Big Wigs blown off at Huntington

Posted 31 Jul 2012, by STABmag

The big players from the World Tour are dropping like flies at the US Open. Former winner, Mick Fanning was one, along with Taylor Knox, Owen Wright, Taj, the Hobgoods and Matt Wilko, who all lost in the waist high conditions at Huntington.

Brazilian world number 18, Miguel Pupo, had no such troubles in the small waves, however, easily progressing with the day’s highest combined total – 18.07 – comprising of some trademark aerials. Australian expat turned Cali resident, Josh Kerr was another standout, racking up a 9.50 for a crisp outside punt and a sizzling inside turn combo.

HAHA that’s laughable bro. I love Kelly, but he is not the best surfer in the world. He is the best CONTEST surfer. On top of that Kelly has said himself that Dane is the best surfer in the world. Your obviously brainwashed by the WCT. Go watch Dane Reynolds “Excerpts”, think about why your wrong, and get back to me. Also try to use complete sentences.

Kelly is without doubt the greatest surfer ever. Dane’s been on the scene for a few years, Kelly over 2 decades as the leading person in the sport in competition and also leading innovation in terms of tricks and board design. His ability to adapt is second to none, at 40 he surfs better than most guys on tour ever have or will, and at 17 he surfed better than most guys on tour ever have or will. Kelly could compete at 3 ft huntington and win, then go win at 30ft waimea.

Dane is an amazing surfer, but not the best surfer to ever set foot on the planet. i think Kellys record speaks for itslef there.

Kelly is better than Dane, and has been doing it for way longer. Period.

Kelly Slater has said himself that Dane Reynolds is the best surfer on the planet. go look it up for yourself. I don’t understand how you can argue this or think you know more than Kelly does. Kelly is amazing and is the best contest surfer ever, but he said that DANE IS THE BEST SURFER IN THE WORLD. Apparently none of you have seen Danes “excerpts” video. Name one video that Kelly has done that even comes close to excerpts? There are none. What are you talking about innovation in tricks and board design? Dane does airs Kelly could never do in his life. Board design has nothing to do with surf ability. Everyone keeps going back to competing, let me say again that Kelly is the best competition surfer ever, but that doesn’t mean he is the best surfer ever. Attrition means nothing.

Wen,s Occy heat ?

Coke adds life. Have some Coke and a smile.

Dane is the best surfer on quite each wave he is riding, but not for more than a second or two. Trouble is he is not consistent. And he is always surfing shit waves.
He is always overscored in comps, but that’s not his fault. Slater is always overscored, and it looks like Medina and JJF will begin to be overscored too.
Dane Reynolds surfs real good, but his results mean nothing since judges aren’t judging him like the others. But Reynolds is not a genious, he is just a good surfer, and it’s boring to hear the anglo saxon media talking about him so much.

Ray nailed it. Dane is inconsistent, and over scored in comps. He could be the greatest surfer ever, but with a piss weak work ethic he will only be able to show flashes of super human brilliance. Who cares if he does comps? He would be an even better all around free surfer if he took conditioning more seriously, and did not have a chest like a skate park. Love it when he goes off, but its embarrassing when, as much skill as he has, he can’t string two turns together.

Dane is very, very good, and he could do it if he wanted. Too bad he isn’t more competitive. Liking Barton Lynch and Dino Andino on the mikes.
