7 Things Worth Knowing From The Quiksilver Pro Today

Words by Craig Jarvis | Photos by Simon Muirhead

In another bold move by the ASP, they sent the girls out in the best surf of the week. Usually relegated to days when the surf is too small, too windy or the tide too high, on this memorable day they scooped the best surf on offer so far, and made the most of it.

1. O Brother, where art thou (scores)? In a less bold move, there was a strange approach to the judging of the Kolohe/Durbidge heat. We’re not really into bagging on judges as it’s a shit of a job and all the dudes get is complaints and endless online vitriol. But at the beginning of the heat, Kolohe pulled off a great combo with a linked air reverse, and was awarded the same score as Bede who executed five similar-looking and somewhat average turns. The questions of how to award innovative and progressive turns, and the value of a combination of major manoeuvres must be asked. Getting an answer ain’t as easy as asking, but we’ve still gotta. Kolohe went on to win with his final wave scoring a 7.13 and putting the judging doubts out of the window.

On that note, Shane Beschen, who coaches Carissa Moore, approached Commissioner Perrow shortly before 7am. “I love Trav Logie but if you want the sport to progress, you can’t score cutdowns an 8.87,” said Shane.
“It looked pretty good to me,” replied Kieren.
“It looked like Damien Hardman,” said Shane.
“Im pretty sure it was quite a bit better than that,” defended Kieren.
“It wasn’t,” continued Shane. “I had to surf against Damien Hardman. He’d surf rings in this new format.”

malia

2. Hello, Malia Manuel. This time last year Malia had been clearly marked a surfer to watch, and a surfer who was going to be a serious contender in the immediate future. Also very blessed in the looks department, with her Hawaiian tones and her athletic femininity. She’s not just about looking good though, being the youngest ever athlete to win the US Open Of Surfing, and with a couple of six-star ASP victories under her belt. She beat fellow Hawaiian ripper Coco Ho in a tight heat, with a solid 7.5 putting her into the next round.

3. Girls On Film. There was a bit of cloud and there were a few drops of rain, but still the pretty girls kept on coming down. There was an endless parade on the water’s edge, most of them quite aesthetically pleasing. During those quiet times, when both surfers have ridden waves to the Mali area and are making their way back out, it was like shooting fish in a barrel getting photographs like this, apparently.

didge

4. Russell Corowa. The local didgeridoo dude, Russell, is an indigenous gent who spends his time having a blast on his instrument, blessing the surfers who enter the water near him, and generally carrying on like a bit of a legend. People say that back then he really wasn’t that crazy… nope, that’s actually the bastardised lyrics from a song by The Eels. Russ adds great flavour to the paddle out experience.

bianca

5. Bianca Buitendag. Oft muttered words on the street are that Bianca Buitendag is a world title contender, and loudly spoken word on the street is that she has a scintillating backhand attack. True to the spoken word she smashed her round two heat against Laura Enever, despite a fairly close finish to the heat. “She needed a four,” said Bianca. “When it gets that close you really have to concentrate on your tactical aspect of surfing.” She went on to smash all takers, and is through to the quarterfinals. Growing up on a punchy righthand pointbreak, the current conditions at Snapper are right up her sleeve and we can probably expect her to make fools of other higher-rated surfers.

freestone

6. Boyfriends. In the slightly bigger surf this morning, it was a free-for-all, with everyone ripping the bag out of every single wave that hit the sand bank. Jack Freestone was down to support his girl, Alana, who was due to hit the water during the course of the day. As it turned out, Alana and Lakey Peterson had an amazing opening heat of the round, with two very hot girls surfing hot. Sadly Alana lost to Lakey, but she had Jack around to comfort her.

Carissa_BEst_Main

ASP/Kirstin

7. The best wave ever surfed by a girl. In the round three heat between Carissa, Malia and Pauline, Carissa surfed what was quite possibly the best wave ever surfed by a girl. Four huge open-face hooks and carves, tight, in the pocket, with excellent style and spray reaching the commentator’s building. She fell off after her fourth radical turn, as she was setting up for a possible fifth turn, and was still awarded a 9.90. Oh boy, the solitary wave that shifted a perspective. Was it the best wave ever surfed by a girl? Go onto the Roxy Pro heat analyser right here to have a look, and decide for yourself.

  • RCL

Pretty annoyed I have to make an account to watch heats…another password to remember.

    • Charlie Conway

I’m guessing its just one step closer to being charged a subscription fee by the ASP.

      • 23-16

        Its most likely coming….sigh.

    • bitter guy

and believe me, that email address is marketing gold. it will be sold. thanks for paying your subscription ASP fan:)

      • rushtozicatela

        No shit huh.

    • sjj

You don’t need an account to watch – I think it’s only required for heat analyzer.

      • RCL

Yeah that’s what I’m referring to. And cuz I’m in the States I usually watch on the heat analyzer.

      • Vinícius Maciel

There’s a “X” to close that sign up stuff in both pages.

  • John Dove

Competitive surfing started out giving 1 point per cutback. Fucking dumbasses haven’t come much further

    • bitter guy

funny you say that. Pottz was stoked out of his mind when Kolohe babied that last section on his winning wave. something like “the old Kolohe would have tried an air there, but the new, more mature, more robotic Kolohe knows to just do a foam climb he won’t fall on”

      • 23-16

        Hahahaa!

      • sjj

Pottz has been doing the ASP/judging a bit of a disservice with the way he’s been phrasing things… I think his intent is that surfers should concern themselves with advancing out of the heat in rounds 1-3 and outsurfing the other guy in the current conditions, not trying to force anything when it’s not needed.

        • sjj

Also, they could do a better job articulating the scoring – there is a justification as to why Kolohe’s air wouldn’t be scored too high, but that isn’t being provided. Parnell gets some slack because he hasn’t been doing it for that long, but the other guys should be able to articulate those things, along with the technical details that make a certain turn or maneuver better than a similar looking maneuver.

          • bitter guy

yeah, its pretty awkward listening to them try to defend judging when they just commented on the exact same wave that the judges apparently saw very differently. its like “awww shucks, I’m just a stupid ex-pro, the 5 ‘wise men’ in the box are the real experts.”

      • Rohan4

I heard that as well. I thought ‘well there goes any incentive for progression and free surf maneuvers in competition.’ That was a very telling comment.

      • Sam

Pottz was so hypocritical, praising Bede for trying a fly away air which he wasn’t even close to making, saying he’s “reinventing himself” yet when Kolohe clicks a air combo, it just doesn’t match Bede’s hacks. That makes NO SENSE and Kolohe actually has a damn good rail game too. So at least the right surfer won that heat, but feck, it wasn’t that close.

  • Me

The judging is disgustingly bad and the commentary may be even worse. It’s like they don’t want to see airs at all. It’s fucked.

  • shooootsbrah

that was a cool move for the asp to throw the women out there in proly the best conditions the event has had so far. i feel pretty bad for the girls to get tossed into some super slop when its too shitty even for the men to grovel in. although easier for sponsors, and proly more exposure to have womens events coincide with mens, i think its better when the women have their own events. they get better selection of waves and can really show that they surf better than most aggro dudes i see frequently the ocean.

also, alessa quizon is sexy as hell, and surfs pretty damn good. i feel like im gonna be watching the women’s tour a lot more this year because of her

    • rushtozicatela

Fuck yeah that chick is fine as fuck! I was tripping when I saw her….hottie for sure. Dustin’s sister?

  • old yogurt

    i really enjoy watching the chicks surf today they were r i p p i n g

  • Johnny Maya

Epic surfing from Carissa. I agree that it was the best surfing ever done by a girl during a contest.
Courtney Conlogue was also ripping. It was really weird to see that two of my favorite surfers’s surfing (Steph Gilmore and Sally Fittz’s) has become somewhat boring and powerless, when compared to Carissa’s and Courtney’s.
On another note, I could see some of these girls advancing through some heats in the Men’s event. Carissa’s wave would probably still score close to excellent!!!

  • Burckauser

    Beschen is right.

  • Rattone

Beschen is spot on and has Pottz lost his fucking mind? Watch the replay of the Bede/ Kolohe heat and you hear Potter talking Bede up so much about how he “re-invents his surfing” and “changes it up for the judges” all after he did the same fucking turn 5 times on one wave!?!? I was so dumbfounded at what I was hearing, it was like he was justifying the shit judging before the scores even dropped?

    • 23-16

      THANK YOU!

    • HeyZeus

Anyone else having issues accessing the Kolohe Bede heat? it appears to me like it isn’t there

      • Sam

Will not load for me either…. every other heat before and after works. Such bs.

      • Guest

Just go to the end of the heat before it and let it play through. The judging and commentary really are fucked. Stoked to see Kolohe make a heat though

    • James B

Really??? Not the first time!! But when i talk about that, you guys just don´t believe, uhn???

  • god

malia manuel, you’re a fucking goddess

  • Michael S

Kolohe’s two best waves were underscored… The 6.33 air reverse combo was an easy 8! Difficulty level high, variety, power, flow innovation, commitment…it was al there. The 7 was another 8.

    • bitter guy

not with the score they gave Bede’s first wave they weren’t. doesn’t really matter what it would have got him in any other heat. and I’m not sure that air reverse nose-pick is really that difficult, Jadson gets 3 points per on those

      • Lebron James

Do you actually believe what you just said??? don’t be stupid “air reverse nose-picks” ARE INSANELY more difficult. Why do you see face carves, snaps, and cutbacks being performed at every surf spot all over the world. DUURRR I don’t know maybe because they are easy enough for any intermediate surfer to perform.

To the guys in the comments who complain that to many air reverses are performed in contests. List ONE contest where there were more airs performed than cutbacks(other than an airshow).

        • Trogan Fan

you see 11 year olds doing reverses, but they can’t do big cutties.

          • Manbearpig

they can do cutties they just weigh 30kg’s, so it looks a little awk bc theres no power behind it…watch those sakes kids when there adults

          • bitter guy

and you think those reverses aren’t awk? i think you’re proving his point, kids can do all sorts of moves and they’re all gay without power

        • bitter guy

did you see how hard Kolohe got clowned after that Rincon edit a couple weeks ago? they had to take it down

          • 23-16

Siding with Central Cal b.g here….LeBron James?????wtf?! Blacks can’t swim.

          • rushtozicatela

            23=W
            16=P
            hmmmm?

        • Michael S

Air reverse nose-picks not that difficult?!! Lebron James although I see you fly all the time in the basketball court you clearly never tried to do an air reverse on a surfboard.

    • NEGATRON

Grabbing the rail whilst in rotation is a safety move, The judges could tell he wasn’t putting it all on the line. Fair score for a good move, We all know JJF, JW and even Slats take that sort of move to the 8-10 range “look ma, no hands”

      • 23-16

Somewhere Virs or one of the Fletchers screamed “safety grab” at Kolohe.

        • NEGATRON

True that! The Fletchers got slapped at the dinner table for doing airs like that.
Kolohe’s air game is like Snips cutback to reo combos from the 80’s. very unexciting.

          • bitter guy

            Jim Hogan’s were radder

        • Michael S

Yeah he grabbed but he let it go just before landing. It was not safety grab 100%…

          • 23-16

At least he made it functional….and it was a lot more risky than Bede’s turns.

  • 23-16

Shane knows a bit about this spot as well. He’s spot on….dropped three 10s on a BRAZZO in that 96 bong pro….and his comparing trav to dooma!..poor dooma.

    • rushtozicatela

That comp was incredible. Donavon Frankenfags 10 was mental as well.

      • Encunted

It was kinda average, actually. You’re thinking of the 94 contest, which WAS epic

        • rushtozicatela

You’re right, 94 was better than 96 and VERY epic.

          • Encunted

Yeah, I still have a copy of the video based around that contest (called Cyclone Fever, if I recall correctly) lying around somewhere

    • Encunted

Those tens were scored at Kirra, not Snapper

      • 23-16

Thanks Encunted but I knew that. And Im talking about 96….not 94. You are right about it being “average” as far as Kirra WAS, but still a pretty memorable comp.

        http://www.surfertoday.com/surfing/8944-the-triple-perfect-10-heat-by-shane-beschen

        • Encunted

Not suggesting you are: the 94 comment was directed at Rush

          • 23-16

OK mate, sorry for the misunderstanding. But can a local of Kirra/QLD answer my question about her “possible return”.

          • bitter guy

not QLD but i seem to remember a “bring back Kirra” bumper sticker campaign that fizzled. think the “Superbank” has consumed what would have been several distinct sections. think they talked about lengthening or shortening the groyne

          • Encunted

The groyne was being lengthened, then the council downed tools at about the same time yet another proposal for a luxury cruise ship terminal/marina proposal at North Kirra surfaced. The scale of that thing was truly hideous (scope it here: http://www.frothsurfmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/kirra_leda_map_001.jpg), and has thankfully been kiboshed by the state government, who also put an end to the Wavebreak Island proposal that would have put an end to South Straddie. I suspect others will emerge. Tony Tate, the GC mayor, is a card-carrying member of the white shoe brigade and is truly disdainful of surfers. The groyne will be lengthened, though.

          • bitter guy

Jason Buttonshaw barrels from Surf Into Summer would be nice to see again

          • rushtozicatela

Seriously. And wtf happened to old freckle faced Shane Herring?

      • 23-16

Since you obviously surf there, honestly, do you believe that Kirra will EVER(our lifetime) be what it was? I admit last years semis and final looked like the Kirra of old, but where were they actually sitting?

        • Encunted

Good question. I doubt it, unless they scale back the dredging of the Tweed River and the depositing of sand at Froggies. It will be interesting to see what difference the return of the 30 metres of big groyne has on it

          • 23-16

FACTS are better than OPINIONS people…..Encunted, thank you.

          • wonkah

            shh

          • 23-16

curiosity killed the cat, I know……

  • bitter guy

In his first real test as commissioner, Kieren was given the unenviable task of explaining to someone who knows what good surfing looks like that somehow Logie is one of the 25 best competitive surfers in the world.

  • Local Boy

Don’t bad mouth the judging on the asp Facebook page either or you will get blocked. Is fucking Vladimir Putin running this tour now?

    • Encunted

Putin would just fucking delete you, never mind Facebook

    • Encunted

Yep, probably confused it with the cafe of the same name in Coolanghetto

  • Encunted

Pottz’ take on 3 foot, 8 second interval Snapper: “These are waves of consequence.” Oh dear. He almost redeemed himself with the following repartee with Joey: “You know Joey, I’ve mind-surfed 100 heats today, and I haven’t lost once.” I guess you have to do something to keep the mind active when sharing the mic with Joe.

I also got a kick out of hearing him babble on about tidal coefficients like he had a fucking clue what a coefficient is.

    • 23-16

LOL! 8 seconds, real thick and of consequence…..cmon POTTZ

    • bitter guy

you’ll see more broken boards at a US Open in HB (don’t know how Aritz did it)

  • jb

What kind of stupid name is Lakey? And Quincy? Surely people giggle at Coco Ho when she introduces herself. Chicks are fucked. And Tyler Wright is built like a front rower. She’s gotta be a bloke.

    • rushtozicatela

Lakey’s Mom is Sue, Father, David….Sue’s a former champ swimmer, he’s a current douche…..go figure.

    • 23-16

      Hahaaa!!

  • http://loeswick.com cali_intellect

When Slater retires…which may be when he’s 60 at the rate of anti aging he’s going, make him the head of judging criteria for the ASP, dude has been doing it probably longer than any other human associated with ASP. I’m with everyone else though, and i like seeing the new shit (airs, varials, full rotations, linked with hard carves, and epic barrels) Not 5 of the same safety turns to beach. The ASP is figuring their shit out, and awarding heats to Travis Logie is all apart of that journey. He’s a veteran and let’s be honest the guy usually loses second round anyways, so props to him, Jordy has many years left in him to conquer the tour.

    • rudiger

Any tour/system that has Aritz Aranburu, Travis Logie and that kook of kook Tiago Pires as members, let alone heat winners is clearly fucked. Better figure that shit out faster ASP!

      • Midnight Tickler

Your a fucking idiot. All three of those guys would smoke you… Deuche……………………

        • rudiger

What an angry little fiddler you are. How would they smoke me? Through a bong? Vaporiser perhaps? Compared to the Average Joe they rip – no shit. But best most progressive surfers in the world? No fucking way. Their boring ‘3 to the beach’ style is everything the ASP should be moving away from, not rewarding by re-introducing a regressive judging criteria.

  • El Gringo

Fuck Shane Besh he is a kook and needs to look at his own style before he judges others.

    • 23-16

S.B. a kook! BLASPHEMY! Say that at T-Street, better yet Lowers. You would be stomped out properly. Welcome NEW kook of the forum. Recall that contest at Huntington when Slater was leery of Shane and in many peoples opinion, flat out intimidated as S.B. was on a tear? Yeah I love Slater but that little paddle behind Shane in the FINAL made for an interference and a win(not by surfing)…..scandalous move…..HOWEVER Kelly kept getting better and Shane was peaking in that time period. Look at video of you and that’s what you will see asshole, a KOOK.

    • rudiger

Don’t know which Shane Beschen you’ve been watching, but this one seems to be ripping!? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iuBNp-XlPU.

      • rushtozicatela

Definitely STILL shredding…..at an `advanced` age. Fuck I have had so much fun at 3foot Vland….nice clip. Gringo you don’t know what you’re looking at.

        • Backpaddle Master

Fuck Vland, too crowded….”small” Mokuleia way more fun, and way less crowded.

  • Big Jim

i may be wrong ,but contest directors phillips and perrow are looking like more stoned phillips and dumb perrow more everyday!

  • Big Jim

sorry but i dont think Jay phillips can add up never alone read a weather map,but fuck he can pull a bong!
