Craig Anderson on winter: “I love checking the charts and seeing offshore mornings for days in a row. I love surfing all morning without eating breakfast, just a coffee to get you on your feet. At home, when you get those north swells stacked to the horizon, and it’s fresh and cold and the skies are blue, it’s such a refreshing change from summer.”

The ugly: Replaced by Quicksilver after 9 months due to separation of neoprene on smooth areas and split seams. Replacement suit started to break apart (seams) after 3! months.
Reasonable choice for weekend surfer? Doesn't last being used regularly (5x a week)

I bought a Matuse Tumo 2/2 full suit.
Positive things are: It is fucking warm, like too warm for the gold coast, even though it is only a 2/2.

It is minimalist with only a couple of small decals on the whole suit.

At first it didn't let in fuck all water (goes back to the previous comment about it being fucking so warm)

Negative things are: What is with the extra gusset that you have on the suit that you have to pull over your head, makes the chest and neck area of the suit super bulky.

On the website claims are made as to the extreme flexibility of the suit. Uh no, I don't think so, it is probably in the medium range of flexibility or less, somewhere around the same as a mid priced rip curl or oneill.

After only three months of use the suit now leaks through the seat stitching.

It takes AGES to dry.

Anyhow, I have recently bought a rip curl flash bomb zip free 2/2 and oh lord of creation, this thing is on another level all together!

I'm originally from the Caribbean and always freezing my ass off, but the R4 is the only wetsuit that keeps me warm for hours in around zero-degree celsius conditions. Maybe not so flex as others and quite an investment, but Patagonia wetsuits will last and still look good after years of abuse with others just deteriorate. Really Patagonia is worth every penny in warmth and durability, plus they really stand for something as a brand and I'm proud to represent them as a consumer.

This past winter was BRUTAL!! Probably the coldest and longest I've seen in 10 years. The suit held it's own. There were probably a few days when the air temp REALLY dropped (water at 1 to 2 celsius and air at -4 celsius) and it would have been much better to have an R4 but it did fine the rest of the time.

Up until I purchased a flashbomb I had always supported a local wetsuit company who made excellent suits, and backed it up with excellent customer support. The only reason I bought it was the price, which was good due to a friend working the till that day. I liked how warm and flexible the FB was, and got two eight month long seasons out of it (surfing about 4 times a week). Up to this point it would get 4 stars as it's been a great suit but had started to come apart in the shoulder seams. After two seasons it was pretty haggard so I sent it in for some warranty repairs (3 years on seams), hoping to get one more winter out of it. I've given it 5 stars as I was sent a brand new suit (upgraded to the latest model FB) and so far the new one has been great. I thrash my suits and to get 4 seasons (if the replacement lasts as long as the first) out of one purchase price is pretty damn good value.

Best feeling suit I've ever put on. Goes on easy, fits well, super light and stretchy, guarantee you'll swear it's the best suit you've ever worn during your first session, but durability is definitely an issue.

These days, I live a bit from the coast so I get to surf weekends and only head out if there are decent looking waves on the buoy. I've had my suit for 3 years, but if I was surfing everyday, even just every week there's still only one season on the suit. I take good care of it, fresh water wash, keep it out of the sun and store it safely, but the silver lining is wearing off, the threads are pulling out, there's a small hole in the rubber, the pocket zipper broke after 5 or 6 sessions and the key band snapped shortly after that.

It's also worth noting that the 5/4/3 is basically all 4/3 with a tiny patch of 5mm on the chest and back. It's warmer than a traditional 4/3, but if the water drops below 50F it gets cold quickly.

I got mine for less than half off, about $250 US, but if I payed full price and surfed everyday, then I would be pretty upset. Basically, if you have the money to get a new $600 suit every few months, you can't beat it, but don't expect it to last for how much you pay.

I have been a team rider for Thermoskin Wetsuits from Argentina for almost three years. Prior to being on Thermoskin, I rode for West Wetsuits from Australia. I can honestly say that Thermoskin wetsuits are the best fitting suit I have even worn. The neck is super soft and even after surfing or spearfishing for hours, I do not have a rash at all. Plus, the suits are double sealed at the seams and are SUPER warm. The Thermoskin "Creed" short-arm full with a chest-entry is my favorite suit in the line; it is super flexible and stretchy and provides me with the warmth I need with the stretch and durability I expect. The suits last forever, and although I get them for free, they are priced well and are a good buy for any surfer looking for a good durable suit that will keep you warm. Thermoskin should definitely be a more popular brand and I'd highly recommend them.

Before this suit I had the E-Bomb Pro+ 3/2 and that suit was cold and only lasted 3 months, but since I got the Xcel Infiniti I have been loving it, its warm and very flexible and has a very comfortable fit, the neoprene is also very strong, no deterioration of the materials, especially over the shoulders. Very easy to get in and out off. The suit also seals and sits very comfortable around the neck and wrist. I even surfed in the same suit in Cape Town on the Indian Ocean side and was very warm. I would definitely recommend this suit to anyone that is looking for a suit that offers everything and more and one that is long lasting. No seams have started to come apart.

I wont wear any other suit again. Its the stretchiest and warmest suit ive ever had by far. Taped seams instead of liquid seams means plenty of flex in the arms. Dries super quick even if its cold so double sessions are easy. A 3/2 at Bells in August was more than enough. The flash lining seems to also stop the suit from blowing out its shape after 1 season too.

Now the seams.. the outside seams had this rubber tapie shit thats now almost completely gone, started to crack within the first year and wasn't that great at keeping the water out in the legs, its still flaking off and the seam near the chest zip/armpit is tearing and has a hole which is getting bigger.

Overall great neoprene which is still warm as.. shit house job on the sealing seams.

Grabbed an O'Neill Psyhco 3 F.U.Z.E and it was a ripper from the get go, literally. Despite being the comfiest and most well shaped wetsuit I have ever worn, something seemed to be wrong with the welds as they all had broken after the first surf, and I'm pretty sure I don't have highly corrosive acid piss well last time I checked anyway. I didn't even piss in my wetsuit that arvo because the damn wetsuit was so warm. Shattered from the sight of disintegrating welds my agony grew following each surf after rashing from the busted seems topping it all off the arm panel has come completely apart and now a rush of cool Victorian water meets my armpit.

Mainly my memories of the psycho 3 were love at first sight. Having a subtle hint of green with its awesome warmth, insane flexibility and considerably fast drying material too bad it resembled a Romeo and Juliet relationship and lasted only 3 weeks. Sent away for replacement the hope of a new psycho surviving more than a month is exciting but I shall see if the seams can withstand pressure better than a pair of star crossed lovers.

O'Neills psycho 3 week suit is incredible just check the expiry date before purchase.

When you get in it, you don't have to feed the zip onto the track, it's already locked in and you just slide the zip across and button it in (it's never come undone either). It's a nightmare trying to get a wet wettie on when it's cold and you're trying to feed the zip together on your chest when the waves are pumping. I'm 6'0 and wear a medium and after a while it feels tight around the shoulders but I think most wetsuits would do that. It still looks brand new. I reckon most wetties are pretty good nowadays. I hear they all come from the same factory anyways.

Super light (when it arrived I thought they'd forgotten to pack it), really comfortable, nicest feeling neoprene (geoprene they call it, it's made from limestone) I've ever felt and dries really fast. I won't be buying any other brand of suit ever again, they're a little pricey but a wetsuit is an important investment!! Pretty true to size, really flexible and so far very durable. I've got my old man on the program and he's a convert too! I surf around Wollongong and found myself letting water in at times last winter because the suit was too warm, keeping in mind it's only a 2mm! Can't sing the praises of the Tumo 2mm steamer high enough.

I also own a Rip Curl E-Bomb 2.2 Spring Suit. Just the perfect fit and stretch. Feels like a second skin. The E-Bomb series will be my priority choice when looking for a new steamer, pending on the price tag.

One thing I don't understand though, is why we have to pay so much for Aussie brand wetsuits when they cost half of the price in the US or in Europe.

I have friends who have the same thing happening with their Hurley suits too . I mean its not an awful suit I just wish they would make them more durable we all aren't pros that get a free one in a box every other month .

After 2 months its hard to rate for durability, but the warmth and flexibility is epic. The material on the inside dries crazy fast too so no cold wet wetty if you want to surf more than once in a day. The first time that I wore the suit it felt slightly tight through the shoulders, but after about 30 minutes of paddling it was spot on.

I like that there is no budget range either! Every suit is fully sealed.

First time that I've tried something different to some of the big name companies and I couldn't be happier!

Plus: super warm wetsuit and super flexible, looks good too.
BIG MINUS: O'Neill wetsuits falls apart, especially on the external chest piece gluing after a month or so.
First time the glue started parting, went to the O'Neill head office to get the wetsuit exchanged, got the spiel that the glue used for that particular batch of wetsuit didn't dry properly.
Second time around, same story given.
Third time around, got told a new batch of wetties just came in and I won't have this problem again.
FOURTH time around, the office guy didn't even bother explaining and gave me my FOURTH wetsuit exchanged.
I'm a loyal customer and have always had my wetties from O'Neil as they've always been really good in the past. However, after this ordeal, never again will I buy O'Neill!
By the way, the fourth wetsuit has started deteriorating as well, only reason I can't get an exchange is because it's been over 12 months since I've bought my original first one so it's not covered anymore by warranty.
If I can discourage even only one person from buying this brand, that'd make me happy. Nothing worse than buying an expensive wetsuit that's touted as one of the best and finding out it's a piece of shit!

Happy wetsuit shopping all!

The geoprene rubber isn't a gimmic. It actaully doesn't let any water in at all and drys super fast and is light. The thing that shit me about the matuse at first was its a chest zip wettie but also has a batwing....... Overkill. Comeon I get the whole not wanting any water to get in your neck but having a batwing under a chest zip is super annoying. I cut it out and the suit feels great now. The tumo series are only gbs and seeming everyone knows the matuse suits are extra tight for there size it would be good to have welded liquid seals for some extra durability when stretching them on. Still. The matuse is super super warm and super super light and a billion times better then some of the other shit on he market

by far the shittest wetsuit i have ever owned. i feel as if I'm a helpless turd floating in the ocean due to the lack flex, comfort and warmth from this terrible wetsuit restricting my every move. the chest zip on it is pure dog shit, not to mention the stitching coming undone after 10 surfs. plus for $500 it didn't make me surf like jordy smith. o'neill can lick my hairy ball sack which is now clad in the new rip curl flash bomb (which feels like I'm wearing nothing at all).

Wetsuit fit great, but fell apart within 3 months, took it back to O'Neill, but because it was bought in a sale, it wasn't cover for warranty. Fell apart in 4 places. Absolute rubbish. Wrote emails and even went to O'neill head office in Brookvale and got walked out the door. Will never ever buy an O'Neill wetsuit again. Second short arm I have owned, the first one fell apart in 6 months, but I just took that on the chin because I surf a lot.

The front zip button worked well and the suit looks brand new. I can't fault the wettie and don't need another this season. I find Quik suits fit smaller than the others.
