! If nobody watch the Rio webcast, Biilaquikcurl would maybe think of changing venues.

19.

What about heats on demand and/or heat by heat videos? I hope organizers aren’t affraid of eventual controversy on the judgement.

20.

no funding for JBAY but we have to watch this shit. it is the kind of surf that you would drive away from. sort your shit out ASP, this is horrible. hot tip: if the wave doesnt feature anyones list for the 100 best waves in the world, dont fucking go there and hold an event!

21.

Is this comp really happening. Fully agree with Rorta – everyone should drive away from this shocking stop on tour. With all the publicity our sport needs to attract serious snsorship this comp / spot is damaging.

22.

jeeez

Rio is a shit, Imbituba was way too better venue to run

23.

Michael Ho having fun carioca style! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5keJaZpttOo
shut up whiners, shove your complaints up your asses.

24.

Looking at the pros instagram, facebook and twitter I can defenitly say that the only ones not having fun in Rio are the viewers.
All pros seems to be ok witht the shitty waves.

25.

they dont look like they are having too much fun in the water ‘Me, Myself and I’. as a tourist destination it would be a lot of fun. as a venue for a WT comp, its a joke. there is no point in even trying to debate it.

26.

waiting for some spider monkey to do a backside “rock’n roll” floater…. ooohh, ahhh, ignorant brazzo public can get excited over antics and claims of passion for white-water torquing…. and maybe see the super boy t-shirt get pulled out. be nice to see some a$$ on the beach instead of flail monkey foam climbs.

28.

No triple me, they should have the contest at Prainha and everybody knows it.
That’s where ho is surfing on that youtube video.
Maybe for environmental issues they couldn’t do it there, don’t really know. If that’s the case, then the quebra-mar (jetty) you mentioned would be perfect.
Anyone knows why not Prainha?

29.

That’s absolutely true, there’s better spots to hold a WT event in Brazil than Rio.
