Cloudbreak misfire or a very bad call?

The timing couldn’t have been worse. As contest director Matt Wilson was telling hundreds of thousands of disappointed fans on the internet that conditions were not good enough to run the Volcom Pro, Fiji today, Australian Ryan Hipwood was screaming his way through a perfect 12 foot tube.

“We’ve called it off for the day because the wind hasn’t cooperated….and it’s gotten worse since we called off the event,” he said, as the webcast team crossed to live images of Australian big-wave surfer, Ryan Hipwood piloting a cartoonish tube at Cloudbreak.

The much hyped and anticipated swell predicted to hit Fiji arrived today, sending triple overhead barrels thundering across the reef and witnessing some of the most spectacular surfing action in history. Two heats of the Volcom Pro were run in the morning, with Bede Durbidge beating Adam Melling in a tubeless affair and Kai Otton edging out Raoni Monteiro despite the Brazilian scoring a several-second 12-foot tube before being crushed as he attempted to doggy door it. Then they called it off.

“For all the people watching on the webcast, you have to understand that the chop on the face is pretty extreme. It’s just not safe,” continued Matt Wilson

Big wave legend, Dave Wassel who is on the Volcom webcast team (and killing it, btw) and had surfed it that morning, agreed with the call.

“It’s the correct call. These guys with the giant boards travel around the world for stuff like this but these guys on the pro tour, they aren’t riding ten foot boards…There is huge amounts of chop coming up the face,” he said.

It was true, Adam Melling was clearly under gunned in the opening heat of the day and it’s unlikely many pros had the required boards to surf the waves. But why? It’s not like this swell took anyone by surprise. Surely, they could have included a couple of ten footers among the hundred or so boards they’re given by their shapers every year?

In any case, what followed as the tide dropped out and the wind swung more favourable can only be described as mesmerizing live surfing footage. Damian Hobgood was one of a dozen World Tour surfers who ventured into the lineup, including Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, Kelly Slater, John Florence and Josh Kerr.  The Floridian put on a master class, dropping in late on one, dragging the anchor, getting sucked back up the face and riding above the foam ball before emerging from the barrel. It was one of several incredible waves. Underground Chilean charger, Ramon Navarro scored arguably the wave of the day, highlining a 12 footer, riding behind the foamball for an age and coming out long after the spit. Other highlights include Mark Healey’s stand tall spitting canon and Pat Gudauskas impersonation of the infamous Jay Moriarity Iron Crucifix, when he stuck an impossible air drop on which his board was blown sideways to almost a right angle. Even the Tavarua boat operator scored himself a triple barrel.

Kelly Slater agreed with the call, saying that the chop on the face was enough to warrant the event being called off, though also called it “one of the best big wave days of all time and it’s only getting started.”

As debate raged, CJ Hobgood appeared on the webcast and spoke on behalf of the surfers.

“I think everyone right now is like I wish we were running heats right now. At least the guys are out there taking advantage. I think everyone on tour lives and loves that they send us out in the biggest best waves.”– Jed Smith

stoked on free surf! all the real surfers ripping out! gudags hobs reef ramon even mick and parko amongst it! no brazzos or small wave hipster surfers!

2.

Dear Stabmag , when Mark Richards stepped up to the plate at the Smirnoff in 75 he knew that those conditions were how reputations were made or lost . Today that scenario presented itself but instaed of taking it by the horns we skulked back to the safety of the Restaurant .

3.

Koby Abberton just left this comment on Stab’s Instagram account: “The 44 world’s best are suddenly looking like the world’s gayest 44. Twenty of em charge but there is 44. That’s Tahiti and now Fiji they have pussed out on!!!! Come on boys you got more skills than every charger in the water. The public seems to be questioning the world’s best.”

4.

That was amazing. Best surfing show ever seen – contest or no contest. How many waves were ridden? How many barrels? More than if there were just two nervous guys sitting out the sets. It was right call. I’m going to buy some Volcom board shorts.

5.

worst call ever. makes zero sense. this is what we all want to see, isn’t it??? best surfers, best waves, small and huge? did they call it off because the sponsors don’t want to risk injuring their precious investments? i want to see these aerialist/technical surfers in big waves. can guys like Medina handle the juice? we won’t know now. horrible call.

    2.

No Brazzos?????? GORDO isnt a Fucking MATE, mate!

      3.

      u wot m8?

    4.

Diego Silva is Brazilian and was amongst the big waves chargers, just ’cause your biased media doesn’t publicize, doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen!!

5.

Slater said it was a good call, we all still had a great show to watch… Good call

6.

The whole surfing world watched in antisipation of what was going to be the greatest day in professional surfing and then, with a sufer getting a 12 ft barrel in the foreground, Matt Wilson calls it off!!!!! you are f%$#@&* kidding .

7.

8.

” Slater said it was a good call” so he,s running the show now is he !!

    9.

slater was out there in the line up… were you?…. he’s the greatest compeditive surfer the asp has ever seen… so yeh his opinion counts for something

    10.

    he always has been

11.

lets do the sensible thing and pack everyone OFF TO TRESTLES !!!

12.

How could it be anything other than a bad call? Look at it! It’s perfect. And spot on with the fact that the swell was predicted and that if you didn’t bring a gun then that’s because you had no intention of going out at this size. A win for the wimps.

13.

14.

Seems like the wrong call for sure, but then again hindsight is a beautiful thing. Either way it better run tomorrow, i wanna see some do-or-die type heroics from all involved.

15.

Gudangs got some heat!

I’m with you Lap, best evers.

Reef and Jons were the best tubes. Damo’s the most entertaining and I would suck Wassel square off.

16.

How often do we get to see the worlds best surfers all in the line-up at once, dropping bomb after bomb after bomb. Definitely the right call for surfing, maybe not for the ASP. With only 2 guys out there, there would of been plenty unridden gems.

17.

Good call for the viewers.
Horrible call for the ASP and world tour surfers (besides those that paddle out). Undermines any status they had as “the best surfers in the best waves.” You’d think after dealing with 3ft+ choppy dumpy Rio a little wind chop in the way of a few perfect 10ft+ barrels would be nothing.
And as for being under-gunned, it’s their own stupid fault and its not is if there isn’t 20+ of the worlds best big wave surfers hanging around they could’ve borrowed a board off.

18.

Great call. It was uncontestable…… That means the competition format didnt suit the conditions. Plus there is such a thing as “the surfers who are in the event.” They also infulence the call. Kieren Perrow stated that it was not suitable. 1 hour heats required to allow two quality waves. There is more factors that influenced the call than the opinion in your Donkey skulls…..

    19.

Were you even watching the stream? Even Wassel was saying that it was better this way cause if the comp was running quality waves would’ve been missed due to their frequency.
This way every decent wave was ridden by the real pro’s.
Non the less there was enough waves for 30-40min heats without any doubt.

    20.

Of course it was contestable. The call was a shame.

    21.

for the record Fitzy , 11 waves were ridden in heat 11 and 8 waves in heat 12 , thats more than an ave heat at bells .

22.

Lame

23.

VOLCOM is back. Fun as shit, cool – not pretentious. Having they’re own spin on things.

Good on em…

    24.

Fucken A! How good is a shirtless Wassel in the commentary booth! Sure does look like a fun time the gang are having!

    25.

VOLCOM is back… and they are sh1tting on good waves and pussifying the tour even more.

26.

Among the 34s Raoni, double J, Gudang and Hobgoods charged, Joel, Kerzy, Mick and Kay got some smaller shoulders. Guess I missed Kelly. Where were the others?

28.

Damo V Kerr. Very touch heat to call. Can we get some odds up?

29.

No Brazzos out there – what a surprise!!!

    30.

Except for Raoni that charged a heavy barrel, besides that, most of them are younger. You did not see the lads from OZ or US, like J Dub, Brett, Owen, Jeremy, Jordy, or even the elders like Ace, Taj…

    31.

GORDO IS BRAZZO, Felipe Cesarano sound portuguese to me.

    32.

Diego Silva, Gordo, Raoni (stopped because he got injured) and many others would’ve ridden those waves if they were there!
I understand the WCT guys that didn’t have a go, there were only so many big boards available and unless you’d have a mate with one… besides, like Kelly and others, it’s one thing to risk dropping if you’re getting paid and another if you’re risking injury before what makes you get paid (heats the next day)…

33.

THAT WAS OFF THE HOOK!!!! ive never seen a better Webcast.. big call, but i think it was more exciting than Teahupoo last year… I was frothing!! good call on calling it off, like it was said above, we got to watch every wave surfed and charged.. so many CT guys would have raced it and not got barrelled at all I reckon…

    34.

Isn’t the point of having a CT at one of the worlds best waves to show case who can and who can’t? Sure there would have been some bombs missed etc but thats always going to happen in a comp.

Does Ramon Novarro get to piss in the trophy?

35.

There were roars from computer screens all round the world today. Would they have been louder if men in lycra were emerging from tubes to scores? Dunno, with the webcast still screening, we kinda got the best of both worlds. But our opinion is flipping left and right.

    36.

I wanna congratulate you on offering a critical commentary on the call made by Volcom to postpone competition. Too regular of late have your posts been half cocked. Today, however, you strayed not away from controversy and joined the forum in questioning Volcom’s questionable call.

    37.

Dear Stabmag , when Mark Richards stepped up to the plate at the Smirnoff in 75 he knew that those conditions were how reputations were made or lost . Today that scenario presented itself but instaed of taking it by the horns we skulked back to the safety of the Restaurant .

39.

who ever wins is like 2nd place any way cause the ASP think the CT guys are all fags and didnt send them out, freesurfers are the winner… they could of done kellys 2 heats at a time so us viewers got to watch more action, in my opinion the BLEW IT big time. we see the ct guys surf everything except for waves like that, I want to see it. Even Chopes last year they should of made the CT guys tow it, why not….

40.

Going to Cloudbreak? Pack a gun. It’s not hard.

41.

The big wave hellman would be frothing on this exposure. Maybe if Todos Santos is 2 foot we can run a ‘CT event there?

42.

shows what us surfers actually care about, quality waves being ridden by the best surfers. we were all winners today, and hopefully dawns a new era in surfing. this was history…live. the asp should be very scared. the future was today.

43.

Anyone who thinks that they made the wrong call today hasn’t seen the forecast for tomorrow. Today we got to see the who is who of big wave paddle in surfers….tomorrow we get to see a contest run in better winds. Satisfied everyone?

44.

The conditions today were so aligned with the Volcom brand. They missed a huge opportunity to run an event that could end up in the history books for being original and extreme. Image the free media they would get just by having multiple footages going viral. It’s about time to have the top 32 (all of them) truly tested. Bring your 9’0 toys next time. Stoked for the free surfers who scored another magical day of big wave surfing. Thanks for the quick report, Jed!

45.

Whether or not holding or not holding the comp was a good call will never be known. Showing the free surf however did what the comp would have anyway – it showed who are really the best surfers in the world and on tour – all the guys on the wct who are charging were out there (slater, florence, parko etc) among the big wave vets who clearly showed who is boss, and then 1ft rippers who would have floundered in the conditions anyway drank apple martinis at the bar watching on whilst these guys got the best waves of there life. Regardless of whether the comp was on – we know who really shows up when its big!

46.

where is the replay button? i need more of that shit. fuck the asp, who cares? i want to see ramon’s barrel again

47.

In order to crown the best surfer of the year, it is obvious now that the tour has to have a big wave event, in a different format of course. Otherwise, the ASP should rename the world champion… world champion under a certain size.
Regarding the call, the waves were good before and after the contest…
Great show from the free surfers, thank you all.

48.

Stop whinging about ASP not running contest in Fiji today. If ya ask me forecast looks insane for the next two days with perfect trade winds and still plenty of swell… Today wind was variable and choppy as fuck. Tomorrow and next day winds are SE perfect offshore and still will be plenty of swell. Few Dickhead calls above.

    49.

no we won’t .. .politically correct clowns like you fall in line.. and contribute nothing to the world. no innovation, just mindless appeasement.

50.

Loved watching the freesurfing. Would’ve been great to see the comp on but the worst thing would be if someone like Damo hobgood lost to Medina in a later round cause they’ve waited for 4ft restaurants instead of 12ft cloudbreak. If you weren’t out this arvo or tomorrow morning at CB you don’t deserve to win.

    51.

thats it Samgreen ! it cant be a level playing field for competitors now this decision has been made . the ASP have sent out a clear statement today that the size of the surf is a critical part of ther desicion making process . If those waves were as bad as Wison described why is the entire surfing community going nuts over the limited footage that is leaking onto sites now .

52.

Guys, get the inflatable wet suit for tomorow.

53.

The same for sex, size is not the only thing that matters

54.

Great call. It was a better show watching a bunch of guys rather then 2 in the lineup. Imagine all the waves they would have missed. And the big wave guys are better then pros in big waves. Thats what they do.

55.

I agree that, based on the current format and systems in place by the ASP, they made the right call. Everybody won today… the freesurfers who went there just for this swell, the WCT guys who wanted to take it on, the viewers who still got to see an awesome webcast, the sponsors who’ll benefit from some amazing freesurfing vision being broadcast with their logo on it, and (most unfortunately) the wussy WCT guys who didn’t want to have a crack and got let off the hook.

While today the right call was made, *based on the current ASP format* what it did prove is that there needs to be some serious re-thinking of the ASP formats and rules. There should be more flexibility to best take advantage of the surf on offer. Imagine if the contest organisers had a number of different format options to choose from? Imagine if today they had the option of employing 8-man, hour long, “Eddie” style heats. Each guy surfs four heats, best two waves of the day count, and the scores are added up… guys with the highest totals at days end progress to the next round.

There’s plenty of other formats that could be called upon should the need arise – Kelly’s overlapping heats being an obvious one alreaady in use. Four-man WQS heats could allow contests to be cut down to 1-2 days if a forecast is not co-operating. Round-robin style formats can make a fairer playing field when the surf is lully, inconsistent, or varying a lot throughout the day. “Skins” style events could make best use of perfect surf – lots of guys per heat, when they catch a wave they want to be scored, they paddle in and tell the judges to score it. After they’ve paddled in they can’t change their mind and can’t paddle back out that way the surfers themselves can set the performance scale, rather than letting the judges do it.

If the contest organisers had the freedom to choose between a number of formats for any given round, (with man-on-man always used for quarters onwards) then it would allow much better use of whatever conditions are on offer, and fairer opportunities when the conditions are challenging or marginal. What other formats do you think could be employed?

    56.

Good observations here… bozo, I think you pretty much rounded up all the really good ideas for adaptive formats. I had similar thoughts, despite being a whiner in one of the first comments. The ASP needs to have flexible formats for situations like this. If Kelly is calling these some of the best waves he’s ever seen…and they aren’t running a contest…there’s something not right there. The ASP loses credibility when they can’t be flexible for these conditions. Surfers who aren’t prepared just have to suck it up.

On a side note….remember last year when JBay was crappy and a team of insane chargers were scoring perfect/huge Cloudbreak? There were a few smart-alecks remarking that Kelly ‘won’ just by picking to be in the best spot where the best waves/best rides were going down (and we have yet to see the footage of Kelly’s waves from that legendary session…).

Also, I agree with all the comments about the WCT pussies who didn’t free surf. Whoever didn’t charge yesterday shouldn’t consider themselves one of the best in the world. Those who did charge demonstrate they don’t need scores to prove that they are the elite.

Isn’t the motto for the dream tour: “Best Surfers, Best Waves”? Considering yesterday’s display, the “Best Surfers” part of the motto is up for debate… The “Best Waves” part is undeniable.

57.

Today was a victory for pussies behind their laptops calling pro surfers gay for not surfing 20 foot death kegs. Everyone got their money’s worth in the end, why the endless whining?

58.

meow

59.

this just proves why the world tour of surfing is a crock of shit. the best surfers in the world arnt necessarily the ones that are winning comps

60.

The contest director made the right choice to call off the event today. 50 or so of the best freesurfers from around the globe traveled from far and wide to surf these waves, and its better to let them push the limits than watch an under-gunned Adriano shoulder hopping.

61.

The best surfer in the world is not the one able to go in the biggest waves. I don’t want the ASP turning into a big wave tour. Big waves surfing is great, but I’m not into it for a contest. It’s great in a video, but when it comes to competition, I’d prefer a 6 to 8 ft barreling wave with the ability to do turns.
In huge waves, experience is the #1 issue. If JJF is able to catch huge waves, that’s because he lives in Hawaii, but for most of the guys, aussies and yanks alike, it’s not that easy to be able to catch 15 ft waves. You need experience and time.
I won’t call a guy a pussy because he does not want to die for surfing.
I’d like the contest to run in a 6/8 ft Restaurant, it’s a gnarly wave also, with plenty of things to do, not only a death drop, and it will tell us who’s the best in the contest.

62.

I was a little confused as to why Mitch Coleborn wasn’t paddling his little heart out: hyped wildcard, his big chance to prove he can surf big waves, face of Volcom and plucked by Volcom, big opportunity handed to him which he passed on. if you wanna prove yourself you gotta charge even if you can do wicked airs

63.

Big disappointment in the WCT decision ask Mark Richards why….respect to Raoni and to those free surf and put up a show

64.

I want more Dane Reynolds.

    65.

yeah, you want more Dane…buy a big poster of him, buy a dildo, rip out the crotch in the photo, insert the dildo on the wall, and you have as much as you want.

66.

Sheesh those guys absolutely charged! Good job boys. I guess you won’t hear an ASP World tour surfer complain about getting no waves for a while – especially since the majority of them were not out there. You hear CJ saying that all the world tour surfers would love to surf out there, but most of them were on the beach??

67.

everybody on this lame discussion is fagget.

    68.

but you couldnt resist either big fella. at least bring something to the conversation. faggett

    69.

ur a faggett, i saw you chomping on dave stand over me .. stansfield’s lala

    70.

FORA HAOLE!

71.

Only saw the first heat, was very time consuming. Liked to see How The guys handled that sort of wave. But sounds like right call made or perhaps if the format were more flexible it would have been epic.
Ps sitting in the lineup and watching a webcast are two different things , this shit takes guts, experience and commitment.

72.

Raoni representing!

73.

Good call. How many guns are necessary to fish the contest? They can break a board or 2 every heat. How many injuries can it cause? It’s easier to say on the computer…

    74.

    *to finish the contest?

75.

All of the core media is failing to highlight Ian Walsh’s wave… on my perspective is on par with Ramon’s wave.

76.

Great call…..the free surf live footage was better than 2 man heats for sure! Thanks Volcom for that.

77.

NUMBSKULLS FOR NOTRUNNING…….

78.

Dana White, would you mind running the ASP for a couple of years. I bet all the top 32 would be in the water yesterday, under your command. Tired of the same thing.

79.

i don’t think they could have cleared the lineup, the real men wouldn’t be listening to the asp… “aaa can you guys please leave the water while we run our contest…”" pffft those guys had one thing in mind… ‘have’ one thing in mind and they aren’t about to let the sell-out tour into their heads or space while the best session in the history of surfing is going down… don’t blame the asp they had no say in it.

80.

The irony for me is that the guy who got one of the heaviest waves – 3 tube sections, including a Shishkebabs end section deathpit – is a Tavvy boat guy. Jensen Hassett. Radicchio-sized nuts.

Must be a little humiliating if you wear a contest jersey today and you weren’t out there yesterday.

81.

thank god , more coke just arrived!

82.

i know the consensus is that ‘surfing was the winner on the day”, – but WTF?!

- surely the world champ needs to be adept at ripping 3ft beachies AND laying it on the line. In my mind the worlds best surfer should be able to do it all, i repeat WORLD CHAMPION?????????????
- otherwise its a farce
fu

83.

WORST CALL EVER

84.

SEND EVERYONE BACK HOME, THE SWELL’S OVER!

THE PRIZE MONEY SHOULD GO TO THE GUYS THAT WERE OUT AT CLOUDBREAK.

I M NOT WATCHING THE GROMS COMP AT RESTAURANTS

85.

I dont think they had a choice anyway!! Healey, Navarro and so on would be out there anyway (I hope!) From this time on, surfers for me are Navarro, Healey, Reef and etc… And what about John John??? The kid is amazing ten times!!! cant wait to see the videos of this epic moment!!! and, thanks RAONI MONTEIRO, at least one brazilian is brave!!! I think a big waves competition has just arrived to the world! Yeah, its hard to predict, but when it happens it is the most amazing thing that you can watch!!! GREAT!!! and for me the wave of the day from what ive seen so far was from Navarro!!!

    86.

Carlos Burle of Brazil crowned as first Big Wave World Tour champion, remenber that?

    87.

Danilo Couto was there, and I think Gordo Cesarano too.

88.

this is really pathetic.. why would all the pros show up … not to surf..

in other words, why wasn’t there any planning? they should have known better. volcom has egg all over their face.

you are not going to “educate” me further on why the contest was called off. poor preparation by volcom, or actually no preparation…

quit expecting viewers to believe volcom corporation… words

89.

gotta be the last hurrah for stuggling volcom. they had an unbeleivable shot at the greatest contest call ever, and they kooked out.

    90.

most of us were stoked now we are like who are these guys?
notice how volcom’s team, never said a word about it.\
its as though the company knew of the backlash. abberton addressed a certain volcom member, yet no one said a word. there is more to this story, but no one is really investigating. who is actually making these calls .. the top 5 guys… who? some dude that hosts airshows and sandcastle contests from Newport ? what is going on here?

      91.

the wrap up of the event was alex gray and bro crew frothing “BEST CONTESTTT POSSIBLLE” no mention of miscall. yes a miscall. look at the freaking video WHILE MARK WILSON CALLED IT OFF. what kooks. volcom should have their next contest at a wavepool

92.

volcom=boring

93.

Volcom could have chartered a jet to bring in thirty two pat rawson guns so no pro had an excuse not to go out. Biggest marketing mistake in surfing history not to run it. While motocross and skating raise the bar for every x game the asp and pro surfing lowers the bar. It really is a dream tour now. You get paid, you get laid but you don’t have to take any real risks. Kalani David, at 14 years old, takes heavier chances in the vans protec pool contest than the whole asp? Half the top 32 should just resign and stick to instagramming photos of hipster parties.

94.

here’s the real story…

all of these corporate idiots hold a “FINAL OF SURFING” in 2 foot Huntington Slop and celebrated them… BUT

THESE SAME CORPORATE THUGS REFUSE TO ACTUALLY DEMONSTRATE ANY THINKING BEYOND THE TYPICAL – APPEASE & EXCUSE MENTALITY.

oh, my volcom, the wind… how terrible..

as the larger waves were being ridden, PEOPLE IN THE COMMENTARY BOX DESCRIBED IT AS PERFECT… PERFECT…

no excuse.

95.

I agree marketing gold a gift from the gods, squandered, terrible decision for volcom if they had the choice to run it. Massive damage to the brands credibility.

96.

You were all saying good things about volcom because they paid for one of the greatest event of the year, and now you shit on them because of that particular day…In fact, we don’t know how things happened, who decided what and why. You must wait before accusing and telling shit. I won’t thank volcom for nothing, they’re not doing anything to please me but to make money, but I had much more fun watching this comp than the two australian events and Rio! That’s enough for me! I want more comps in great wave, even with poor handling and glitches in the webcast! I prefer a shitty webcast or no live at all than watching Rio or Bells in HD!

97.

I must say it was disappointing not to see the top 32 take on those waves , cause those 2 heats of round 2 were fucken exciting to watch and i was pumped for round 3. Then they called it off cause a better swell was coming or something, better winds or something? um.. no… it was the best day of the year wasn’t it- idiots .. put them out there …. there would have been injuries, most sports have them . There would have been lulls most heats have them, but it would have been epic . I heard Julian’s mum was threatening the tour with legal action if something happened to her meal ticket or was it Jordy’s dad?. Sure wasn’t Jon Jon’s mum i asked her this morning in bed.

98.

watched the full broadcast… CJ had just got what was a 10 point ride a few minutes prior to call-off, and it was GETTING BETTER EVERY MINUTE. Surfers were taking off on every single wave, pullin in and out of incredible barrels. And ironically, while Mark Wilson was ranting about how bad it was, there were live clips of mind boggling perfection, only to become all-time perfection minutes later …First contest ever was at Pipe -no leashes, no jet skis. Look how far we’ve come. Backwards. ASP is a disgrace. Mark Wilson such a fit there he’ll prob get the promo. Thank you for the decent surf jouralism -finally.

Mark Wilson and everyone who agrees with him should start a wavepool tour. I watched every heat of the contest and my favorite ones by far were the two heats on the big day. And I’m in no way a big wave fanatic, but these are perfect RIPPABLE big waves with barrels.
