what has anyone done to get into the surfer’s hall of fame? as an artform/ sport that is by definition subjective, it’s really hard to argue that anyone in the surfer’s hall of fame has any ‘solid accomplishments.’

But even from the perspective of a red blooded surf jock grasping for objectivity, dane reynold’s effect on the competitive and ‘free-surfing’ worlds of surfing have been so measurably impactful that he undoubtedly deserves this. He not only greatly altered the ASP World Tour judging criteria, for better or worse he fundamentally changed the way average bro surfer views a wave. it’s like how christian fletcher will be etched deeper in surfing’s collective subconscious than damien hardman….

Whatever you wanna say about the surf industry, ‘sucking off the right folks’, how gay/faggoty it is to be a spoiled American, it doesn’t really matter after watching a few marinelayer clips in comparison to high performance surfing circa 2005-6-7.

Please, this is so f*****g stupid. Next time a toddler busts an air, I think he should go straight to the hall of fame. Why not now? Because you do not anoint people to the hall of fame in any sport until they ‘retire’..that is what gives a Hall of Fame some credibility. The guy is in his 20′s, a competitive failure, and social dud. If he is is the “Hall”, then it only holds any significance if B Margeson, Davey Smith, Kevin Reed, and about 100 other guys better be in. Why? Because they were ridiculously inspirational in their day, did things so one else could do, and did it for WAY longer than Dane. This whole thing is a suck fest of such massive proportions, that I can’t believe the surf industry doesn’t drown from the bukkake. At least Joe Montana, Pete Sampras, and Michael Jordan had to finish their successful sports careers before getting into their Halls. Dane rips, but this is such BS, that it is absurd. He should not be mentioned in the same breath as Rabbit Kekai.

Why don’t they put Blake Griffin in the NBA Hall of Fame now? Why not stick Tiger Woods in the Golf Hall now? Cause their career aren’t over yet, and people don’t get in to any Hall worth anything til after they do it for a while. Even the biggest crock o shit ever…the hand prints on the Hollywood walk of Fame…take a while to get. Stop sucking this guys balls, Surf Industry. YES he rips, YES we love to watch him, but at this rate you will milk every dew drop of joy out of our consumer testicles and make us hate him. I am pretty sure Taylor Knox has been inducted too, didn’t win a world title, won some events however, did he? BUT it’s about the sport of surfing, not the tour, not competition, but what they brought to the table. And Dane brought a whole load of whoop ass, was going to happen sooner or later however, why in 20 years and not now?

Dane is an incredible surfer.. you can’t really try to be very objective in terms of surfing. Sure, Shaun Thompson has gotten a world title and so has Barton Lynch. When you really look at the wave as a canvas that inspires others and set that as a litmus, you might find Dane to be on the top of many peoples’ lists in terms of progressiveness. If you want to put those in the hall of fame for world title or contest wins that is fine as well. Rob Machado has not won a world title, but is an incredible surfer and again transforms the waves as open canvases. Rob and Dane inspire great surfing. I guess to some this is not enough. So in my little opinion, I believe Dane should be recognized for his progression and inspiring generations of surfers to follow.

Dane’s definitely a game changer, but this seems too premature. I guess this is similar to Bruce being inducted in 2007, but before someone like Fanning?

I agree, everyone should be in a Hall of Fame somewhere…L8drop for great commentary, Rasta for most Dolphins petted, Marlon Lipke for best German ever. Its all well deserved.

By the way, Dane did not ‘change judging in the ASP’….he couldn’t pull half of his turns in heats. The revision in judging criteria was on the table already, before he got on Tour. He had the POTENTIAL to go where no one had gone before. Jadsen, Slater, Kerr, Medina, etc. are the ones that actually changed the criteria, and to say “Oh this guy might get here one day, we have change the judging” is just plain dumb. Revisionist history is for fan boys, and teenage girls who blindly think that Green Day started Punk Rock. Dane pulls most of his insane crap when he is out of the limelight…how surfing should be. He is revolutionary, but don’t mix up facts in an effort to join the herd in swallowing the pipe. By the way, how much better is someone like Slater…he sees everyone else going big as the trend shifts, shrugs his shoulders, and goes bigger than anyone instantly in his late 30′s. THAT is Hall worthy.

Of course its being presented in front of Huntington Surf and Sport…the spot with the worst waves on Planet Earth, fights with Santa Cruz over the title of Surf City,a nd is the center of all things “Bro’d” and sucked to be ‘IN’. No doubt we should take it seriously when its a) there in the OC, and b) Rockin Fig is presenting it. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO lame.

Surfing is a pro sport now…the Industry desperately wants it (see Billabong financial problems, Quicksilver downgrades, Rip Curl pulling the Search) and needs it. Dane is a PRO surfer whether you like it or not. He is not a ‘soul surfer’, and he is not part of the back woods, anti establishment, ‘surfing is not the NBA or PBA’ group. He is a top pro that gets paid millions to go surf. therefore he is held to standards by the public as a pro athlete…and they do not get into any hall of fames before they do anything, or their careers are over. Period. Quit trying to make exceptions for surfers. You don’t like it, go surf by yourself, but Dane is held to the standards of multi million dollar pro athletes, cause that is what he is. The ‘Industry’ is doing more damage to this guy by giving him fictitious awards, making him super environmental spokesman, and licking his boots. I wish surfing would go back to being a non-sport too, but it won’t, so therefore it is perfectly fine to criticize athletes who WILLINGLY PUT THEMSELVES IN THE LIMELIGHT FOR MONEY. That is part of being ‘pro’. Quit acting like a bunch of wounded sissies when your favorite idol is heckled. He chose the life, and took the money. His faults are on display, and like it or not that is part of the gig. Not saying its right, but thats how the game works. He is no doubt one of the best surfers on Earth, but he is also no doubt gotten way too many accolades based on his performance as a pro…which is poor.

We care because our consumer dollars pay Dane’s 6 figure salary. He is actually paid to entertain us, we own him. Contractors that rip are paid to be builders, Dane is a pro surfer that gets paid by us, to do that. His work is critiqued. Simple. He frickin rips though, but it is way too soon for a Hall of Fame
