Billabong Pro Rio – The Floater
This is the second in Billabong’s Rio Pro webisode series, and one that offers the top 32′s opinions on the controversial Owen Wright and Adriano De Souza heat at last year’s event, in which Adriano beat Owen with a floater. Opinions vary on the heat’s outcome and fury and support for both surfers came in equal parts. After a year’s worth of online commentary around the matter, here’s what the competitors themselves thought about the call.

The problem wasn’t his floater, that was a good floater!
It was his backup wave where he did 2 foam climb snaps and the second one he didn’t ride out of it properly. They gave De Souza a 6.0 for that and then I’m not sure exactly which of Owens waves it was, but one of his scores (which he finished with a clean air) he only received a 6.6 for it.
In my opinion there is no way that those 2 waves were only 0.6 apart. Owens should have been a good 2 points better then De Souzas. If that was the case, Owen would have won the heat.
Just sayin…

Owen´s air was an absolute FAKE air. Adriano´s floater was waaaay harder and much more critical, in a wave twice bigger than Owen´s small little left.
i think this kind of conversation is in the same level as this years, mick x slater final at bells. same controversial opinions. owen got it to me, but that was a very well and hard floater executed. slater got it to me, but mick was blastin’. just let it go.
Did adriano do anything before the floater? And that score was bigger than for Owen’s 2 turns and air wave? I can see it was half the size and all but (above) average joe could pull that floater, not sure about the air though. Whatever, as already said, it’s a long time ago.
