Alex and Koa Smith in El Salvador
Coconuts, horses, lightning and dreamy waves. That’s what Alex and Koa Smith found in El Salvador. “We drive, twisting through the jungle – all sense of direction lost,” says Alex. “No service. We pull into Punta Roca, a right hand point break. Weʻre here to surf a contest. Koa and I both lose, then drown our sorrows with ice cold coconuts and fresh fish. Food poisoning sets in, double vision. Hitch hikers with machetes, avoid any eye contact. Paranoia sets in, sure weʻve watched too much “GangLand” on History Channel.
“The pearly white gates open, an AK-47 bearing guard welcomes us with a smile. An oasis of life inside, we peer through a tropical forest – a lonely beach break spits in both directions. We retire to the villa, equipped with pools and maids; our safe house. The clouds turn black, swirl and rumble. Itʻs 4th of July, a bolt of lightning slashes through the clouds and exploding a power line to oblivion. Air conditioning stops – we sleep and our sheets soak in our sweat and a feeling of helplessness. We drive toward the airport with fingers crossed, not uncrossed till we exit the plane in Los Angeles. #6 has a valid point about #4. intros to surf clips have become really repetitive. To all editors/producers/filmers: stop trying to copy kai neville and riley blakeway. Have your own steez
A couple too many local color shots, but it wasn’t a bad shoot or edit. All their clips could use more surfing because those guys rip. If the surfing sucked that video would still be watchable.
Alex has the best front side pop up on a late drop in surfing. I like it better than Kelly’s or anyone else. See him surf in person someday and judge for yourself. He just doesn’t catch water anywhere on that move and it looks brilliant. His frontside and backside take off in the barrel is pretty good too, and his top turn is world class but he needs to do different kinds of snaps. He gets long waves and he’s nice too.

I hate the fuckin minute long pre surf collage, its fuckin lame, waste of time. Everyone is doing it and its fuking boring, I dont want to see that shit, Iwant to see surfing, nothing else
