But, what does this new tour look like?

It’s hard to get a decent read on what the new ASP and ZoSea partnership for the world tour looks like. And, today’s press release packs all the ambiguity that goes with these kinda deals. “The supporters of the sport have sacrificed a lot of time and energy into professional surfing, and it has brought us to our current position where we’re attractive to a larger market with the ability to take surfing to a whole new level,” says surfer’s rep Kieren Perrow. “Everyone, from the surfers to the fans to the events to the sport will benefit, and it’s an exciting time for the ASP.”

The release continues: “Designed to enhance the organizational structure of the sport as well as the direction of professional surfing in the coming years. This measure enjoys the comprehensive support of surfers, events, staff and ASP Board Members.”

It seems simple from afar. The buoyancy of the pre-2008 surf industry is long gone and the number of events on tour is looking shaky (we’ve lost New York, Jeffreys Bay and the Rip Curl Search event in the last 12 months). Less events on tour takes quite the shine off what pro surfing stands for. Then comes in a slick operator like Terry Hardy with a vision and the know-how. In 2009, with Kelly by his side in support, he talks of a rebel super tour: more cash, less surfers and an alignment with ESPN. Rapid changes ensue in the ASP (the number of surfers on tour is cut in following years and prize money is lit up significantly). He then acquires the management of John John Florence early 2012. All of a sudden, Tez has all the power in the world: he has two of the world’s three most powerful surfers on his books (he just needs Dane for the absolute Power Triumvirate). Without Dane, and then losing KS and John from the tour, your desire to tune into webcasts in the middle of the night is gone.

I guess what we’re all hoping for is a real read on what the wash-up will be? The definitive answers to what we all want to know: how many surfers will be on tour? Will there be new events? Will there  be a unified webcast that travels the world? What new sponsors are potentially out there and what kinda cash will surfers be fighting for? And, most important of all, will Rosy Hodge still be on the beach doing post-heat interviews?

The reason the surf tour runs over 11 months is that every location has a prime season – holding the events in their prime season is what made the dream tour what it was. There’s also a few traditions (the tour starts in Aus & finishes in Hawaii, WQS events happen before WCT events in most regions eg Burleigh Pro before Snapper, Triple Crown in Hawaii, US Open before Trestles) as well as rules (WCT events can’t overlap with Prime events) which combined make the tour a scheduling nightmare.

Bells deserves it’s place on tour. It showcases the surfers abilities to read a wave properly and to use their rails properly. It ensures that the World Champion at the end of the year is a fully rounded surfer, not just someone who can punt or ride the barrel. If you find Bells boring, don’t blame the wave, blame the current generation of surfers who have forgotten how to surf on rail. John John is the exception amongst the younger gaurd – he made Bells look like a playground. Bells also suffers from it’s Easter timeslot – in years when it runs earlier in the year, it is usually crap, when Easter is later it usually pumps.

I agree a shorter season would make things more interesting though. It might also attract more attentoin from guys like Dane who could do 6 months competing and then play piano and paint self portraits of whatever it is he does for the rest of the year. How cool would it be to see a shortened tour – Kicking off in Europe in January, when it’s fucken cold but pumps, then Pipe in February, with Snapper and Bells both being later in the year (April/May) to deliver better waves, then Fiji/Tahiti in June, Indo & Jbay in July, and wrapping it all up at Trestles in early August. Then most of the Primes can be bunched up through the back half of the year in Europe, California and Hawaii, giving those WCT guys who don’t make the cut a chance to requalify. The other primes (Brazil & WA) can slot into the gap between Pipe and Snapper. The triple crown would also become better because everyone can enter Pipe (Assuming the Volcom Pro and Pipe Masters simply switched times slots), not just WCT guys, so it would become more of stand alone series, rather than a World Title contenders consolation prize.

so true about rosy! she has the most delicious cans.

4.

Sean Doherty,Pete Mel, Pots and Ronnie Blakey for a permanent commentator spot. Joe Turpel needs to find another gig, I’m sorry. Throw in Alex Grey, Dooma, Occy from time to time to spice things up. Maybe Paul Fisher during the Jadson Andre vs Bede Durbridge heats. Sage Erickson, I don’t know if she is into commentary but we should give her a job too.

We want Rosy.
We want photos.
We want videos.
STAB, get to work on this immediately.

Well, left to its own devices the ‘Surf Industry’ cannot pull it on its own. The whole point is that left to the disparate interests of the different companies, the Tour is floundering in unsustainable, selfish promotion. Different commentators, webcasts, agendas, etc. crate a mishmash of half assed presentation. The truth is that a unified entity in needed for the rights to keep comps like JBay, and the Search on the schedule. The very same companies that were founded as a way to make money off of surfing and its lifestyle now are unable to afford the monster they have created, and somehow the rights need to be leveraged to put on the Tour as it should be. Hopefully it will maintain what makes surfing great, and will not become a big bloated corporate entity. Whatever the case, it will be great to see brown nosing fuck wits like GT gone from the booth, the ability to add up points of champions be consistent, and iconic events that will be maintained. That is IF that all happens. The only people to blame if it doesn’t are the people that wanted to sell surfing to make money in the first place.

9.

Rosy’s adorable jugs for ASP PRESIDENT.

10.

Rosies hot..she also the lamest post heat interviewer ever. Dooma’s better, peter mell is actually pretty good. Let’s hope the new tour steps the game up.

11.

To the gooses psyching on Rosie, stab was not paying her a compliment. quite the opposite. She’s PAINFUL!

    12.

HAHAH buddy I do not think they were listening to her as much as staring at her tits Deeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr goose

13.

Rosy wont have trouble finding’work’ if shes wants it..

    15.

    KELLY IS THE BEST COMMENTATOR

      16.

*honesty, confidence, AND expertise to commentate

17.

Fire Joe Twerp.

18.

as long as i dont have to view another post heat interview from GT or peter king, all will be right with the universe.

    19.

Peter Kind is good guy, but his interviews are like dentistry brah! GT is a haole kook who tries way to hard to be the boy. Does his FB still have him petting a pony? Mahu

20.

put some music on and shut fuck up. anything is better than listen to a bunch of brainless people trying to comment on waves.

alex grey is the king of all hipsters. someone just grab a gun and put him out of his misery already.

    21.

He is, but he want through gnarly shit, and now charges and is down with the Boys. He was a cunt, but now has transcended from LA poof, to legit hardcore. Leave him be. Plenty of clowns to pick on first, he is low on the list.

    22.

    are you kidding me?

23.

as for the tour? sell it to redbull, he us army, any shit…who cares? it’s a fucking demo show. many miles below any other boardsport anyway.

however, dont think anyone would watch it if they start to charge for the broadcast.

24.

The broadcasts are sick to watch, commentators aside. Millions of people watch these things…every comp, and yet they somehow do not pay off? If you charge to watch events, a ton of people will give the ASP the finger, as they should. How about managing your companies right, and develop more profitable and realistic business models for the Industries economic climate? If you charge for webcasts, then Rip Curl, Billabong, and Quick will have not only be mall kook wear, and discount wetties, but half the current viewership will tune in to comps at best.

25.

ASP! Once you get your hands off each others backs in your corporate boardrooms, you should give fans a chance to have input on which commentators they like and those they never want to hear again. Hire the BEST team, not those with insider ties (GT, Turpel) who bring nothing to the table.

26.

i don’t believe the tour should “run” all year long… from Feb. to Dec. is bullshit. maybe something more like May to Dec. it’s too long. drop Bells from the schedule (keep Bells running, just not as a “top” event). if i’m gonna have to pay to watch the webcasts, then i’m on the fence about watching. i’ll probably bitch and moan, but would pay. one thing though, if i’ve got to pay, then the stream better not lag like it usually does.

just today i was watching NBC for a few hours. you know what it was?? i’ll tell you, it was downhill mountain biking from Whistler Canada. Red Bull. so mountain biking can get plenty of air time on one of the big 3, but surfing (the grand daddy of extreme sports) can’t ever be on?? Bull riding, mountain biking, skateboarding comes on almost every saturday. surfing?? not so much.

we’re just not Australia

    27.

You’re kidding, right? Ditch Bells?! Yah, Seppo trog, pissorf.

28.

Fuel Tv in Oz is the answer…..full uninterrupted coverage of all the events….. for no extra charge on the sports channels. Ronnie Blakey and Joe Turpel are the most professional anchor men. Vary the contribution of the old legends and lets get rid of the brand insiders. More objective commentary on when the judges get it wrong….. which is quite often it seems. More music, less chit chat. Never have 3 in the booth. Priority flag and scores needed on screen throughout. Interviews should be superimposed on whats happening in the water.

    29.

tell potter to piss off and put barton lynch back on

    31.

Couldn’t have said it better, and for you cheap pricks who will not pay 50 odd bucks a year to watch all these events with more cams filming 100x better streaming and who knows what else then maybe you need to get a job.
Me I can’t wait to see what will come of this it can only be better.

    32.

Maybe the ASP tards should listen to this guy…..

33.

I smell an over reach in the works. They will get hustled and then the money won’t be there and it will all go back to square. This isn’t NASCAR folks, shit, it isn’t even bass fishing. It’s just not that marketable. Even surfers wouldn’t pay to watch it.

34.

All the commentators suck and are painful to listen to ex ronnie and occy.

35.

Lets hope we never have to see or hear Jake “The F*#cking Snake” Patterson ever again. This guy is another one of those “Tour Hanger Ons” and sucks balls at commentry.
Slide away Jake!

36.

I was hanging out for Rosey’s interviews. Her mussled hair in the morning, interviewing the boys with her cute dimples and amazing boobs.

37.

Fucken oath jake the snake what a fucken boof head he is. fucken painful to listen to and his after heat interviews suck ass. stop hanging on. Beat it. hope quik don’t pay him for that shit that comes out of his mouth.

38.

I hope there isn’t a reduced number of surfers on the new tour, with 45 there was a few boring guys that would never really make heats but 32 at least makes it seem achievable for new guys to crack the tour. I mean if it was reduced by even a few spots John John wouldn’t have gotten on tour when he did and he’s the most talented surfer since Kelly. Obviously it was only a matter of time but if it was reduced to 16 or 20 there would be barely any new blood.

    39.

I wish there were more wildcards

40.

got my alexs mixed up. apologies to alex grey. he’s an ok guy. the one that im planing to to kill is alex knost.

    41.

Ha Ha! Brah, we hate that guy too!

42.

There should be a 30 year age limit on the tour unless your name is Kelly Slater or Taylor Knox. Goodbye Mick the prick and joel the old burner who cant door airs. Actually, bar that. If your name is Joel you shouldn´t be allowed on tour, Mick aint that bad. I would pay money to skip Kieran and Bede´s heats. Maybe we should just ban all Australians from competing.

    43.

Stupid comment you really think parko can’t do airs, mate I was watching Joel doing massive oops and huge frontside no grab hangers at kirra on meaty 5ft sections and this was 10years ago.
Maybe you just like lot’s of flicky airs but me I would like to see waves destroyed and cut to pieces and airs left for meaty sections so they at least look powerful and mean.

    44.

    wanker

45.

A few years ago, Gerr’s commentary was entertaining but knowledgeable. Too busy coaching now? PK’s quick witted and fucking hilarious and doesn’t accept 90% of the lame lazy assed bullshit in post heat interviews. He’ll chafe even Slates. Shane Dorian and Occy belong in there too. Gray and Mel are pretty decent. The rest blow. A couple much worse than others.

46.

Dingo you are a flog. Mick and joel are the top competitors this year. And if they take bells of the tour you would lose 50 years of history. Think about it, have to keep it appealing to all people’s!!

47.

Snake is the best commentator! Rosie is a gem and as long as I dont have to pay to watch the live feed Im good to go! Of course once Kelly is gone, JJ’s heats will be the only one I’ll be tuning into.

    48.

LASERWOLF, You need your head read if think the Snake is the best commentator. Hands down the worst next to GT and Joey.

49.

JJ is a puny hoax with no style

50.

bring barton lynch back into the booth! piss GT off ASAP and get the whole blakey family involved in commentating. id pay for that.

    51.

Too bloody right. Listen to BL’s commentary-you can actually learn something-agreed on RonDog too, Blakey’s a gem to listen to-liked Peter Mel’s commentary too-GT, just wanna’ strangle the bloody dopey imposter-who the fuck is and where did he come from? GO BACK THERE NOW!.

52.

Gerr, Barton, Pottz, Blakey, Peter Mel and Dave Wassell – full timers
Occy, Dorian, Kelly, Fisher, Nick Caroll, Turpel – Part timers
Lewis Samuels, Steve Shearer, Chris Ward, Derek Reilly – Wildcards

GT, Snake, Luke Egan – See ya later

53.

Snake and spenny had me cracking up all day…those guys are a great combo!
Pottz contradicts everyone except Pete Mel so keep them together.

    54.

simon anderson would b the best comentator ever

55.

wonder who told parko he had his jersey on backwards…

56.

Terry Hardy……..the name sounds dodgy…….does anyone know anything about this chancer ?apart from his connections with Kelly………… which could be a liability in this context. The ASP has done all the hard yards to get this far so shouldn’t relinquish the future to some dodgy operator.

57.

How’s Pottz saying Slater needs to start grabbing his rail backhand? Pfffft!

    58.

    Yah, caught that too. Lol.

59.

pottz is a kook

60.

Pottz is a slater ass licker its so annoying. And Jake Patterson..god, how annoying is his voice? piss off the both of ya.

61.

Pottz is a “yes” man… whenever Slater is near, he just goes “yes, yes, yes”….

62.

The likes of Jake Patterson and Occy, make watching and listening to live surfing painful. Occy is on another planet and Jake is a complete moron.
Sal Masekela and Joe Turpel at least have an idea of what is going on and Sal is a legend in action sports commentary! By having Sal as a commentator on a more regular basis would awesome!!
What on earth possessed the tour to include Santa Cruz as an event this year? Why aren’t waves like G-Land, J-Bay, Mexico, WA (Australia) or one of the many high performance waves in Indo not there instead? In addition piss the straight hander in Brazil off.
Let me point out I am well aware these shitty events are on tour because of the spectators they get to them. But surely the revenue gained from spectators at actual events would be far Inferior to the exposure of having an epic event in amazing waves is going to benefit everyone that counts.
It’s time that the likes of Nike and Red Bull start pumping some money into events. If red bull can fund the stratos project, F1 racing and many other epic and costly action sports, imagine the money they could pump into a surfing event. The return may not be quiet the same for them however they do sponsor the athletes, why not sponsor an event?
In summary, the answer is, more money for surfers, more exciting events and less Brazilians on tour, they rip but can’t handle their claims any longer.

Kelly is king!

Boooooom!

    63.

There is no wave in WA, (that locals would be cool with) suitable for a WT event. Sorry, G-land, Mex, jbay sure but not West Oz. Even Margaret River Mainbreak is unsuitable in this day and age.

64.

We need a decent wave pool on tour to take the tour to the next level

    65.

Bloody Hell adzzzy! Do you know anything about surfing? Surfing isn’t about riding a predictable wave, its all about spontaneity, not predictability. Think about what your writing before you say something next time Adzzzy ya bloody hooligan. Your not a brazo are ya?!

66.

For commentators on the new ZoSea WCT tour: Give Derek Hynd and Lewis Samuels a case of Jack, lock them in a bulletproof/enraged-surfer-proof vault, and let them get down to the dirty truth…

67.

Why do joel’s boardshorts have beltloops?

68.

I genuinely enjoy reading on this web site, it contains good content. “The living is a species of the dead and not a very attractive one.” by Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche. Jaclyn http://isawthelightsgodown.tumblr.com
