Attack puts Streaky back on the map

Just days after Streaky bay surfer and fisherman, Jeff Schmucker warned of exploding numbers of Great Whites in the waters off Streaky Bay, South Australia, a surfer has been attacked.

A 48 year old man was bitten on the arm at 2.40 pm today while surfing Back Beach, near Streaky Bay – the sixth attack in Australia in the last 12 months. Jeff was on the beach shooting photos when it happened.

“I was shooting three surfers in the water  …  and every time a set came in I’d snap a couple of photos, but then those guys just disappeared,” he said. ”They all went in at once, so that was a little strange.” Upon learning an attack had occurred, Jeff called emergency services.

“He had lacerations on his wetsuit from his hip to his shoulder on his right side,” he said. “The guys  …  said they thought his injuries were possibly life threatening so I  ran back up to call the police back.” The attack backs Jeff’s claim that shark numbers have experienced a huge increase in recent years. “We’re not killing the sharks anymore. We’re not knocking them off. They’re a protected species,” he says.

Jeff, who was formerly a large gill net fisherman before it was outlawed to protect dolphins and sharks, also points out that the practice of blood letting by tuna fishing vessels involved in the annual and ongoing harvest at nearby Port Lincoln is known to lure sharks closer to shore.*

“At the moment in Port Lincoln they’re harvesting 5000 tonnes of Tuna. Blood is going over the side, no food is going over the side. There’s two or three pointers around every processing boat and two or three ships taking tuna back to Japan and three or four pointers around every operation,” he says.

Streaky Bay has long been known for the huge Great Whites, as well as some of the best waves in Australia and the world. At the local petrol station you can stick your head inside the life size model of a 5.2 meter, 1520 kilogram shark, which was caught here in 1990. The catch briefly held the world record for the largest Great White caught by rod and reel, until an investigation found a baby sea lion had been used as bait and the record was stripped.

Until now, Jeff believes an exploding population of fur seals has prevented shark attacks in the area. “The food supply of these pointers is alive and well, which probably gives us some solace surfing, really,” he says.

The last time the waters near Streaky Bay endured a spate of shark attacks was in 2000 when two surfers were killed in a week. Just like today, conditions were small, something Jeff says drastically heightens the chances of being attacked.

“That’s the wrong time to be surfing on this part of the coast I reckon. In my experience you won’t see (Great Whites) when the swell is pumping and there is lots of noise and aerated water. It’s when it’s flat and sharks are coming to pick up dead carcasses hanging around the near shore reefs,” he says. - Jed Smith

As far as I am concerned, I’d prefer to watch a grizzly bear than any guy called “Jeremy”. There is no reason why a guy called Jeremy should be granted the right to share his thoughts with the rest of the world.

There are plenty of reasons for having protected species.
There is an objective reason: to ensure the food chain is not altered in such a way the imbalance could be a danger for the whole chain.
There is a subjective reason: To be the apex predator shouldn’t give you the right to destroy what is below you.
It is not putting animal ahead of human, but every specy have the right to live and to have its own environment.

Yep fuck off hippys people are being eaten alive 20+ years of protection and now we have a lot of fully grown 4m+ fuckers trolling around 10 more years and well be looking at many more.
It”s the only fucker that doesn’t get hunted by man or animal and we protect-it Why??
And if you eat any type off meat do not comment back at me with the gay call about it being there environment or any of that rubbish we eat all the other sharks time to eat this one.

Well, impossible to know that humans could rule when I read your post, it looks like a miracle that the human race survives some centuries, if you’re the one given as an example!

There is no reason sharks should be a protected species. We are the apex predator, we should have the right to kill/eat any animal, unless there is a clear advantage to humans to do otherwise… But there is a huge problem when sharks are protected, and their food, or the food their food relies on, is overfished…

In any case, predator/prey population numbers are inversely related… so at one point the shark population is up, and their prey population is down… if you’re a starving animal, especially in areas where people fish/chum, sadly, the sharks will be more and more desperate.

CA Governor outlawed shark fin soup… I hope we don’t see a similar trend in CA. Can’t stand the freaking hippies… “we’re in theirrrr enviornmenttt”… well we also used to have grizzly bears, black bears, and mountain lions in our backyards but now they’re gone, and if one is seen, it is killed or relocated. Sickening people put animals ahead of human.

like i said, i’m not saying we’re apex as a pride thing… i’m saying we are apex… WE EAT, and overfish, everything the shark does… if you want to protect sea lions and say we need sharks to kill sea lions so they don’t overpopulate, that’s just snobbery. hippie. and i say that in the most derogatory fashion possible

the problem is, as stated by jeremy, that we have already screwed the food chain by overfishing animals further down the food chain from sharks, causing them to seek other food sources – one of them being us. if you want to protect a species, why not all of them?! because protecting some and not others also upsets the equilibrium within the ecosystem. how many domesticated dogs have been put down because someone’s been bitten (not even fatal)???

    11.

    Your an idiot dude.

A baby sea lion, really???!!! cruel.

23.

in mexico wasnt it illigal fishing and the illegal dumping of a net full of fish that attracted sharks that killed a couple of guys? sometimes the variables add up. sounds like maybe surfing is off during the tuna harvi.
whoo i just read the sea lion as bait bit! wow thats hard core. fuck anyone who is into that shit.

24.

Is it because they’re protected or is it that the water temp is so low during winter that they travel closer to shore?

25.

Everybody should do like Doc Paskowitz and go out there in the ocean with no problem being eaten alive. That’s what they call a “good death”. Manly. Honorable. Like the times when we used to live in caves. And the chances are so low, it’s literally like winning the lottery. It’s way easier to die when you’re driving to the beach. Aussies are just becoming soft these days. That picture is way too scary though.

26.

If you have large white Sharks at your local spot making surfing risky, I suggest Locals quietly dispatch them.
Its the same issue with huge Crocs up North, Local boat ramps are not so safe when Dinosaurs are lurking in the muddy waters.
Locals must be proactive about safeguarding their lives and enjoyment of the Ocean.
The Politicians granted the White Sharks and Crocs sanctuary, I dont believe their decisions factored in the grisly deaths of Local Surfers or other Ocean users when they put pen to paper.
I cannot imagine a more horrible death than dying in the jaws of a White Pointer, so i say knock a few of the bigger ones off in a quiet fashion for Humanitarian reasons.
There is no need for anyone in Canberra to know about it.

Well…at least the number 1 spot for shark bites is not New Smyrna Beach again this year. We’ve dealt with this for so long that I honestly don’t think that anyone who willing enters the water really cares. We respect them as we can and if we get bit, then it’s on us, we were in on their session…

28.

is that a prosthetic shark?

29.

Kill em all . We eat their food they eat us….. And so on and so on.

You gotta put the fear of man back in these beasts.
