And now, here’s your Rip Curl Pro, Portugal Quarterfinalists

So much! So much happened today in Portugal! The Rip Curl Pro ran the remainder of round three, round four and round five (but for the last heat). And, the biggest upset? Kelly Slater, eliminated by Raoni Monteiro in round three. “That was a key heat,” said Kelly. “It’s that round you really want to get through because there are so many more points on offer for the next round. When you start throwing stuff away, the problem is that I’m going to be carrying a 13th now. It’s just the way it is, and maybe it will make for a better finish to the year. It could become exciting. I’m kind of sneakily up there at the top with the wins, but I was carrying a couple bad results already and now I’m definitely going to be carrying one of those three by the end of the year. It’s a little frustrating, but it might make it more interesting in the long run. Joel, Mick and John John are really good in these conditions. John John is super sneaky in these kind of waves, and I expect Mick to find his waves also.”

Kelly’s extraction from the contest makes the title race much brighter for Joel Parkinson, who’s currently world number one but could feel Kelly coming for him. “Even though he’s in second on the ratings and he’s out of the event, we have a little bit of work to do in front of us,” said joel. “It definitely tightens up the race a little. I guess doing that might bring it down to Pipe. I think it’s time for me to win another event though. It’s been far too long. Hopefully I’ve been keeping it for the right time.”

Don’t miss the business end of this event. It’s gonna be excellent, as you’ll see from the quarters match-ups below.

Oh, and we’ll be chopping any racist commentary below, so play nice.

Going by the adjusted point total (two lowest scores dropped), Kelly has 44,950, and Mick has 43,500. Assuming Joel wins the event, he will have exactly 47,000 points. Assuming John John wins, he will have 43,400. Regardless the outcome of this event, the title race should prove to be epic.

Also, I highly encourage anyone to double check my math because I certainly wouldn’t trust anyone who willingly calls himself Marsh the Darsh.

This event is such crap. The wave shape is not there as far as a professional event. Not sure what the thinking was to not include J-Bay and to include this crap stall. Remember that spot in Mexico that Rip Curl did for the Search….maybe the new tour could select some better spots. Owen is just owning it. Obviously, these guys make it look easy. But the wave itself is just fickle. J Boy G paddled out this morning and gave me a “Shaka..” I was pretty stoked. I showed him my left nut. He got amped. We were frothing over the big sets that came in. GT and Joe Twerp joined me after the session as we went to a nail salon and jewelry store. So stoked. We proceeded to a surf shop to buy some 300 dollar Hurley Boardshorts. Its 200 dollars to make that big H. Ace Buchanan stopped by. I said Ace, you need to change your name to Buchanan.. it just makes sense. GT agreed. GT, Joe twerp, and I then paddled out together at Peniche. I did a big wrap around quesidiilla air. ADS was stoked. He pooh stance grab rail cuttied me a “shaka”. After the session, we all wore extremely tight jeans hugging our nuts and busted out a PBR aka DANE REYNOLDS bros… we chilled and drank like dank superstars. I was a hero. Kelly showed up and I rubbed his gleaming skull for luck.

Go Raoni! Fuck up the standings and take that fat paycheck! Pitiful Portugal, wqs crap this year.

4.

HOW THE FECK IS J-BAY NOT ON THE WORLD TOUR ANYMORE?!?! How much better would this comp be to watch if it was being held a J-Bay????

5.

So bullshit that JJ and joel are matched up in quarters, they should reseed after round 5!
kelly and mick will be stoked they are matched up though..Joel needs to finish 2nd or better to take the ratings lead off kelly (when dropping their 2 worst results). Going to be an exciting end to the tour!

Go Parko!!

    2.

    congrats to jules.
just want to make a statement here.
julian was overscored at his last wave. it’s a fucking shame but it’s the truth.
    medina won this comp.
glad this thing will be decided at hawaii.

Joel’s licking his lips

4.

Stoked they caught that board burglar fuck! Check the Sardine ‘zine (no.8) thing on the event website for the rundown. There’s even a lil snipe vid!

Sounds like you had a wild morning.

    9.

    you’ve lost it

10.

How are JJ and Joel together? Youd think the seeding would be such that seed 1 and 4 wouldn’t meet in the quarters … Stupid round 4

    11.

How are they together? They were married last year in San Francisco. Jon Jon Parkinson.

The race is sick, the events are not. Say what you will, but France and Portugal are below average bathtub wakes compared to Jbay, Arica, Barra, etc. Great place for the competitors and hangers on to get their willies wet, while spending heaps of cash on lay days while guys sit around…oh wait, they are having massive money problems, so they would never do that! Maybe that kind of business plan is why you are going bankrupt. You cry poor, but spend a million sitting and waiting on fickle breaks that suck more days than not. You shouldn’t get rid of the European events or Brazil, but when the new entity takes over the ASP, a Dream Tour sure as hell better have dream spots. Some obvious ideas: Rincon, Reunion Island, Indo (anywhere), elevate another of the Hawaiian events, any Mexican point break, etc.

    13.

    TRUE

    14.

Yeah but where do stop?and unfortunately, I don’t know if you know, but nowhere pumps all the time, everywhere has small/flat days. Good surf, especially during an allotted period of time can never be 100 per cent guaranteed.
