A brief conversation with Julian Wilson

Determination burns behind Julian Wilson’s eyes. But right now, those eyes water in the wind of a howling La Graviere onshore. It’s overcast, windy, 10 feet and miserable. The beauty of the French WT event, however, is in the unpredictability of it all. Windblown and 10 feet today, sheet glass and six feet tomorrow. And Julian loves the challenge of it. His competitiveness saw him win the US Open of Surfing last month, but more pertinently it saw him into the final of last year’s Quik Pro, France. And it isn’t crazy to imagine a similar scenario this year. So, just what exactly is going on behind those eyes, right now in Hossegor…

Stab: What clubs have you got in your bag for France?
Julian: I’ve got six Mayhems and six JS for this European leg. The sizes don’t really vary too much, I’ve got a Mayhem fish, and my biggest board’s a 6’3″, then my shorties are all around 6’0″.

Reckon the fans (see also: gals) dig Jules? The ones at Lowers sure do.

But, is France the kinda place where you need bigger backup? Not necessarily, no. It all just depends. I’ve got some shortboards that are quad fin setup and have more thickness to them, which I’d ride in bigger waves. It seems like a lot of the longer board stuff is coming back to getting a lot shorter. Just through what Kelly’s been doing and… people aren’t necessarily travelling with four or five step-ups anymore. It’s more like, keeping it around the shortboard range, but with a little more thickness or rocker, or a different fin setup.

Is it easier coming back to somewhere you’ve done well before, or harder? I think it’s definitely a good thing coming back to somewhere you’ve done well, because you know that you can actually do well at that place. France is a really fun event, because due to conditions, you can surf five different heats on five different boards. I like the fact that you’ve kinda gotta pick a board to suit whatever the waves are like, and trust it. I try to ride just one or two boards in an event, but last year in France I rode four different boards in the contest. The conditions can change every hour, depending on tide and wind. But that makes it a really fun event and it’s cool to see how everyone adapts to the waves.

Who are the guys to watch at this event? I think from past results, and especially due to the nature of the waves in France, I’d definitely say Mick and Kelly. They always know how to adapt and they have that belief in themselves to go and ride new boards or whatever in heats. Those guys have proven that they’re pretty deadly out there, they’ve both won the event. They’re the two strongest that stand out right now to me, for sure.

Hey, Julian… maybe you should talk about Medina in your choices… The kid just smoke you last year in the final, forgot about it???

Good call Steven i used to follow the comments for the critical discussion about surfers ability, strenghts and weaknesses not for the juvenile right offs and patriotism.

spitball and aquaba are actually pretty spot on and far from pests. generally their comments are of quality substance. i dont mean to brown nose but atleast they are on topic. more comments disecting surfing and less writing others off on the basis of a name will ensure i am much more enthuised to read to the bottom of a stab comments feed. julian will compete well in france but i think JJF will win. He seems so at one with the ocean regardless of conditions, allowing him to summon waves and proceed to destroy them with his varying arsenal. only time will tell.

I wrote off Julia last year and while the mamas boy primadonna thouroughbred entitlement attitude is still there he has matured a fair bit. And he has talent to burn. The big problem is that he is still surfing individual heats against his opponents and that is a losers contest strategy. Winners focus on event rhythm, pacing their performance and their own surfing. They keep a certain level of detachment from their opponent. Owen was the perfect example of this last year but now he is surfing heats instead of contests again. Medina and John have also cracked the code a few times. Julias win will come soon but often a lack of confidence still shines from those bright eyes.

Don’t think Julian has ever really had an entitlement attitude.

More like A) He’s gotten screwed royally by the judges in several “make it or break it” heats. And been rightly emotional about it.
B) He’s realllly driven to win. He’s by far one of the top 5 on tour but I imagine way in the back of his mind he has a fear his destiny is that of… Cheyne Horan.

IMHO he’s the most exciting to watch right now – and a good part of that is because of his drive, which reminds me of Fanning years back. Highly competitive attitudes make competition exciting.

Hey mate go to surfline.com they have just put up pics of KELLYS 1-50WCT WINS which include kellys 3wins in France.

Julian will never win a world title. He’s good to watch but won’t be able to put a whole year together. This contest is wide open because you never know what conditions you’re getting day to day. I can’t see anyone other than Kelly or Mick winning the title this year and then JJF and Medina over the next few years. Which sucks because I’m Aussie but there are no young Aussie contenders. I hope John John wins this comp and the title this year but it will probably be Kelly in the end. Julian should watch the JJF clip next to this article and then he will realise that JJF is special and he (Julian) will only ever be just another member of the WT top ten (just like Jordy, Owen et al).

Parko has made the last two finals, why isn’t anyone considering him a threat?

17.

Kelly hasn’t won the Quiksilver Pro in France so I think it is time he made his sponsors happy by drowning the wine drinking French monkey on his back.

    18.

He has won WCT events in France. But if your getting technical and need him to have won when the comps management is run by Quiky then no he hasn’t.
3win in France is the reality and if you need your memory checked surfline.com has a Kelly Slater 1-50 win article up today.

Never say never ladies. The boy (just 23) has the ability, berries & drive to be No. 1. By 2013 the WT butterflies will have blown away & then, anything is possible.
