Have you ever heard the crunch of a bone as you land a backside air-reverse in a Balinese shorebreak? Or, the sound of six screws being drilled into the fibula you just broke? Or, the sound the metal plate in your ankle makes when you tap it, while you’re watching friends surf? Or, the sound of your first wave after nine weeks’ recovery? Or, the sound of a faint pop in your other ankle, on an awkward landing after only eight weeks back in the soup? And then, finally, the sound of torrential Gold Coast rain outside, as your doctor tells you it’s a grade three tear?
Ryan Callinan knows all these sounds.

I don’t think the point of this video is to complain about his injuries. It gives an insight into a pro surfers ups and downs. Same thing gets documented on all top sportsman. This kid is happy and ain’t whinging.

I’m 19 and just had 3 months out of the water from a shoulder op and it’s a big thing for someone when surfing is a big part of their lives, not to mention the other things it affects. If you hurt yourself I’m sure you’d want someone to be interested and show some sympathy, not just say that there are people who have it worse and be a douche to you.
Seems like everyone is breaking ankles and lower legs. Curious how no one has created a brace to surf with for support in those key areas while doing huge airs.
He’s the happiest kid on earth! This is just his story. Think you’ll find this is more about his mental surfing than having a cry! Can’t wait
